Tännäs is one of the oldest villages in Här-jedalen. Its name is said to come of the Norseword ”Tenda” meaning glittering and might refer to the waters that surround the village.

Tännäs is first mentioned in historical sources in a letter from 1406 when a man named Mårten Mårtensson sold his homestead to his brother. This letter is preserved in the Swedish National Archives.

The village has always been associated with fishing and the many waters surrounding it. Fishing has always been very important for the local mountain farmers along with hunting. Tourists have been coming here for a long time to fish and enjoy the spectacular landscape that surrounds Tännäs.

Hunting has also attracted many tourists and during the 19th centu-ry the area was popular with German falconeers, something that has

given the mountain Falkhöjden (Mount Falcon) its name. Nowadays this mountain is popular for cross country skiing and for itstrip stop ”Falkboet”.

Skiing in the area surrounding Tännäs has developed greatly and the ski tracks are part of the Nordic Ski collaboration. Also the resort Tännäskröket offers great downhill skiing. The village is also home to Sweden’s highest situated church.

Welcome to Tännäs!

LOCAL FOOD MAY BE A BUZZ WORD but in Tännäs it’s serious business. Here, we grow potatoes on the mountain slopes, we pick cloudberries and lingonberries in the forrest and we hunt moose and reindeer. We even make lemonade from birch sap and we love our local grayling and brine. The Mountain Bakery offers delicious cookies and flatbread and in the village’s restaurants you can take part of our culinary tradition!

So much more than a restaurant! Aside from eating you can look at antiquities, shop local products or have a sauna.

Tännäsgården is located right in the middle of the village and offers an astonishing view. Many people stop by our cozy restaurant for a meal or a cup of coffee. We also have a very extensive waffle menu which is well worth trying. How about waffles with chocolate and blueberries or trying our dandelion syrup?

The restaurant has local products for sale, such as sheepskins slip-pers, mittens and local foodstuffs.

Our antiquity room is filled with antiquities and retro gadgets. You are almost sure to find something to get nostalgic over or something that you’ve never seen before.

If you would like to combine your visit with having a nice sauna that can also be arranged.

Welcome!Hanna & Henrik with family

FL ATBREAD, SOURDOUGH & CR ISPBREAD

Fjällmorans Skafferi Mountain Bakery offers a selection of local specialties such as hand made flatbread, sourdough bread, crispbread cook-ies and lemonade and jam made from forest berries.

Baking your own bread has been of great importance in Härjedalen through the ages. Earlier on every homestead had its own baking oven, but in 1991 a common bakery for the whole village was built.

I have been baking since I was little, when my mother and her mother taught the noble art of making flatbread in the wood-fired oven we had on our farm.

My dear grandmother was a very respected and liked flatbread baker, and this is something I want cherish and share with others.

Drop by and learn more about baking flatbread and sample some-thing from the bakery! If you want to try baking yourself with family or friends, that can be arranged too.

Fjällmorans skafferi is located in Tännäs bagarstuga opposed to Tännäs Fiskecentrum. I always bake flatbread on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11 to 15 p.m / Berit

PS If the ”open” sign is up, don’t hesitate to drop in!

MUSKOX CENTER

The enclosure has a tall ramp from which these fantastic animals can be observed. An enthusi-astic and knowledgeable guide informs about the muskox and how they live.

Guidning av myskoxarna i hägnet

The wild muskox in Härjedalen are all but extinct due to inbreeding and lack of habitats. Several measures have been taken to save the stock - with varying results. An enclosure has been built as a step in this conservation process. The facility will function for breeding and scientific purposes as well as doubling as a tourist attraction.

Hopefully it will be possible in the future to breed the few wild muskox with those from the enclosure to increase the genetic span of the stock and help it survive in the wild.

GU IDED TOUR SThe tour starts at Tännäs Fiskecentrum with a visit to the muskox exhibition. There the guide talks about the history of the muskox. After this you travel in your own car to the enclosure shows how and where the muskox lives. Following this you will go to the ramp to see the animals.

Please dress according to weather, boots or wellingtons are not required. Also, no pets are allowed in the enclosure.

Visit our website www.myskoxcentrum.se.

THE MUSKOX IN THE WILD

In the winter the muskox are found in barren areas above the tree-line. They like areas with little snow as it is easier for them to find food there. However, they eat very little in the winter because they survive on the reserves they build up during the rest of the year.

In the summertime the muskox leave the mountain tops and enter the woods, where they eat birch, willow and various herbs. Usually during this period the bulls are by themselves.

During the rut in august to september the bulls fight among themselves for the top position. This struggle for domination is a very powerful event to witness. The bulls start by showing off their horns and impressive physique. They rock their heads and scratch the ground angrily. After this, they back away from each other while still keeping eye contact. Then they suddenly ram into each other head first. When they crash there is a loud bang that can be heard kilometers away. This procedure is then repeated up to ten times until one of them gives up.

Myskoxar på vandring över de norska fjällen

The muskox in Härjedalen have a very habitual migration pattern. In the winter they are found on the mountain tops east of Tännäs, and in the summer cross the norwegian border and are found in the area west of Tänndalen and Fjällnäs. However, to go looking for them in the wild is ill-advised, as they need all the peace they can get, and they are also quite aggressive when disturbed.

THE ROGEN NATURE RESERVE

Hunting has been of great importance for the people of Tännäs throughout history.Nowadays a lot of small game hunters choose to spend the hunting season here.

Grouse and other forest birds thrive in this area. These mountains offer a great huntingexperience with magnificient views and are easily accessible. As a guest you can buy ahunting license for the areas around Tännäs to hunt grouse and other birds. Also there are companies that lease their private hunt-ing grounds and also offer guided hunting trips withdogs.

The Rogen Nature Reserve is wild, beautiful and almost 125 000 acres big. It has a veryextensive system of lakes and streams and lots of possibilities for outdoor activities like alltypes of fishing, canoeing and hiking.

This is Sweden’s southernmost wilderness. In 1975 it was established as a natural

reserve to protect its unique qualities. The area is characterized by large boulders and ridges.

The highest mountain here is Brattriet at 1 257 meters. The bedrock in the area consists of sandstone with purple and grey elements due to the gneiss content. It is a quite austere enviroment that only resistant plant can endure, except for some areas where the flora is more varied.

Characteristic to the wildlife here is that the muskox sometimes is found here in the

winter. Other animals in the area are bears, wolverines and otters. There is also a large chance to spot buzzards and golden eagles here. There are fantastic possibilities for fishing since the waters are full of char, trout and whitefish.

THE SA MI V IL L AGEThe Samis are an indigenous people in northern Sweden, Norway, Finland andnorthwestern Russia. The area they have traditionally populated is called Sápmi and inSweden it stretches as far south as the county of Dalarna..

Even though all Samis in Sweden know Swedish, they also have their own language called Sami. This is a Finno-Ugric language which is divided into the three variants north Sami, Luleå Sami and south Sami. There are also dialects within these three variants.Traditionally the Samis have raised reindeer for a living but today only about ten percent support themselves by doing this.

The Sami are strongly associated with their traditional outfit called ”Kolt”. There are different varietes of this but they all incorporate the colors green, blue, yellow and red, just as the Sami flag.

The Samis in Sweden are divided into villages. Each Sami village

controls a certain area and is an economic cooperation of reindeer raising Samis.

Tännäs is located close to ”Ruvhten Sijte” (the Ruvhten Sami village). Most of the Samis in Ruvhten live in Brändåsen south of Tännäs. The Rogen Nature Reserve is part of Ruvhten Sijte. In Tännäs there are some Sami products for sale, like reindeer pelts and meat. Ruvhten borders to Idre Sami village to the south and to Mittådalen Sami village to the north. Every year in march the Lopmne Naesti - Sami Festival - is celebrated in Funäsdalen.
