    Telecommunications is best understood as theintersection of a complex infrastructure ofglobally networked computers, an almostincomprehensible array of resources (library), a

    conceptual world of individuals and ideas sentand received electronically (cyberspace) and aplace where people from all walks of life havethe opportunity to share their wants, thoughts ,hopes and dreams (a virtual community).

    We have three keycharacteristics of cyberspace.

    It is virtual space: a state of mind that issimultaneously real and artificial

    It can be entered only by means ofsome sort of physical access device,such as a computer, telephone, or

    Asynchronous communicationPeople cannot be on the computer at the

    Internet service provider: ISP is based on theservice they offer, price, and the interface theyuse.

    Email: It lets you send and receive electronicmessages on your computer. Email addresses

    follow a certain form. First they contain apersonal handle that represents you.

    Listservs. they are made up of a group ofemails address for a group of people who formtogether around a common interest to discuss

    issues, share information.

    Bulletin boards: they are place where youcan post a message that other people

    can read at a later time. Bulletin boardsallow people to post messages.

    Usenet and newsgroups: Usenet is a word

    wide network of computers that allowsusers to exchange new articles.

    Telnet. It is a program that lets you log on

    to another computer on the Internet andgive it commands directly.

    Synchronous communicationSynchronous communications refers to

    electronic interaction that occurs at the same

    time.

    Internet relay chat: IRC or chat for short. It iswhen people from all over the world tocommunicate in real time.

    MUDs, MOOs and MUSEs: those are interactivevirtual worlds that players construct as they go

    along. These environments encourage studentsto collaborate and problem-solve.

    Conferencing tools: It allows you to interact withpeople across vast distances and in real time.There are various forms of conferencing tools ,

    the most common ones have audio, video.

    Telecommunication tools foraccessing information

    The growing availability of information and services onthe internet Is forcing us to face massive amounts ofinformation transmitted at accelerating speeds.

    World wide web: This is an information systemthat provides a uniform means of accessing

    all the different types of information availableon the internet. Hypertext is a method ofpresenting information by which clicking onselected words acts as a link to relatedinformation.

    Web browser; it is a software program thatfacilitates communication between youcomputer and the web. The two commonbrowsers are Netscape communicator andMicrosofts internet explorer.

    Uniform Resource locator: a web pagesaddress is called a uniform resource locator orURL for short. URL have three parts:

    The protocol identifier

    The domain or the host name of the server

    The documents pathname.

    Bookmarks: those are URL that yourcomputer remembers.

    Hypertext markup language: it is the languagein which WWW documents are written. Everyweb page is plain-text file that contains tags orcodes.

    File transfer protocol: It is a set of files madeavailable on a server for other users on theInternet to download.

    There are 2 types of transfer protocol:

    AsciiL also called text, or binary files, becauseyou will need to tell the computer which type

    of file you wish to transfer. Ascii usually havethe extension .TXT or .DOC.

    Binary files are typically date files, particularlygraphics files, that were created with anapplication program, such as a spreadsheetprogram. Binary files usually have extensionssuch as . EXE, .COM, .GIF, .JPEG

    Search engines: It allows you to type in keywords or phrases and then search web pagesfor these terms.

    Netiquette: In order to avoid problems in ourinteractions with other people, we oftendevelop a set of rules, called etiquette, that we

    use In our professional lives or in politecompany.

    Interacting with other: computers that areconnected together, it is people that give it life.There people come from many countries,cultures, and backgrounds.

    Using resources and services: Whenaccessing resources on a remote computer,students need to remember they are guests.They should learn not to overstay their

    welcome and to limit the time they spendusing a remote system.

    Copyrights: Materials on the internet arecopyrighted and protected by copyright laws.

    Commercial Activities: For a long time,commercial activity was not part of theInternet. However, this is changing as more andmore businesses gain access to internet.

    Be concise. Many people do not have the time to read longmessages. If student want people to pay attention to what theyhave to say, they should learn to keep their messages short.

    Avoid flaming. A flame is an inflammatory or criticalmessage. Students can learn to avoid triggering an upsettingresponse from a recipient by not sending junk mail.

    Be polite. Students should learn to personalize their messages bybeginning their message with the name of the person to whomthey are writing. They should learn how to be respectful.

    Use threads. Threads are series of responses to an originalmessage. By replying to messages instead of starting a newmessage, students can help a thread of communication.

    Be careful when using humor or sarcasm. For the most part,telecommunications is a nonvisual form of communication.

    Check e-mail regularly. Like a mailbox at home, e-mailshould be checked on a regular basis. Failure to do this canresult in not receiving or responding to a message in a timelymanner.

    Edit messages before replying. Sometimes students might wish toreply to a message someone sent on a listserv.

    Subject Lines. Any message should always include a subjectline that lets the recipient know what the message is about.

    Lurking. When first joining a listserv, take some time to monitorthe list before posting.

    Replying to a message on a list. If students are members oflistserv and somebody asks for help, students should offer help

    if they can.

    Password. Students should learn that a password is very privateand should be kept secret and changed frequently.

    Be forgiving. Above all else, student should learn to be willingto forgive small mistakes.

    Personal messages. Personal messages should always go to theperson for whom they are intended.

    Chain letters. Never send chain letters though e-mail. Theyare forbidden on the internet.

    Avoid ALL CAPS. Teachers should help students understand thatthey should not use all capital letters in their messages.

    Never assume privacy. Students should be helped tounderstand that they should never assume that their e-mailmessages are private.

    Do not flame another. Students should be cautioned never tosend inflammatory messages to other people.

    Spamming. Spamming is equivalent to the kink mail wereceived in our mailboxes at home or work. It refers to massmailings of electronic garbage to people you do not know.

    Do not assume that information is current. Students should learnnot to assume that the information they receive is current oraccurate.

    Do not open e-mail messages from unknown sources.Sometimes e-mail messages with attachments contain avirus.

    Electronic PenPals r KeyPals. Using this strategy, studentsare partnered to communicate with another person- a student,senior citizen, or professional in the field.

    We Mentoring. In Web mentoring, students are pairs via e-

    mail with experts or knowledgeable people in the field they arestudying.

    Web Resource. The Web resource strategy takes advantageof the Internet as a research tool.

    Web Collaboration. When schools partner via e-mail ormeet virtually at a web-site.Web survey. It asks students to create and post a surveypublicly, either through a Web site, listserv, or through securingpartner classrooms.

    Cooperative Challenge. In cooperative challenges, studentswork together to meet a challenge or solve a problem.
