For Patients Systems Used Overview
Exercise Testing
VO2 Max Test
• The VO2 Max test is completed to determine the maximum capacity of an individual's body to transport and use oxygen during exercise, which ultimately reflects the physical fitness of the individual. To measure this, the test usually involves a graded exercise test on a treadmill or stationary bike. The exercise intensity is progressively increased while measuring the oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration of the inhaled and exhaled air. VO2 max is met when at least 2 out of 3 predetermined endpoints are met (this may vary from study to study).
• There are many different protocols for incremental intensity that can be used, and should be considered depending on the population in question. When selecting the protocol to use for certain populations, keep in mind that VO2 max tests should only last about 8-‐15 minutes.
• Subjects completing a VO2 max test should be properly dressed, hydrated and satiated prior to testing.
The Technology Used:
¢ VMAX 29 Encore Model
¢ Software at MGH: Cardiosoft 6.51 version software, VMAX Encore software
¢ Software at CNY: Cardiosoft 4.2 version software, VMAX 21-‐1
What the participant can expect:
• Wear comfortable clothes that you can exercise in.
• Come well hydrated and satiated. • Inform the study team of any injuries or underlying conditions.
• The test will be explained prior to starting, feel free to ask any
additional questions. • The participant will be monitored by the study team including
nurses, dietitian and study doctor or nurse practitioner throughout the study. Vitals signs will be checked and the participant may be connected to a EKG throughout the test.
• A light snack and beverages will be available after the test.
