Te Rau Puawai Headstart Hui 2010

Nei te mihi nui ki a koutou katoa, ngā kaumātua, ngā kaimahi, ngā akonga, ngā ringawera me ngā kaitautoko mō ō koutou mahi, tautoko ki te hui tīmatanga. He wā whakawhanaungatanga, he wā whakaora hoki kia mahitahi tātou i tēnei haeranga mātauranga i te tau nei. Thank you to all who helped to make our 2010 Headstart Hui the success that it was. As always it was an important opportunity for Te Rau Puawai bursars to meet and build relationships with other students and staff involved with the programme. 2010 Headstart hakari was particularly spe-cial in that we were able to acknowledge Professor Sir Mason Durie and Lady Durie for their ac-knowledgement in the New Years Honours. Inspiration can be drawn not only from them but also each one of our students who are all working towards the same goal to enhance the Māori Mental Health Workforce.

Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou ngā tauira o Te Rau Puawai.

Firstly, thank you to Te Rau Puawai and Te Pūtahi a Toi whānau for the dinner to honour my knighthood and the tributes to Lady Durie and our whānau. In 2009 the kaupapa of the Headstart conference was looking at the past 10 years of Te Rau Puawai and its contribution to the Māori mental health workforce. This year we had the opportunity to focus on the fu-ture direction of the Māori mental health workforce and the need has been highlighted for early interven-tion by service providers. The message from the Head-start hui reinforces the importance of partnership be-tween health, education and tikanga Māori if the ca-pacity and capability of MMH workforce is to be en-hanced. This year University regulations for enrolments have been tightened and continuation in tertiary studies will be subject to pass rates. It is very important that stu-dents do not struggle in isolation, but instead utilise the supports of the Te Rau Puawai programme. Finally, Te Rau Puawai has relocated to Social Science Tower 5th floor and there has been very positive feed-back from students. The offices are closer to key facili-ties on campus and access to the whānau room is avail-able 24 hours. Good luck in your studies for 2010, enjoy every mo-ment and the board looks forward to catching up with you in July.

Kia Ora Whānau It was awesome meeting new students and catching up with current bursars at the hui. I hope everyone found the seminar presentations on Friday beneficial and that they provided a better understanding and possible fu-ture direction for Māori mental health. Thank you to everybody for making this hui enjoyable and for helping each other, the kaumatua, ngā ringaw-era, Board, manuhiri and staff, we really appreciated your support. In particular it was an opportunity to ac-knowledge Tā Durie and Lady Durie for their continued support to this programme and Māori development. The semester has started and everyone will be busy settling into their studies. If whānau have specific aca-demic questions that TRP staff and mentors did not address at the time of the hui, please contact the of-fice, your lecturer and/or mentor and we will be happy help. University regulations for enrolments have changed and students will need to start enrolling into semester 2 or 3 papers now so that you do have the opportunity to be considered, otherwise you may miss out. For those students with conditional continued support (from TRP) for semester 2 or 3 please check the with-drawal date without a penalty (so you are not charged for the fees if you withdraw). If unsure how to do this, contact the TRP office or College of Humanities aca-demic office. We have settled into our new location in the Social Sci-ence Tower, Level 5. Although we have relocated, we are still part of Te Pūtahi a Toi, School of Māori Studies. Students will be able to have 24/7 access. Please check with Jo for an access card and the combination lock pin number (there may be a charge for the card). You can do it and together we can share the load. I look forward to catching up with you all during the se-mester. Happy studying Moni

Kaumatua kōrero

Mai a Papa Huatahi Kia ora nga favourite tamahine o Te Rau Puawai, Taiarahia, Monica koutou nga Kaihautu katoa o Te Rau Puawai. E hika ka mau te wehi! Wasn’t that a tino whakahirahira hakari mo Taa raua ko Lady Durie. I wareware i ahau mo te korero. This is a short addition to my korero at the said hakari. Te korero mo Taa Meihana and yours truly travelling back to Tiniroto in the rail car to the biggest blackberry farm in the Universe. In that rail car journey almost 50 or more years ago, Lady Durie was travelling in the same rail car. I remember it clearly, she was dressed in her Napier girls high school uniform on her way to Gis-borne. Even then she sat with all the dignity and so-phistication that a well groomed young lady should have. I thought I’d just mention that (as for the other two hauhau, hei aha, the hitchhikers, kei kona ra).

Tena koe Whaea Pani for your usual support to the kaupapa, your robust karanga, waiata, dynamic korero and your encouragement to all the students, pono ki te kaupapa, tena rawa koe Whaea. As for the dynamic, good looking senior morehu, it was great having you right through the hui and you’re look-ing good and I’m so pleased you didn’t perform your usual magnificent te ngarongaro dance. However, I did notice though as one of the judges you tried to sabo-tage the winning group of the Wearable Arts Awards. Kia ora Pa, only one point? Where were you coming from?

It’s amazing what losing 16 pounds of butter fat can do to one’s ego. Kia kaha to all that got caught up in the Weight Watchers fever.

The first day of Semester One was also the first day of our official residency in the Social Sciences Tower. Māori staff and other staff on the fifth floor joined us for morning tea which was a great opportunity to show off our new whare and meet our new neighbours.

We’ll miss our Te Pūtahi whānau

but definitely not those stairs!!

Kia Ora Koutou, As most of you should be aware by now I am the new support tutor for Te Rau Puawai. I am also responsible for most of the postgraduate queries during phone team night on Thursdays. Sarah’s Hours

Monday - Friday: 9.00am - 5.00pm

Thursday: 12.00pm-8.00pm

Greetings TRP whanau, realistic study tips for a realistic

academic life:

Limit your access to the Internet, if you post self-

pitying face-book statuses about how much you have

to do, you’ll feel so terrible nothing will get done any-

way.

Don’t skip over an easy class to study for the hard

ones; it might be tempting to think, “Hey, I’ll just ignore

[insert easy class here] because [insert hard class here]

is just too hard.” Don’t do it. What you need to do is

balance your work level with how hard a given class

is—which shouldn’t mean abandoning anything.

If you have a study-related problem, talk to your men-

tor/tutor/course coordinator about it. Most of us are

frightened at the prospect of truthfully explaining our

problems to our mentor/tutor /coordinator. But while

it may be hard to accept, mentors/tutors/ coordinator

are human beings with human emotions. Explain your-

self honestly, but watch the word choice. Don’t deceive

them.

moter as well as continuing to study towards my mas-ters in health psychology. My time spent at the Runanga was invaluable as it pro-vided me with the hands on experience of working out in the community that a lot of undergraduate health and psychology papers talk about! I am now about to undertake my thesis where I will be investigating the challenges both men and women have faced during their lives in forming a positive and/or secure Maori cultural identity when they do not look Maori e.g. fair skinned, blue eyed etc (like myself). I will also be looking at ‘what this means to them now’ and how they have reconciled the challenges they went through in forming their Maori identity. I look forward to speaking with some of you on the phones on Thursday nights and hope I can assist you with your studies and queries. Nā Sarah Postgraduate Psychology Whānau

Acknowledge that your inevita-

ble feelings of despair are just

symptoms of stress, the

phrases “don’t let it get to you”

and “stay strong” is often

thrown around in ways no one

ever appreciates. Of course,

stress is going to get to you,

and you might despair as if it’s the end of the world,

depending on how bad the situation is. So let it get to

you all you want; just realize that in a couple of weeks

your ingenuity will have solved the problems. Convince

yourself that everything will get better, eventually. It

always does. So stay strong!

Best wishes for the first semester “Priceless”

inspiring. It was also special to be able to acknowledge Sir Mason Durie at the board dinner on Friday night and to hear some stories from his past. Nga mihi mahana ki a koutou e te whanau whanui o Te Rau Puawai i runga i tenei tau hou. This year I have been lucky enough to dodge Thursday night T.R.P. phone-team calls. I suppose you’re won-dering how I did it and how you can do it too. Simple answer … join the phone team! Which brings me to why I get to throw in a verbal splurge in this months Nga Moemoea. I am a new member to the phone team and since I’ll be asking all about your situation, I thought (well actually T.R.P. Admin thought … ) I’d let you all know where I’m at. I am currently completing Post-grad studies towards the DClinPsych Programme (one of those funny acro-nyms we learnt at the Headstart hui). I am trying to work this around being a new (and good) husband and father (some of you met my wife Ani, and daughter Waitohu at the hui). Throw in some fishing, watching movies, a Trademe fix, and that’s pretty much how I roll. Now that you know how I roll, I look forward to hearing

how you roll. Don’t be shy, don’t be sly, and we’ll catch

up with you whānau on Thursdays. Ma te wa whānau.

Tihei Mauri Ora!

It’s never about one person

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini

A warrior never stands alone, but stands with many

Professor Mason Durie began the year with a double cele-bration, a knighthood in the New Year Honours and his 45th wedding anniversary. The Massey University academic was named a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Or-der of Merit for his services to Máori health, and in par-ticular, public health services. Sir Mason described the knighthood as an honour for his family, especially his wife Arohia. "These things are never about one person”. “It is

also recognition of all those people who have helped make a differ-ence, many of whom are no longer with us”.

Many people climb the ladder of success only to keep others from straddling similar heights. For Mason, his reason for climbing has never been to keep oth-ers down, but to pull them up. Elevating others and recognising their contributions is a gift to ourselves as well as to those we acknowledge. To value others’ efforts is more than regarding them as important. To value is to appreciate the finer qualities and to invest time, energy, effort, and sacrifice in its maintenance. We all need to get to the point where we selflessly give others the respect they deserve, and the trust they have earned. It’s only when we do so that we achieve the results we are seeking – and more. Kia pai tó wiki!

It’s hard to believe its March already and its been great to see whanau on campus for block courses. If you have contact courses its important to register for them with Massey and also advise us of your requirements early. It would be useful to note the following when planning your travel bookings:

- Travel bursary is a set amount so once it is gone you will need to make your own arrangements. - If you have to travel to a few contact courses, driving may be a cheaper option than flying. - If you need flights please give me as much notice as possible to take advantage of cheapest fares. - Costs incurred by changing flights will be met by student not TRP. - If you would like to arrange your own and seek reimbursement, that is no problem I just need re ceipts/e-ticket confirmation. - Accommodation ranges from $49 upwards depending on motel, campus accommodation ($50-$70) or marae stay ($20) are also options depending on availability.

Please give me as much detail as possible when making requests i.e. paper number, contact course dates, what travel, accommodation requirements you have. Contact courses are an excellent opportunity to meet your lecturers and class mates and you can also checkout our new offices on the 5th floor of the Social Sciences Tower. Ngā mihi nui, Jo

As recipient of TRP, scholarship bursars are also provided mentoring in addition to the financial support. All students have signed the terms and conditions which outline your commitment to TRP and Māori mental health development. Students MUST EN-SURE that you uphold your responsibilities not only to your programme of studies but to Te Rau Puawai as well, otherwise you will be withdrawn from the programme. Some of your responsibilities include:

Contacting TRP fortnightly to provide an update on your study progress

Contacting TRP as soon as possible to advise if there are any challenges, you are facing, that may hinder your studies, as we can assist and advocate possi-ble solutions.

Attend the entire compulsory TRP conferences. And if you are unable to you must contact the Co-ordinator well in advance to discuss the reasons why. These reasons must be valid.

Attending your compulsory on campus courses.

All assignments and course related work is to be submitted on or before the due date. If this is not possible, you must seek an extension from your paper co-ordinator and the Te Rau Puawai team must be advised immediately. If extensions continue without good reason and commitment to enhance time management has not been taken on board by the student, this could result in your withdrawal from the programme and/or repayment of scholarship.

Quality leadership and role model behaviour will be demonstrated at all times while a recipient of TRP. Any behaviour that might bring the pro-gramme into disrepute may result in being withdrawn from the programme and reimbursement of scholarship funds.

You have not applied to other sources for scholarships for the same purpose; i.e (Course Fees), if so, you MUST advise Te Rau Puawai. If your bursary has been paid by another source, your bursary will be returned to Te Rau Puawai.

TRP will help you as much as we can, but we also need your help so you can enjoy your studies.
