Skellig Boat Ferry P E S P S E • No interpretation or induction from the Boatmen, the journey was inspiring and highly anticipated

• Pre-trip induction (some boats do) • Maps of the island and brochures on

board • Examine options for providing for

interpretation and ensuring safe boarding for interpretation (including geology)

Skellig Michael Island Experience

P E S P S E • Guides an unexpected surprise, as many other locations globally don’t have such informative guides for free

• Brochure is very complex /wordy • Themes – Good vs Evil, Heaven on Earth,

Pilgrimage, Tough life in the Atlantic, Edge of the World, remarkable achievements

• Wow experience of both islands

• Guides’ storytelling to be better aligned with the themes

• Give the customer a sense they are contributing to the conservation of the site

Skellig Experience Visitor Centre

P S E P S • The centre is dated and the interpretation lacks the impact of the Skellig experiences

• Currently this would be a poor alternative to an experience of the Skellig itself

Bray Head S P E S P E • A Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Point • Story will be interpreted on Discovery Point panel

Geokaun Mountain S P E S P • Interpretation of local stories and 360 degree views of the region

• Connect more of its story to the Skellig Rocks and the Blasket Islands

Tetrapod Tracks S P E P • Very specific interpretation to the tracks, little context of why they would be here

• Links the visitor to a mysterious world approximately 380 millions years ago

Slate Quarry P S P • No interpretation of the slate and why or how or where it goes

• Link the story to the geology of the region

P – Primary S – Secondary E - Emerging

Prior to the development of the Skellig Coast Visitor Experience Development Plan, a product and experience audit was undertaken to determine how the current Skellig Coast offering appeals to the target markets and aligns to the themes of the Wild Atlantic Way (WAW). This information was then used to help distil the essence of the ‘Skellig Coast Story’ and to determine the hero products and experiences that fall beneath it.

Ballycarbery Castle P P S • Interpretation confusing, needs context • Dangerous rocks, need to close some

sections

• Potential for enhanced interpretation of the Medieval dynasties and the families who lived there and their importance to the region, and the castle’s demise during the Cromwellian Wars

Ring Forts P S P • Limited interpretation of the story of the owners and occupants

• Interpretation needed inside the forts of the people, protection and daily life

Cnoc na dTobar P S S P • Poorly signed entrance and trail • Carpark potentially available but not signed

• Part of the pilgrims trail – permissive access and insurance issues undergoing review

Kells Bay Gardens P S P • Story of micro-climate • Link to Robinson Crusoe

• Limited connection to Skelligs • A key piece in delivering the ocean

meets sky experience Old Barracks P P • Need to link forts and monastic sites to the

Old Barracks • Story of Daniel O’Connell and his fight for

the Irish Catholic way of life (good vs evil) • 1916 uprising story and images

• Interpretation needed on the broader region’s connections and pathways to increase appeal (e.g. by adding the story of Mons. Hugh O’Flaherty) linked to the Cradle of Ireland’s Nationhood

Ballaghasheen Pass (Ballagh Óisín)

P S P • Lookout positioned to look straight into the powerlines

• Move the lookout to the farm land in front, or up on the hill behind (where the signage is)

• Investigate opportunities for adding an interpretation board that introduces the legend of Tír na nÓg before they descend into either of the valleys

Irish Language • Irish language is prominent • More interactive activities in Irish or directions to how visitors can experience it spoken

P – Primary S – Secondary E - Emerging

• Influential people make things happen for the region (The Knight of Kerry, Daniel O’Connell)

• Organise the information under themes • Get volunteers and staff to ask people

what they are interested in

Derrynane House & National Historic Park

P S S P P • The current brochure and promotion via guidebooks etc. positions this very much as a ‘museum’ style experience, (which it is) when it delivers more of a guided tour of Daniel O’Connell’s life and family

• Emphasise more the house as an experience of Daniel O’Connell’s life where he drew his courage and inspiration paying due respect to the family’s story

Kerry Cliffs S P S P S • Offers spectacular views of Puffin Island, the Skelligs, and the cliffs

• Potential to bring the Monks’ Story to life through Skellig Michael and Baile an Sceilg/Ballinskelligs

• Potential to enhance stories relating to geology and the wildlife

P – Primary S – Secondary E - Emerging

Cill Rialaig Arts Centre

P P P • Limited information available on the depth of hands-on experiences available

• Embrace Original Kerry idea and become an arts attraction that helps tell the story of why the local art looks the way it does – provides opportunity to tell the story of Cill Rialaig

Skelligs Chocolate S P S P • Product is not linked to the Skellig Coast landscape other than through the logo and name (i.e. stands alone) but an interesting attraction

• Could include interpretation of the local landscape

Ballinskelligs Abbey P S S S S P • The link to Skellig Michael is not as clear or as compelling as it needs to be

• Identify a safe viewing area and include as part of the Monks Trail. Create a stronger link with Skellig Michael at other points on the journey (e.g. Skelligs Chocolate, Coomanaspic, Kerry Cliffs , Bray Head and Geokaun Mountain)

Coomanaspic & Coomakista Mountain Passes

S P S S P S • Both passes provide a unique opportunity to link experiences and stories which will be improved once the panels are installed

• Installation of the panels will deliver a great experience link

Tech Amergin Arts & Education Centre

P S S P S P • Interesting range of exhibitions, arts and cultural events

• Includes a permanent exhibition on the Waterville Cable Station

• Potential to play an enhanced role in the cable story as this theme is further elevated.

that promotes tourism attractions • Opportunity to become a short story

telling experience of landmarks such as Beginish Island

Continuing on, Cahersiveen, the gateway town to the Skellig Ring, lies at the foot of Beentee Mountain, the shores of Valentia Harbour and “Over the Water” from beaches and the stunning sheer cliffs of the Atlantic. Most people on the Iveragh call it home, and it has been the capital of the peninsula for centuries drawing its name from one of its many ring forts and the ruin of Ballycarbery Castle. Cahersiveen is a modern town with fine dining, quality accommodation, great cafés and traditional pubs. Right on Ballinskelligs Bay, it’s no wonder the first monks chose this as their base to build a monastery on the Skelligs mainland. The landscape is dotted with important chapters in the early history of Christianity. “Visitors come for the beauty, and leave with the spirit of Ballinskelligs.” The sweeping views of the Skellig Rocks and Puffin Island from An Gleann/The Glen (St. Finan’s Bay) are majestic from the moment you drive through the pass of Canuíg Mountain (the Coom) to the imposing climb bringing you to the outstanding Coomanaspic Pass. Díreach ar Bhá na Scealg, ní haon ionadh gur roghnaigh na céad manaigh an áit seo mar bhonn chun mhainistir a thógáil ar mhórthír an Sceilig. Tá an tírdhreach poncaithe le caibidlí tábhachtacha i luathstair Chríostaíocht. “Tagann cuairteoirí le haghaidh áilleachta, agus fagann siad le spiorad Bhaile ‘n Sceilig. Tá na radharcanna den Sceilig agus Oileán Puifín ón Gleann/Bá Fhíonáin thar barr ón móimint a thiománann tú tríd slí Shliabh Canuig (an Coom) chuig an mala ag tabhairt aghaidh ar Cúm an Easpaig.

A4 – Recommendations: Environmental Considerations Moltaí: Ceisteanna Timpeallachta Implementation Implementation of this Plan shall be consistent with and conform with the provisions of all adopted/approved Statutory Policies, Strategies, Plans and Programmes that have direct influence on this Plan (e.g. the County Kerry Development Plan). This includes for provisions for the protection and management of the environment.

The progression of projects by Fáilte Ireland’s partners is required to be subject to planning, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and AA (Appropriate Assessment) processes as appropriate.

Strategic Environmental Assessment This Plan has been examined for the need to undertake Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). SEA requirements apply to the plans and programmes of public authorities that, inter alia, set the framework for future development consent of projects listed in Annexes I and II to European Directive 85/337/EEC. The Skellig Coast Plan does not create such a framework, therefore requirements in relation to SEA do not apply.

Appropriate Assessment The Plan has been examined for the need to undertake Appropriate Assessment (AA) and it has been determined Stage 2 AA is not required. An AA Screening Report has been prepared that accompanies the Plan.

Projects Referred to by this Plan There are various projects relating to land use and infrastructural development referred to within this Plan, including those relating to development of land or on land and the carrying out of land use activities. While many of these projects have been completed some have not yet been progressed.

The Statutory Policies, Strategies, Plans and Programmes that provide for different projects undergo a variety of environmental assessments. These assessments ensure that environmental effects are considered, including: those arising from new and intensified uses and activities; and those arising from various sectors such as tourism.

Any projects referred to in this Plan that have not yet been progressed are provided for by Statutory Policies, Strategies, Plans and Programmes that have been adopted/approved and subjected to appropriate levels of SEA and/or AA, as relevant. Although reference to such projects is made in this Plan no re-interpretation of the projects has been undertaken and no detail on these projects additional to that included in the other Plans/Strategies is included.

Skellig Coast| Visitor Experience Development Plan – Technical Appendix 30

“People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but they will never forget how you made them feel”

“Déanfaidh daoine dearmad ar cad a dúirt tú, déanfaidh siad dearmad ar cad a rinne tú, ach ní dhéanfaidh siad dearmad riamh ar chonas a mhothaigh siad de bharr tusa.”

- Maya Angelou
