A Reading Routine is…. “A reading routine in its most basic form is when a parent reads to his/her child in the evening before bed. This practice is highly effective in strengthening the little one's reading abilities and is the most widely used reading routine.” From the Link of Readinghouse

“A reading routine is a set of rehearsed schedule and activities for students to practice reading comprehension, fluency and accuracy.” From the Link of Revamp Your Reading Routines. See examples listed as below.

● Teach self-monitoring by having students record themselves reading a text and listen for characteristics of a good read-aloud

● Have children read with a stuffed animal as the students will find it both enjoyable and highly motivating to read with a furry friend if they see it like a reading buddy

● Practice reading stamina with reading pajama party，● Have reading picnic ● Invest time to build students’ reading comprehension first as practice fluency and accuracy become

meaningless if students don’t understand the text they read

in Chinese classrooms can be of two forms:● Visible routine is a part of your daily classroom schedule : it is time devoted to activities such

as read aloud, shared reading, reader workshop, literacy circle, reader theater, literacy stations such as word work, read to self, read to partner, guided reading etc.

● Invisible routine can be worked into any part of the day. It is a physical learning space setup to highlight specific skills or thinking flow. For example, Radical House, Reading Word Wall, Reading Strategies wall, ‘Reading Responding wall’,“Questions Wall” or any Anchor charts which support developing reading ability etc. During any particular lesson of any subject, teachers can utilize the physical learning space to scaffold or support student learning the subject at hand.

Interactive Read Aloud is...● Read-aloud is an activity in which the teacher reads a book aloud to the whole

group ● Purpose of the read-aloud is to model appropriate reading behaviours and reading

strategies ● A time to expose children to a variety of genres and literary styles. The teacher

has an opportunity to show students the joys of reading and teach them how to think and discuss text.

● Teachers should have a set purpose for each read-aloud and should read with the proper fluency, rhythm, and intonation.(Focus Strategy/Standard)

● The read aloud can be used in conjunction with the mini-lesson.● It provides students with the opportunity to see the teacher model the lesson

Why Read Aloud Is So Important?“When we read aloud, we can mentor children in the thinking processes that are common among proficient readers. “ (P59, Lucy Calkins 2001）

“The read-aloud gives us opportunities to work with youngsters as apprentices, demonstrating the tools of thoughtful, skilled readers and inviting children to try these out. “ (P59, Lucy Calkins 2001）

“After evaluating ten thousand research studies, the U.S. Department of Education's Commission on Reading issued a report Becoming a nation of Readers(1985), which goes so far as to state that “ The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.” (Anderson, Hiebert, Scott and Wilkinson, 1985, p.23.）The study found “conclusive evidence” supporting reading aloud in the home and in the classroom, and it claimed that adults need to read aloud to children not just when children can’t yet read on their own, but throughout all the grades. “ (P51, Lucy Calkins 2001）
