Introduction

Durham Public Schools offers an exciting portfolio of summer learning opportunities. This

handbook serves as a reference guide that contains registration and contact information for each

of the district-sponsored summer programs. School leaders should review this handbook and

share with their support staff and counselors in order to answer parent questions and provide

copies of letters and applications.

Summer programs that serve specific students based on programmatic or NCDPI guidelines (i.e.

Take Two and ESY) are not open to the public and therefore the applications for the programs

are not included. If you have additional questions regarding a particular program, contact the

summer program manager directly at the number or email address listed in the DPS Summer

Programs for Elementary Schools chart. To reach a district contact by phone, please dial 919-

560-2000, and enter the listed extension.

Operation Literacy: Mission Possible!: In preparation for the Read to Achieve Gateway and

accelerated academic success, Operation Literacy: Mission Possible specifically targets

kindergarten readiness, as well as reading needs and deficits, for rising kindergarten and first

grade students. This intensive four week gateway experience serves students who currently

attend the following elementary schools: CC Spaulding, Eastway, Merrick-Moore, and WG

Pearson. Operation Literacy will be offered June 26 - July 20, 2017, Monday - Thursday, 9:00

a.m. - 3:45 pm at Eastway Elementary School. Transportation and meals are provided.

Project RAISE 21st Century Summer Camp: Project RAISE provides enrichment activities

and hands-on math and science sessions during the summer for children of all backgrounds and

physical and intellectual abilities. Students work in small group activities with teachers and

youth development workers. In addition to receiving academic support through math and

science, students participate in physical activities, interact with local visitors to increase

awareness of the STEM field, and participate in field trips and other explorations as planned for

the summer. The program’s overall goal is to improve student proficiency in all subjects by the

end of camp through the implementation of unique hands-on learning experiences.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Newcomer Academy*: The three week ESL Newcomer

Academy will target rising 3rd

- 5th

grade ELs who are within the first two years in US schools.

The academies will run Monday through Friday with the focus on project-based learning, with

the goal of enriched learning of English, math and technology instruction that supports the

attainment of real-life experiences. Students will grow in both social and academic English.

Extended School Year* (ESY): The Extended School Year (ESY) services, provided by the

Exceptional Children’s Department, offers educational services to qualifying students with

disabilities who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Eligibility for ESY services is

determined by IEP teams only. (There is no application process.) IEP teams evaluate data on

student progress related to retention and recoupment of skills and critical emerging skills.

Students who qualify receive individualized services, which focus instruction on specific IEP

goals for each student. The parent of each qualifying student will receive a letter outlining their

child’s individualized ESY service delivery dates, times and location.

SPARK Camp for AIG Students: Summer Program Accelerating Radical Kids (SPARK) is a

camp for gifted students in Durham Public Schools, grades 4 – 8. During the four days, students

choose two sessions of interest as well as participate in enrichment sessions each day.

Registration will begin on February 16, 2017 on the DPS AIG website

http://durham.schoolwires.net//site/Default.aspx?PageID=167 . At the end of SPARK camp, AIG

students will be able to demonstrate a new skill or knowledge through various formats as a result

of enrichment classes aligned with Common Core/Essential Standards.

offer traditional full day camps for rising 1st – 6

th graders at Bethesda, Creekside and Hillandale.

literacy instruction for first through third grade students who do not meet the standard grade

level reading proficiency as indicated on the North Carolina 3rd

grade End of Grade (EOG)

Spring, 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian of: ______________________________________________

Durham Public Schools (DPS) is committed to providing all students with an excellent

education. Your child will participate in the regular administration of the North Carolina End-of-

Course (EOC) or End-of-Grade (EOG) test in late May or early June. Students who score Level

3 or higher on the End-of-Course assessments are considered proficient.

While we will continue to provide your child with the daily instruction needed to reach

proficiency on the EOC and EOG assessments, we want to make you aware of another

opportunity for your child to demonstrate proficiency at the end of the school year. If your

student scores less than a Level 3 on the assessments mentioned above, the student should attend

the 2017 DPS Take Two Summer Program to re-take the math and science EOG or EOC. The

Take Two Summer Program will be held June 14 – 27, 2017 and transportation and meals will be

provided. Additional information and a final registration form will be shared with you in May, if

needed.
