GIVING FROM THE HEART Much of our giving is from our surplus. This is true not only of what we give financially, but also of our service. We are very busy people and generally when we offer our time, it is of direct benefit to us or someone we love. We may volunteer to help with a field trip at school, coach a soccer team, or help in a nursing home; but generally it is we or our family members who benefit from our generosity. We may find, however, that as it did for the widow of the first reading, our generosity may be greeted with more generosity. The prayer of St. Francis reminds us of this when we pray, “It is in giving that we receive.”

THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28).

TODAY’S READINGSFirst Reading — The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16).Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146).Second Reading — Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28).Gospel — This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]).

READINGS FOR THE WEEKMonday: Ti 1:1-9; Ps 24:1b-4ab, 5-6; Lk 17:1-6Tuesday: Ti 2:1-8, 11-14; Ps 37:3-4, 18, 23, 27, 29; Lk 17:7-10Wednesday: Ti 3:1-7; Ps 23:1b-6; Lk 17:11-19Thursday: Phlm 7-20; Ps 146:7-10; Lk 17:20-25Friday: 2 Jn 4-9; Ps 119:1-2, 10-11, 17-18; Lk 17:26-37Saturday: 3 Jn 5-8; Ps 112:1-6; Lk 18:1-8Sunday: Dn 12:1-3; Ps 16:5, 8-11; Heb 10:11-14, 18; Mk 13:24-32 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCESSunday: Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time; Veterans Day; Remembrance Day (Canada)Monday: St. JosaphatTuesday: St. Frances Xavier CabriniThursday: St. Albert the GreatFriday: St. Margaret of Scotland; St. GertrudeSaturday: St. Elizabeth of Hungary

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL CATHOLIC CHURCHLLAMADOS A SER DISCÍPULOS

INTIMACYI think most people are called to marriage because

we need at least one other person to be like a mirror for us, to reflect our best self—and our worst self—in a way that we can receive. The interesting thing about a mirror is that it doesn’t change the image; it simply takes it in as it is. Our closest friends or life partner hold a mirror up to us, revealing our good side and our dark side and reminding us that we still haven’t really learned to love. That’s what every healthy relationship does. When we fall in love, we fall into an infinite mystery. That’s why Jesus gave what was symbolically an infinite number, “seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22), as the number of times even good people will need to forgive each other.

Thankfully, the Gospel does give us a blessed assurance that we are operating inside of an abundant, limitless, infinite Love. So even though we will constantly fail, failure is not the final word. We also have hope that everything can be mended, healed, and restored. Where the welding takes place is normally the strongest place of all on a steel bar. It’s the breaking and the welding and the mending that creates the real beauty of relationship. This is the dance of intimacy: as we ask one another for forgiveness, as we confess to one another that once again we didn’t do it right. Don’t be surprised and don’t hate yourself for it (which we all do). Darn it, I didn’t love right again! How can I miss the point so many times?

It’s when we do it wrong that we are taught vulnerability. We finally realize we are falling ever-deeper into something we can never live up to—a sustained vulnerability, a continual risk. It’s not a vulnerability and an intimacy that we need just now and then. Eventually, it becomes second nature to apologize, to admit we are wrong, to ask for forgiveness but not to hate ourselves for it.

The dynamics for divine intimacy and human intimacy are the same. I believe one is a school for the other. Most start with human intimacy and move from there to divine intimacy. But some begin with the divine ambush, first learning how to be vulnerable before God, and then passing it on to others.

The only people who change, who are transformed, are people who feel safe, who feel their dignity, and who feel loved. When you feel loved, when you feel safe, and when you know your dignity, you just keep growing! That’s what we do for one another as loving people—offer safe relationships in which we can change. This kind of love is far from sentimental; it has real power. In general, we need a judicious combination of safety and necessary conflict to keep moving forward in life.

THANKSGIVING ADULT SOCIAL

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 166:30 PM IN STMICHAEL HALL

Bring your favorite dishand share with your fellow

parishioners

THANK YOUI want to thank all the parishioners of St. Michael’s who participated in the 2018 McKinney Hike for Life as a hiker, sponsor, volunteer or an individual who donated needed baby items. Now that the online donation period has passed, I would like to report to you that the Hike raised $12,042.25 and

contributed much needed baby items to White Rose and Birth Choice. Again, thank you for your generosity and I look forward to your participation in the 2019 Hike for Life. If you have any questions or comments, you can reach me at [email protected]. George Fuchs, Hike for Life Coordinator.

George Fuchs, Coordinador de Hike for Life

WARM & SAFEWe would like to express our gratitude to those who greet us warmly, help us find our way, and while we worship keep us safe and ensure our gifts are well handled. Our ushers and those in our greeting ministry welcome us as we arrive at our spiritual home; they watch over

us during Mass taking care of whatever arises, direct us and any visitors and newcomers to the right places. In their usual understated way, our ushers and collection counting teams have implemented new procedures recently to ensure

that the financial gifts we bring are kept safe and reach their intended purpose. Just as surely as any of these ministers welcomes you as you arise, please thank them for the gift that they are.- Clergy & Staff

"Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of Heaven belongs to such as these."Matthew 19:14

We are being called from the highest levels of our Catholic faith to bring our children to Eucharistic Adoration. Two former popes, Pope Benedict and St. Pope John Paul II, along with Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, are asking us to bring our children to the Lord.

What an awesome gift we can give to our youth, to spend time before the very Presence of Jesus!

Don’t miss this amazing opportunity and come to spend time with our best friend

JESUS IN THE BLESSED SARAMENT!!!

Our children live in a busy, hectic world. We are running from school to activity to yet another activity. Adoration provides our youth a chance to slow down and quiet themselves before Jesus: a chance to nurture and grow their relationship with our Lord, a chance to deepen their prayer life, a chance to listen to Jesus.

As in the above quote from St. Pope John Paul II, “Like the young Samuel, by learning the words of the prayer of the heart, they will be closer to the Lord, who will accompany them in their spiritual and human growth,” this time in Eucharistic Adoration builds a strong faith foundation.

In Eucharistic Adoration, our kids will develop a deep and personal relationship with Jesus who will guide them through their entire lives. This time with Jesus in Adoration flows forth into their daily lives and teaches them to turn to Jesus often. How wonderful to develop this relationship early in life which will hold them close to Jesus in their childhood, youth, college, and adult years.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONVeterans Day began with the signing of a symbolic treaty

between the Allies and Germany ending World War I (then called the “Great War”) on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The auspicious date was actually a well-established religious holiday, the feast of Saint Martin of Tours, a beloved soldier saint of the army of Rome. After World War II, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Britain, but of course the feast of Saint Martin endures.

Martin was named after Mars, the god of war, and against the advice of his parents he went on his own to church. He became a catechumen at the age of ten. By fifteen he was enlisted in the cavalry in France. Coming across a poor man, Martin had an impulse to divide his bright red soldier’s cape and clothe him. He later had the insight that he had served Christ, and the other half of his cape became a lifelong sign to him of his duty to serve the poor. Housed in a tiny church capella or “chapel,” the cape became a great object of pilgrimage on the way to Compostella, and a favored place for the prayers of soldiers. Martin was not so eager to serve as bishop as he had been as a soldier, and legend says that he hid in a barn filled with geese to avoid episcopal election. To this day, the customary meal for November 11 is goose! Traditionally, this is the last feast day before winter closes in, and begins a period of fasting once known as “Saint Martin’s Lent” or “Martinmas,” that later developed into the season of Advent.
