    5 DESCRIPTION OF MODES

5-1. Mixed 1-Sided Document Size Detection (Normal-Speed) Mode

When in this mode, the AF-3 detects the size of the document each time adocument is taken up and fed in.

This means that, even if documents of different sizes are placed on the

Document Feed Tray, the copier feeds the copy paper of a size selectedaccording to the document size detected and the copying mode set on thecopier control panel.

5-2. Fixed 1-Sided Document Size Detection (High-Speed) Mode

When in this mode, the AF-3 detects the size of the first document only. The copier selects the copy paper size corresponding to this document sizeand uses copy paper of this size only. This provides for faster paper feedon the part of the copier.

Note: If a set of documents of mixed sizes are loaded in this mode, imageproblems including lost image could result.

5-3. Lightweight Original Mode (Metric Area)

This mode is intended for users who use lightweight originals. When in thismode, the Original Width Scale is operated and controlled differently, and adifferent document transport method is employed to protect the originalsfrom damage.

Note: In this mode, the document stops at a point 3 mm before the normal

stop position, which could cause the problem of lost image along theleading edge depending on the original. In the inch areas, the original is stopped at a point 01 mm from theend face of the Original Glass whether the AF-3 is in the normal orLightweight Original Mode.

Note: For the following description, direction of rotation is as viewed from therear of the unit.

    The MOT turns clockwise.

Driven by the MOT, Timing Belt B1 turns Pulley P1 clockwise.Since Transport Drive Clutch CLU is disengaged and Gear G4 is idling, theTransport Belt remains stationary.

The Pulley Gear PG2 turns Gear G1 counterclockwise.

The one-way bearing in theDocument Take-Up Roller islocked, allowing the Roller to turncounterclockwise to feed thedocument.

Note: The Document Separator Pad is pressed against the DocumentTake-Up roll to block the document(s) sticking to the desired document.

One-way bearing in Pulley P3 isunlocked and no driving force isapplied to Gears G2 and G3,keeping the Registration Rollerstationary.

8 CONTROL OF MAIN MOTOR MOT

IC4 controls the Main Motor MOT. The signal from pins 12 and 13 of IC4determines the direction of motor rotation: reverse (during documentfeeding); forward (during document transporting or ejecting). When both

signals are High, the motor stops.

    Reverse L H

    Stop H H

The speed of MOT is monitored by the pulse sensor CLK SNS whichcounts the pulses from the pulse disc mounted on the output shaft of themotor.

The sensor outpout signal is fed to pin 73 of IC4 which increases ordecreases the width of pulse output to pin 47.

As the width of pulse at pin 47 increases, the motor decreases in speed;as the pulse width decreases, the motor increases in speed.

    9 MISCELLANEOUS

    9-1. Document Size Detection

The document size is detected by a combination of Width Detection andLength Detection.

    * Width Detection The Size Sensor SIZE SNS detects the width of the document. The SIZE SNS is located at a point approx. 265 mm from the Rear

Document Guide Plate. An On signal from the SIZE SNS indicates that the width of the document

    is 265 mm or more.

    * Length Detection

A pulse disc attached to the output shaft of MOT is detected by PulseSensor CLK SNS.

The length of the document is detected by counting the number of pulsesoutput by CLK SNS from the time the motor starts to the time when theRegistration Sensor detects the trailing edge of the document.

The actual length is determined by subtracting a correction value A fromthe pulse count B.

    9-2. AF-3 Raised/Lowered Position Detecting Mechanism

The AF-3 raised/lowered position detecting mechanism employs a magnetthat is installed on the AF-3.

The magnet actuates a reed switch when the AF-3 is lowered; anddeactuates the reed switch when the AF-3 is raised.

If a document is placed on the Document Feed Tray while the reed switchremains deactuated, the Closure Failure Indicator on the copier controlpanel lights up and the copier inhibits the initiation of a new copy cycle.

Raising and lowering the AF-3 serves to reset a misfeed condtion andallows for selecting a Test Mode operation.

9-3. Document Exit Tray Raised/Lowered Position Detecting Mechanism

The Document Exit Tray can be swung up to allow documents of a largesize (A3 or B4) to be loaded on the Document Feed Tray.

The magnet fitted on the Document Exit Tray actuates and deactuates theExit Tray Switch to let the copier know whether the Document Exit Tray isin the raised or lowered position.

If the Document Exit Tray is not in the lowered position after documentshave been loaded, the Closure Failure Indicator on the copier controlpanel lights up and the copier inhibits the initiation of a new copy cycle.

    TROUBLESHOOTING

    General Precautions

    1. When servicing the AF-3 with its covers removed, use utmost care to prevent

your hands, clothing, and tools from being caught in revolving parts.

    2. Before attempting to replace parts and unplugging connectors, make sure that

no power is being supplied from the copier.

    3. When creating a closed circuit and measuring a voltage across connector pins

specified in the text, be sure to use the green wire (GND).

    4. Keep all disassembled parts in good order and keep tools under control so that

none will be lost or damaged.

    Reading the Troubleshooting Charts

    1. If a component on a PWB or any other functional unit including a motor is

defective, the text only instructs you to replace the whole PWB or functional

unit and does not give troubleshooting procedure applicable within the

    defective unit.

    2. All troubleshooting procedures contained herein assume that there are no

breaks in the harnesses and all connectors are plugged into the right positions.
