Message from Executive Director

Mrs. Cheung-Ang Siew Mei, JP (Mrs Cheung)Warm greetings to all of you at this beautiful Festive Season and thank you so much for taking the time to read our 14th SHINE Newsletter.

The SHINE Centre project now successfully running in its third year, has two main objectives: firstly, to help the EM to integrate into society by social orientation, language, support groups and employment programmes and secondly, to enhance the understanding and acceptance of local Chinese towards EM groups, with regard to their cultures and difficulties encountered in Hong Kong. To this end, the Centre continues to promote racial harmony which is a long-term process, taking into account the mindset of every person in society.

We can proudly say that so far more than 3,000 people have been involved in our cultural enhancement programmes, cultural sensitivity talks, mutual understanding groups, cultural ambassador programmes and volunteer programmes. The participants include teachers and students from schools and universities, frontline staff of NGOs and the business sector, government departments like Education Bureau, Social Welfare Department, and Civil Service Bureau; members of Hong Kong Council of Social Service and volunteer groups like Rotary and Lions Clubs and church members.

In context to the wider community, everyone can contribute to build up racial harmony, through mutual communication and a better understanding and awareness of each others' cultures and lives in Hong Kong.

With the continued support of dedicated Shine Members, I firmly believe that the future of SHINE is bright, providing opportunities for all races for employment and full integration into Hong Kong society.

Welcome message from new staff

Harmony occurs…when you PARTICIPATE!

What is cultural competence? Are you a culturally competent person?

Cultural Competence = Awareness + Attitude + Skills

Cultural Self-Awareness

+Attitude to Learn &

Appreciate others' culture

+Building Interaction/ Multi-

Let's do a simple test… 1. I attend training sessions which enhance my cultural competence.

2. To communicate with people who not speak my language, I attempt to learn their basic

greetings.

3. I explore my own values and beliefs and see how they impact on how I deal with people of other ethnicities.

4. I intervene when I find others engaging in behaviors that show cultural insensitivity or prejudice.

5. I understand and identify how cultural difference may influence people to perceive things and respond.

1. The agency has trained all frontline staff in the use of interpretation service.

2. The agency sends staff to cultural competence training at regular basis.

3. The agency has available printed information in languages other than Cantonese.

4. The agency liaises and develops links with ethnic community in the target area.

understand the negative impact of their language.

More "YES" means you/your agency has developed higher level of cultural competence and vice versa.

Chinese Traditional Wedding

In the old days, a Chinese marriage was arranged by the parents. One family would send a matchmaker to the other family with a marriage proposal. There were a lot of customs and etiquette needed to be followed in a traditional wedding. The groom needed to send betrothal gifts to the bride's family. Then both families would send wedding cakes to relatives and friends to announce the good news. After that, the groom would send presents to the bride's family. Usually all items were in pairs, bringing good fortune for the couple.

The night before the wedding day, a "sheung tau" ceremony was held in the bride's and groom's home respectively. One with good fortune, e.g. having a living spouse and lot of children, would comb the hair for the bride or groom. This custom is a hope for good relationship for the couples and wishing them many children.

Nowadays, some customs or rituals are simplified yet retaining its meaning. Most newlyweds plan their own wedding. It can be a western one but also with some Chinese traditional elements inside. Usually wedding banquets are now held in restaurants or hotel rather than the groom's home in the past.

On the wedding day, the groom firstly need to overcome the "Sister's Block". The bride's female friends would prevent the groom easily coming in the bride's home. Now in Hong Kong, the ladies will also prepare some challenging games for the groom before he can finally reach the bride.

Until now, most of the Chinese wedding will still consist of the tea ceremony. The couple offer tea to the elders of the both families. The elders show the acceptance of their marriage by drinking the tea and also offer the couples some wedding gifts.

In the evening, guests from the newlywed's families are invited to share the joy. They will bring along red pockets or wedding gifts to express their blessings to the couples.

婚宴中,Nikah(回教的婚約儀式)將由一位回教的教長主持簽署婚約。
