Thieves today left police at Londons Heathrow Airport red-faced by stealing 3.2
million dollars in cash that had just arrived by plane, and, amazingly, this is the second time
such a robbery has taken place in the last five weeks.
The money arrived at Heathrow on board Flight SA234 from Johannesburg, but
while airport staff were transferring the money to a security van, two men armed with knives
hijacked the van and forced the driver to drive out of Heathrow to nearby Cranford. While
the helpless driver watched, the money was transferred to another vehicle before the robbers
disappeared, perhaps forever. Fortunately, the driver of the van was not hurt. However, the
incident has led to renewed calls for an investigation into security at

31Heathrow, Last month, thieves stole a staggering six million dollars that had arrived
from Bahrain and was en route to New Yorks JFK Airport. In that raid, the robbers tied up
the security guard and drove the van out of the airport long before anyone realized what was
happening. When the police finally found the van, the robbers had abandoned and burnt it.One eyewitness said that when she heard the van explode, she thought that a neighbors car
had blown up.
While both of these robberies are big, they still have a long way to go to become the
biggest robbery of all time here because in 1983, robbers stole an incredible 26 million
pounds of gold bullion from a Heathrow warehouse in the now famous Brinks Mat heist. The
British police were successful in catching the gang responsible for that robbery, so lets hope
they can do the same this time.
This is Robin McGuinness, reporting live for XYZ News at Heathrow, London.

I started collecting baseball cards when I was seven years old, so thats twenty-five
years ago. At first I just had cards that you could buy at normal stores, but then I gotinterested in collecting special cards, ones that were limited editions or that werent on sale
any more. So now I spend most of my weekends going to special conventions where you can
buy and sell cards. The most valuable card I have cost me two thousand dollars five years

I began painting a couple of years ago. My husband and I wanted to try somethingnew, so we decided to go to night classes together. My husband studied photography and I
studiedpainting, but he gave up after six months. I, well, I was hooked. I never thought Id
be good at it, but really, Im not that bad. I enjoy painting landscapes the most, and thats the
part I am really good at. I like packing the paints and canvas into the car and standing in the
fresh air for hours. Its great. I dont think its a very expensive hobby, because you can do it
wherever you want to. All you need to buy is the materials.

I first tried snowboarding on a trip with my friends. We went skiing for a week, but
one of the guys had a snowboard, so after a couple of days I thought Id like to have a try,
and he said I could. The first few times I kept falling over, but as I started getting better, I
knew snowboarding was the sport for me. Now I work all summer to save money for going
on trips in the winter. Next year Im thinking of going to France to snowboard in the Alps.
Ted
I can still remember reading my first book. I was about ten then, and the book wasLord of the Rings. I continued reading science-fiction and fantasy novels until I was fifteen or
sixteen years old. Now I like to read non-fiction, especially history, though I also reallyenjoy
detective novels. Who knows? One day I might even write one.

621. Do any students wonder why the company Cirque du Soleil(which means Circus
of the Sun) has a French name? Canada has two official languages: English and
French. Many Canadians are bilingual, and in Quebec, French is spoken more than
English. Infact, in 1995 Quebec citizens voted whether they wanted to separate fromCanadaand become an independent country. Ninety-two percent of Quebecs voters
participated: 50.6% voted no. and 49.4% voted yes. There were a total of 4.67
million votes, and those opposed to becoming an independent country won by only
50,000 votes.

which was founded one month after the birth of network television in 1946. TheGrammyAwards are presented to musicians by the National Academy of Recording
Arts and Sciences, founded in 1957.
Perhaps the most famous are the Academy Awards, granted by the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The first Academy Awards Presentation was held
in 1929: 250 people attended at a cost of $10 a ticket. These days thousands of
people attend the ceremony, which is broadcast worldwide. The Academy Awards
are commonly called Oscars. No one is sure of this nicknames origins, although
one popular story claims that an Academy employee once said that the statuette
looked like her Uncle Oscar. Whatever its origins, the nickname has been used since
the early 1930s, and the Academy officially accepted the name Oscars in 1939.
3. The English word circus comes from the Latin word circus, which came from theGreek word kirkos, meaning circle orring. In Ancient Rome, the word circus
referred to events that took place in a ring that was enclosed by seats for spectators.
Unfortunately, these circuses often included bloody combats between gladiators. We
are lucky that today the word circus refers to an event that is fun for the whole
family.

LISTENING SCRIPT
Reporter : Hi, this is Dane Great reporting for Century Radio. Everyone knows that
choosinga career is a real minefield and that not everybody makes the right choices, but to
help ouryounger listeners, we have Dr. Emily Robins, a top psychologist, with us to give
some advicedr. Robins, what advice would you give people choosing their careers?
Dr. Robins : Of course, the first thing is to keep your feet on the ground and not be a
dreamer. I think everybody in the world wants to be a singer or an actor or an athlete, but
only very few people have the talent to become one. So, dont waste time and energy onchasing an impossible dream because youll only end up disappointed. However, just because
you dont have the talent to become an actor or an athlete, that doesnt mean that you dont
have talent. Think of what youre really good at; if youre not sure, talk to someone who
knows you well, like your parents or a teacher, and ask them what they think your talents are.
Then, when you know what your talents are, try to look for a job that involves using your
talent. I mean, not many people enjoy their job one hundred percent, but if it involves
something you are interested in and are good at, then youve got a good chance of enjoying at
least part of it. For instance, if youre very good at writing, why not think of journalism? If
you like helping people, how about a job like a doctor or nurse? Like speaking languages?
How about becoming a translator?

83Once youve decided what kind of job you want to do, look at what qualifications
are necessary. Then, look at colleges that offer those qualifications because if youre going to
spend three or four years of your life studying, you want to be sure that it will get you a job at
the end of it. Also, think of whether you can get work experience to help you, like doingvolunteer work at a hospital on weekends-both colleges and employers will look positively at
you if your rsum shows that you've already got some experience. Finally, remember three things. First of all, if you dont know, ask for advice -
everybody has chosen a career at some point in their lives, so theyll always be ready to help
you choose yours. Second, remember that you can always change your mind-a career doesnt
have to be a prison. I mean, I started out as a normal doctor, and now Im a psychologist. All
you need is some more training. And last but not least, remember that people will always be
willing to consider hiring you if they think youre intelligent, so work hard at school and get
good grades.

Bud : Hi folks! This is Bud Murphy, your reliable radio problem solver. Got a
problem? Give us a call and well come up with some sound advice to
help you put those troubles behind. Hello, caller! Whats your name?
Tom : Im Tom.
Bud : And what can we do for you, Tom?
Tom : I think Im in love, Bud. And I think my girlfriend loves me, too. Were
both going off to college soon, and Id like us to get married. My mom
just goes on and on about how Im only eighteen years old and I dont
have a degree yet, but I really love this girl, and I want to make sure we
can stay together.
Bud : Of course you know that Im not your mom, but she might have a point. If
you both really love each other, then things will work out so you can get
married later on when youre both ready to live on your own and support
yourselves. And whats the rush to get married? I ask myself that every

Maybe you could write a thoughtful letter and leave it on her desk. Next
caller!
Mary : Hi, my name is Mary. Im having problems with my boss. Just as Im
about to leave the office, he always comes by my desk and drops a bunch
of work on me. Im a hard worker, but I also have a family to take care of.
I feel like hes taking advantage of me by giving me all this extra work.
Bud : If I were you, Id go into his office and calmly tell him that youre a hard
worker, but then remind him that you have obligations as a wife and a
mom, too. Askhim to try to give you the work earlier in the day, and tell
him that sometimesyoure going to have to leave work unfinished on your
desk. If he gets upset, remember that you can always look for another job.
Or even better, tell himyoull work late if he goes and makes dinner for
