Stefan Andersson25 Cups

When writing this I am in Jingdezhen, China – the porcelain city. For a month I have been working within this very special setting filled to the brim with tradition, skill and knowledge. There are a few places like this around the world but this one has a special bond with my work. Since graduating my intent has been an un-romanticising study of the potters’ means. In the work clay characteristics and the craft are ever present but not the driving force. The focus is instead shape within the boundaries of functional ware. At times I feel that I am upholding a tradition but in the end it is only the means to make better pots. The pots are made on the potter’s wheel and are the fruit of an attentive search among clays, glazes and firings.

As a child my main contact with ceramics was not with the typical earthenware of Sweden but rather with the classical Chinese glazes and the medieval Japanese wood kilns through my uncle’s pottery. These experiences have influenced my work greatly and are still the practical and intuitive bases for it. Moreover the Chinese influence literally filled and fills every kitchen cupboard in Sweden. For instance every cup and plate has a small foot, something that is quite uncommon in the earthenware tradition. I have come to understand that it would be hard to imagine Scandinavian modernistic design without these ancient influences. As I work I follow the choices of the Swedish designers and experience an almost tangible bond with the original Chinese makers.
