    Portree, Trotternish and Isle of Raasay Portree is the largest town on Skye and is

    set around a picturesque natural harbour,designed by Thomas Telford, and flanked bycliffs.

    The Trotternish peninsula sits in the northof Skye and has an extraordinary set of rockformations, known as the Trotternish Ridge,which includes the pinnacles of the Old Man ofStorr and the Quiraing.

    You can take the ferry from Skye to the Isle ofRaasay, a charming island which boasts goldenand white-tailed eagles.

    The Cuillin and north west Skye The Cuillin mountains dominate the skyline

    throughout Skye as they are narrow-crestedand moody. This range offers superb walkingand climbing and is often compared to otherranges such as the Alps and Rockies.

    This atmospheric area of high sea cliffs is hometo the town of Dunvegan in the north. A fewmiles further north is Dunvegan Castle, whichhas belonged to the MacLeod clan for over 800years.

    The picturesque hamlet of Carbost on thesouth shore of Loch Harport becomes a busytourist hub during the summer months.

    South Skye Broadford is set in a tranquil area of the island,

    and has a range of craft outlets.

    Torrin is a fishing village with great views ofBlaven and Loch Slapin.

    Kyleakin is home to the Bright Water VisitorCentre, where you can find out more about thefamous author, Gavin Maxwell.

    Armadale, on the southern end of the SleatPeninsula, is home to a great sheltered beachwhere you can spot otters and seals.

    Elgol also has a stunning beach which offersincredible views across Loch Scavaig to theCuillin mountains.

    The north side of the glen includes the FiveSisters of Kintail, while south of the glen is

    the South Glen Shiel ridge, commonly knownas the South Cluanie Ridge.

    A glimpse of what to see and do The Skye Serpentarium is a fantastic, award-

    winning centre, which is home to around 50reptiles and amphibians, and runs regularholding sessions.

    Visit Edinbane Pottery to see the craftsmenat work before choosing a unique piece fromthe range, which is inspired by the greatoutdoors. Marvel at the whole process frommaking and decorating to firing the items.

    You can watch the creation of hand-thrownceramics at Uig Pottery, based in the village inthe north of the island. For over 20 years, thispottery has specialised in ceramics which areinspired by the natural beauty of the island.

    Enjoy a culinary experience youll neverforget at the award-winning Three Chimneys

    restaurant. Dine in the 100-year-old crofterscottage and soak up the intimate atmosphereas you enjoy three courses of creative,modern and exciting food with a traditionaltwist.

    A boat trip is a great way to explore thewaters around the island of Skye andmainland of Lochalsh. Look out for wildlifefrom the boat - you might see minke whales,porpoises and common seals.

    Head out to Waternish Point, the mostnorthern part of the Waternish peninsula in

    the north of Skye. From here, you can see outover the Minch to the Outer Hebrides, andwatch for wildlife in the sea and sky.

    Highlights Ragamuffin is a quirky clothing store

    During the summer months, the Highlandgames get into full swing. The SkyeHighland Games on 6th August featureheavy field events, athletics, piping andHighland dancing.

    Take a guided walking or adventureholiday around the Isle of Skye withWilderness Scotland.

    Its quite a challenge to climb to the topof Beinn Sgritheall, but the views areextremely rewarding. Gaze out over thedramatic Loch Hourn to Knoydart and theCuillin mountains.

    Dont miss Take a short walk along the paths and

    minor roads of the Staffin slipway circuitto explore the coast and crafting village ofStaffin.

    Pick up some gifts at the Isle of SkyeSoap Company in Portree, which produceshandmade soap, bath bombs andaromatherapy oils. Choose from soapsincluding lemongrass, ginger and evenwhisky.

    Go fishing in some of the remote lochs onthe hills of Aird of Sleat. These waters arefull of brown and sea trout.

    If you fancy a challenge and are an

    experienced climber, tackle the Black Cuillinmountain range, home to perhaps the mostdistinctive Munro in Scotland. You willfind a 20 km long ridge of jagged peakswhich curve around the great hollow ofLoch Coruisk, with towers of bare rock, andplunging cliffs. If you dont have as muchexperience, hire a guide and benefit fromtheir knowledge on walks around the hills.

    This area is famed the world over for itsmountain challenges. Why not take a guidedhill walk up the Five Sisters of Kintail or tothe pinnacle of the Cuillin ridge? Climbers,

    walkers and scramblers can embark onterrain offering every possible degree ofdifficulty. While you wont find a moredramatic or inspiring location, remembersudden changes in the weather can takeplace, so make sure you go prepared.

    Join one of the many Highland Council rangerwalks and admire the outstanding scenery,landmarks and wildlife of Skye & Lochalsh.Take in some of the best sights such as LochCoruisk, Calums Road on Raasay and theGlenelg Brochs.

    Did you know the iconic Old Man of Storr,north of Portree, is highly enjoyable forclimbing and easily accessible? It takesaround an hour from the Storr car park andthe views over the Sound of Raasay are trulysublime.

    Take to the sea on one of the many boat

    trips on offer and watch out for wildlife suchas golden and white-tailed sea eagles andminke whales. Enjoy spotting porpoises andcommon seals while keeping a look out forbasking sharks and dolphins. With over 10operators in Skye & Lochalsh, its easy toexplore the truly fascinating seascape.

    Small dingy sailing, sea kayaking andwindsurfing in the surrounding waters aregreat family activities and provide you withthe freedom to explore by yourself.

    One of the best ways to explore the ruggedoutdoors of Skye is on horseback. Thereare two riding centres in the north of the

    Marvel at some of the UKs finest mountainscenery from the long ridges of KintailsMunros (South Glenshiel Ridge, Forcan Ridge,the Saddle and the Five Sisters of Kintail) to

    the jagged and dramatic edges of the Blackand Red Cuillin mountains in central Skye. TheCuillin mountains are counted among the mostspectacular peaks in the UK and you can hirea guide to help you tackle these challenginghills.

    Admire the power of Mother Nature who hascarved her mark into many locations, includingthe volcanic landscapes of Trotternish Ridge- 20 miles of extraordinary rock formationsmarked at each end by the rock pinnacles ofthe Storr and the Quiraing. Tour around fromPortree to Uig, via Duntulm and Staffin, andyou will be rewarded with the magnificentunfolding views of the entire Trotternish Ridge.

    Take a wildlife boat trip from Elgol to LochScavaig and look out for the local marine lifelike porpoises, dolphins, seals and seabirds.

    During the trip, enjoy incredible views of Rumand the Rum Cuillin, and once moored take awalk around the spectacular Loch Coruisk inthe heart of the Black Cuillin for some of the

    wildest scenery anywhere in Scotland.

    Hop on a boat trip and look out for residentseals colonies. You can also catch a glimpseof herons nesting, as well as Arctic terns andwhite-tailed sea eagles.

    Neist Point is the most westerly point onSkye, with excellent views over Moonen Bayto Waterstein Head and out over the Minchto the Outer Hebrides. A great location forbirdwatching, the area is also the best placeto spot porpoises, dolphins and minke whalesfrom the shore while basking sharks are

    often seen from late April until the end of thesummer.

    The Bright Water Visitor Centre, located nearthe Skye Bridge, is an interactive wildlife centrewith a live webcam to Kylerhea Otter Hide. The

    hide overlooks the dramatic Glenelg narrows,where you can spot otters, grey and commonseals, and a variety of seabirds.

    Why not spend some time walking along someof Skyes beautiful beaches? From the coralbeach of Claigan near Dunvegan to Talisker

    Bay, the beaches here are quiet and perfect fora relaxing walk.

    Discover the enchanting fairypools, a uniqueseries of aqua-blue pools in the west of theisland set against a mountain backdrop.

    Skye & Lochalsh boasts a colourful past based on Celtic culture and myths.

    Historic attractions arent hard to find in these rural villages and communities.

    Come face to face with Scottish heritage as you explore museums, castles andbrochs.

    The regions turbulent history has left someof the most beautiful and romantic castlesin the world, each telling fascinating tales ofJacobite risings and clan feuds.

    Follow in the footsteps of Bonnie PrinceCharlie who escaped to Skye by boat afterhis armys defeat at the Battle of Culloden.He was rowed across the Minch by FloraMacDonald to Rudha Phrionnsa, now known

    as Princes Point, and his journey took himthroughout the island.

    At Kilmuir Graveyard, near Uig, you can seea memorial to the Jacobite heroine, FloraMacDonald, who helped Bonnie PrinceCharlie escape from Scotland.

    Visit Dunvegan Castle, a mighty strongholdbuilt on a rock. The massive exterior is madeup of six separate buildings surrounded withdefensive battlements running the wholelength of the roof line. Enter the castle to seethe grand rooms, which are full of priceless

    heirlooms and items thought to havebelonged to Flora MacDonald.

    See the iconic castle of Eilean Donan, whichhas featured in several movies, and sits on anislet in Loch Duich, near the A87 road. Pass

    through the ornate gates to explore the castleand climb the stone steps to the main roomsof the castle. Admire the Banqueting Hallwith its flags, shields and trophies and thekitchen all laid out for a meal.

    Take a trip to Clan Donald Skye, a 20,000acre Highland estate which is full of charmingwalks with views out across the Sound ofSleat to Knoydart and out west to the Cuillin

    mountains.

    Catch a glimpse of what life was like acentury ago at the Kyle Line Museum.This railway line has been in use for over100 years and the museum now containsa collection of photographs and railwaymemorabilia. Pick up some railway gifts totake home from the shop, as well as art,whisky and much more.

    Imagine what life on Skye was like 100 yearsago with a visit to the Skye Museum of IslandLife. Explore seven thatched cottages, full

    of household items, tools and photographswhich explain how the islanders used tolive. See farm tools, a busy workshop withthree types of spinning wheels, a hank-cross,carders and dyepots.

    The Clan Donald Trust ishelping to preserve thegreat music traditions ofthe Highlands by holding

    the Donald MacDonaldQuaich Piobaireachd pipingcompetition each year on thegrounds of Armadale Castle.

    Active During the summer months, the Highland

    games get in full swing with the LochcarronHighland Games on 19 July and the SkyeHighland Games on 6 August.

    The Skye Half Marathon runs on 14 Juneoffering an undulating course with a steadyclimb before dropping into Portree for thefinish.

    The Plockton Regatta from 28 July - 9 Augustis a highlight in the sailing calendar. Thisfortnight of events features boat races for

    juniors, centre board dinghies and PlocktonLocal Boats. It concludes with a concert,ceilidh and dancing on the street.

    Take part in the Lochalsh Dirty 30 Challengeon 14th June and enjoy some spectacularviews around the region on one of either the30 or 12 mile circular walks. Beware, thewalks must be finished by midnight!!

    The Dunvegan Castle Summer Festival willsee Scottish sculptor David Mach create anddisplay new pieces within the magnificentformal gardens of the castle.

    Between June and September, weatherpermitting, the Isle of Skye Pipe Bandentertains in Portree Square every Tuesdayevening.

    The Aros Centre in Portree has a varied artsprogramme with classic and current cinemascreenings, concerts, theatre, dance andother events.

    By road Roads are of a generally good standard

    although be aware that there may be theoccasional sheep wandering out onto theroad.

    Travel around Lochalsh along the A87 whichconnects to smaller routes and the A890 forventuring further north.

    Head to Kyle of Lochalsh and cross theSkye Bridge into Kyleakin to follow the A87

    towards Broadford. From this road youcan turn off to reach the Sleat Peninsula,head west onto the road to Elgol, or northto the Waternish, Minginish and Glendalepeninsulas and the villages of Dunvegan andUig.

    Other roads also run off the A87 making iteasy for you to visit the regions towns andvillages.

    Take care on the single track roads and usethe passing places to allow oncoming trafficand traffic behind you to pass or overtake

    safely.

    By bus A network of local buses is provided by

    Stagecoach and a number of smallercompanies operate services between many ofthe main towns and villages. You can reach anumber of visitor attractions this way.
