Course Objectives: The PRACTICAL LAW ENFORCEMENT SPANISH class at JMU is offered to allow

students to collaborate with local agencies and the Latino community focusing on public safety and lawenforcement. Although increasing language skills is one objective, the ability to apply the language in

professional settings will allow students to solidify their theoretical knowledge, gain confidence, and see the

direct impact of their learning. Students will commit to two hours per week to their off campus assignment andmeet once a week in the classroom setting.

Grading:15% Participation/Homework

60% Placements (a minimum of 20 hours must be completed)

15% Group presentation10% Journal

Placements: In addition to attending class,you are expected to fulfill your placement assignment 100%.Placements have been selected to give each student a unique experience working with the local Law

enforcement/public safety community and/or organizations that support it. All contacts will report to the

instructor on student participation. It is your responsibility to initiate and maintain communication with theagency you select. The first meeting with your contact person counts as service hours.IT IS THERESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO MEET WITH THE DESIGNATED CONTACT TO ESTABLISH

AND FULFILL ALL WORK HOURS. Your placement requirement is a total of 24 hours over the course of the

semester.

NOTE: keep texting and extraneous mobile device usage to a minimum while completing your service

assignments (unless directly related to assignment). The professionals youll be working with in the fieldexpect your full attention and cooperation.

* Service assignments (ride-alongs) must be scheduled no later than 72 hours before the actual ride-along

takes place. The supervising officer needs this time to properly plan and schedule the patrol officers.

*Background screening discussion will be had prior to your placement. You are required to disclose anypast or pending legal matters or adjudications with both the professor and police department

representative during this time.

Group Presentation: You will present on a current event topic that will help us understand more of the

background and activity that surrounds local Latino immigrants and public safety/law enforcement.

Presentations must be in Spanish and a bibliography will be handed in the day of the presentation.Requirements can be found on Blackboard and youMUST present on the day assigned unless you have

documented proof of an excused absence.

Journal: Each student will maintain a journal on Blackboard through the On Line Journal feature. Weekly

entries should be made reflecting on the experiences for the week. The entries should be in SPANISH with 75 -100 words. This will not be graded for grammar. It should be your personal thoughts, feelings, etc. about your

experience in your placement. If you have no service hours for the week for some reason, you may write about

something related to class. The weekly entries should be submitted no later than Sunday by midnight

beginning the 3rd week of classes. You should have no less than 12 journal entries.

Participation/Homework: Attendance is mandatory. We will use our weekly meetings to learn more aboutlocal Spanish speakers and their interactions with public safety officials as well as analysis and support of your

experiences thus far. Your instructor and your classmates depend on you to be present every day to take part in

class activities designed for the participation of all students. Films/documentaries will be viewed outside ofclass and questions assigned for homework should be completed and brought to class for discussion. Failure to

complete homework will negatively impact your grade in this category.

Attendance: Regular, punctual class attendance is expected. The only exception will be for JMU sponsored

events or illness; in each of these cases, written notes from JMU sponsors or health care providers will berequired for the absence to be acceptable. It will be the student's responsibility to make up any work missed due

to an acceptable absence. An unacceptable absence will result in a 10 point reduction. Students are expected to

come to class with assignments completed and prepared to contribute to discussions, activities, etc.

Adding/Dropping Course: Students are responsible for registering for classes and for verifying their class

schedules on e-campus. The deadline for adding a fall semester class through e-campus without instructor andacademic unit head signatures is usually within the first two weeks after classes begin (May and summer terms
