From the Publisher

TT hank you so much for all your good wishes, I am now well on the road to recovery andfeeling 100% better. I received a questionnaire from the Epsom & St Helier Trust a few

days ago, asking about my experience at the hospital, well they did ask, so I told them...

As this magazine was going to print we were hearing the news that all 33 Chilean miners hadbeen recovered from the collapsed mine shaft, what a wonderful story and such a happyending. On one of my visits to the surgery my nurse said she had been up all night watchingeach miner being pulled out of the shaft! I think we all felt for their families, and wanted toshare in their sheer jubilation when their loved ones appeared. It really has restored myfaith in the human spirit.

The ladies running the Ashtead Rec campaign are almost there, just one more push fordonations and they will achieve their target, their donation slip can be found on page 28.It’s a worthwhile campaign and already they have achieved so much for the little ones.

This month I am promoting Wallace & Gromit’s Great British Tea Party which runs from 1st-21st December in order to raise thousands of pounds for sick children in hospitals andhospices across the UK. Details of the event and where to obtain your fundraising pack canbe found on page 46.

I was invited by Sharon Felton of Swan Lettings to helpthem officially launch their new company, ‘SwanResidential’. As you know, Swan Lettings has beenspecialising in residential lettings for 14 years, but theyhave now branched out into sales. I should like to wishthem every success in their new venture.

Thank you for all your entries to the ‘Magic of the 80s’show, the tickets were won by Marion P. In thismonth’s edition, the Mezz Bar at the Leatherheadtheatre is giving away tickets to see the Moody Bluestribute band, Blue Onyx in concert on 4th December.Details of how to enter are on page 76.

The Children’s Trust are once again holding their annualChristmas Fair on 27th November, as ever, there will belots to buy and see, including Santa’s Grotto, moredetails can be found on page 12.

At the time of writing, I understand there are to be nofirework displays in Dorking or Leatherhead this year, our nearest are the Epsom and Brockham displays, so ifyou do along, have a great time. We went to the Epsomdisplay last year and took advantage of their park andride scheme from Chessington World of Adventures.

All the best for November.

In my experience, concern has been growingin Ashtead about speeding motorists. It isclear that we are far from being alone inthis regard, as evidenced for example by theincreased priority being given to this subjectby Surrey Police and the increasing numberof local authorities across the country whichhave introduced 20 mph speed limits. What could be done?

Speed HumpsSome Ashtead roads already have speedhumps and more could be built, if and whenfunds are available. They can help but theyhave several disadvantages:

• they are expensive

• Surrey County Council sets severecriteria for their installation

• some drivers seem to find them more ofa challenge than a hindrance

• some residents generally dislike themand believe that they cause damage tovehicles and drainage problems canarise.

Community Speed WatchAs a response to widespread and increasingconcern, Surrey Police has launchedCommunity Speed Watch in which “activemembers of the community monitor speedsof vehicles at specific locations using speeddetection devices.”

To date this has not been adopted locallybut recently residents of Farm Lane haveexpressed interest.

Some residents have expressed concernsabout possible threats to their personalsafety if participating in the scheme andunless it is used both extensively and over a

prolonged period, its efficacy may bequestionable.

Reduced Speed LimitsHas the time come to lobby for theintroduction of 20mph zones or for a 20mphspeed limit on some roads, perhapsespecially near schools?

There seems to be increasing concern atcentral government level. For example, in acircular issued in December 2009 theDepartment for Transport said:

• We want to encourage highway authoritiesto introduce, over time, 20 mph zones orlimits into streets which are primarilyresidential in nature and into town or citystreets where pedestrian and cyclistmovements are high, such as aroundschools, shops, markets, playgrounds andother areas, where these are not part ofany major through route.

• We want to make it clearer that highwayauthorities have flexibility in the use of 20mph zones and limits, and should applythe option best suited to the localcircumstances and that brings mostbenefits in terms of casualty reductionsand wider community benefits.

Ashtead HubHas the time come for 20mph speed limits inAshtead? Over the course of the comingmonths we shall be seeking your views andsuggesting that you comment on ourrecently introduced blog – Ashtead Hub(ashtead-hub.blogspot.com) Please sign upby providing your email address to let usknow what you think.

BackgroundAt the July open meeting of the LRAAndrew Bircher, Corporate Head of Service,MVDC Planning Department, informed thosepresent of a small budget ( mainly 106Developer Contributions) now available foruse to improve the High Street.

Those of you who have lived in Leatherheadduring the last 10 or so years know thatthere is hardly a more controversial subjectthan the High Street. It was Phase Two ofthe High Street Redevelopment thatbrought over 500 people to theLeatherhead Theatre to voice their concernover a plan that would virtually close theancient crossroads inLeatherhead. As a result, a consultant waspaid to evaluate the decision makingprocess in Leatherhead and ‘consultationwas found to be lacking’.

Structural problems under the road surfacemeant that the idea for a water feature atthe west end of the High Street had to beabandoned. Now sometimes referred to asthe ‘waterless feature’, it is either loved orhated according to whom you are speaking.Although the iron work is lovely, the stonematerials for both the wall and roadsurface have not withstood the test oftime.

Have we learned from past experience?Perhaps because of the controversysurrounding Phase Two Redevelopment andpartially because of interest expressed atthe July LRA open meeting, a consultationprocess is well under way. Every residentand visitor to Leatherhead will be invited tofill out a questionnaire. Information fromthat questionnaire will be analysed andused in the final stages of decision making. With the survey on line and in the HelpShop, and other shops in the Town, there isample opportunity for each of us to expressour wishes.

ProgrammeMany of the Traders in the High Street havealready been interviewed as to their views. This has been used to help design theconsultation process. The questionnaire isdue to be available, both online and inpaper form during the last weeks ofOctober (so it should be to hand when youread this). The initial analysis will takeplace before the next meetingOf the Town Centre Advisory Group at thebeginning of December. This grouprepresents many of the variousorganisations in Leatherhead, including theLeatherhead Residents’ Association. Thereis to be a public Exhibition of the findingsin January. The Advisory Group is to meetin February, and their recommendationsshould go to the March meeting of theMVDC/SCC Partnership meeting.

What do you think? The survey does not ask you to identifyyourself, but rather to give your postcode, and users of the Town who may resideelsewhere are expected to give valuableinsights into its future development. TheResidents’ Association will be helping toinform Residents of the Town, of theopportunities, and the consequences of thepossible outcomes. This is about the longterm future of our Town, and the steps weshould take now towards the eventualvision.

In framing the questionnaire we have askedthat the relevance of each section shouldbe related to the Planning Objectives of theLocal Development Framework. It’s yourTown, whether you live in it or just use itfor shopping, eating or leisure. So it’s yourfuture we are talking about.

Life at the Youth Centre continues to bebusy, but we have slowed the pace down alittle from that of the summer months.

We are still finishing the work we startedover the summer which includes the TeachingAward from the India Trip (we have apresentation evening on the 8th of Novemberwhich will be run by the young peoplethemselves), each of the group has puttogether an impressive portfolio which hasbeen assessed by moderators from Frontier(the people we travelled with) and all havequalified for their Teaching English as aForeign Language Award.

Another form of recognition we have offeredthrough our summer programme is the AsdanActivities Award. This was delivered duringour Summer Adventure Challenge in theBrecon Beacons, where we ask theparticipants to keep a reflective diary ontheir experiences and thoughts. When wereturn, we complete a portfolio following a“plan – do – review” format.

This whole process encourages the youngpeople to think about what they have gainedfrom an experience and helps to furtherdevelop the thought process of thinkingahead or “what will happen if” - a valuableskill in the navigation of teenage life.

We are drawing to the end of the racingseason for the Rally Karts. We will soon bestarting the classroom work to support theyoung people in gaining their Open CollegeNetwork qualifications, these are

qualifications that carry a nationallyrecognised currency and will enable to accessto courses at college or jobs in a relatedindustry.

The Karting is probably my favourite projectas not only do the young people learn lots oftechnical, teamwork and communicationskills, but they also have a huge amount offun at the same time. Many of ourmembership choose to come back as youngmembers of staff and develop theirleadership skills.

Our regular youth club sessions continue asnormal throughout the year and we willalways have something interesting going on,this term we are running a Mural Project(sponsored by Ashtead Decorative and FineArts Society) on the theme of equality insport, and a Skate Project.

With the nights drawing in and Christmaslooming fast, we remind ourselves that forsome people this is not the time of year thatHollywood would like to have us believe andwe make a particular effort to be a placewhere young people feel welcome and caredfor.

Ashtead Players retire to the bedroom with Alan Ayckbourn!‘Bedroom Farce’ 17th-20th November APMH

Three bedrooms are presented simultaneouslyon stage and the action between the threehouseholds flows in and out from one to theother during this hilariously hectic night. Thereare Ernest and Delia, an older, rather eccentriccouple celebrating an anniversary withpilchards on toast in bed, Malcolm and Kate, aprank loving, DIY obsessed couple preparing ahouse-warming party and Nick and Jan, anaccident prone pair, the former resting hisinjured back in bed with much complaining andself pity. The marital disasters of Trevor andSusannah, a truly ‘lunatic’ couple, weave inand out of each of the bedrooms causing mayhem in their wake.

The group has also recently launched Young Ashtead Players (YAPs), its youth sectionfor young people between the ages of 12 and 18.

Tickets at £10 (concessions £8) are available from theBox Office on 01737 640352.

Welcome to the new Property Blog by local Estate Agent RichardElphick, an insider’s thoughts on everyone’s favourite dinner partyconversation...!

The issue of house prices is a hot topic to every homeowner’s heart.Everyone has their opinion, but even that of experienced estate agentsis no more accurate about the future of property prices than that ofthe layman. Prices are subject to micro and macro economics, politicaldirection, taxation, the City, the Euro, the Dollar, and a whole host oftangibles that all combine to influence the market.

Of course, a movement in the market can even become a self-fulfillingprophecy when subject to reckless or dramatic media headlines, by thesmallest shred of ‘evidence’.

Fortunately, most people have by now become somewhat immune tomedia hype and speculation, and look to the fundamentals of theeconomy to try to gain an understanding of the market - which stilleludes most of us!

Ironically one indicator that is often misinterpreted is the one which isusually hailed as the most reliable source of all property data - the statsprovided by HM Land Registry based on completed sales. Althoughnewspapers will highlight the latest released figures, any estate agentwill tell you that they are seldom an accurate reflection of currentmarket sentiment. This can really only be measured by the activitylevels reported by agents on an almost daily basis, and we can certainlytestify that the current market in this area has been rosier than thatreported by HM Land Registry.

For example, the latest HMLR figures reflect completions whichhappened up to three months ago, which reflect exchanges thathappened up to six months ago, that in turn reflect offers that wereaccepted up to nine months ago on properties that came to marketpossibly over a year ago!

When we provide homeowners with our market opinion, we take thefullest account of current buyer activity in the context of availablecomparable stock across the market, and find this up-to-the-minuteapproach helps us to secure the very highest prices the market will pay- today!

Exciting new plans for Ashtead RECIn an ideal world an exciting play park would exist within every community, funded by the localauthority and paid for out of our taxes. The reality is far different. It appears in these days of budget

cut backs play parks are a soft target. Yet, we know just how important quality play is to the wellbeing of children (and their parents and carers!). Having an attractive play area within easy

reach of the village is a wonderful attribute to any community – keeping children off thestreets, safe and occupied. Any estate agent in Ashtead would tell you the same…

We partnered with MVDC Parks department to understand what local children want to see in an expanded, largerplay area. The plans are exciting, but they don’t come cheap. The initial cost for the new play park is £65,000. Asthe council are only able to fund up to £50,000 of this, it is ARC who is responsible for raising the rest.We have managed to raise £10,000 to date via a mixture of fundraising events, huge support from localbusinesses (Milners, Cairds) and local charities. We urgently need to raise a further £5k by December 2010 and we need the continued support of Ashtead to helpus… which is why we are appealing for donations from within our community in a bid to raise the amount we cancontribute to the play park development. We are now a registered charity and have no operational costs. Every pound you donate goesdirectly towards purchasing play equipment for the benefit of our children and our community.Let’s work together to fund and build a lasting legacy for the children of Ashtead.Thank you for your support.

Ruth came home with Sarah after her Saturdaymorning swimming class and called out her usual'hello' as she came through the door. There wasno reply so she called again, "Hello! We'reback!!" Still no response. It was a gloriousautumnal day but Ruth had to search the housefor signs of life.

Sam was hunched over a laptop at the diningtable, his neck cricked awkwardly to one side.He flicked his hand in her direction, as if shooinga fly, while talking into a mobile phone insertedunder his chin.Daniel was on the Playstation, lost in his ownanimated world and Ben was on the computer, earphones inserted, flicking between his 'wall'on Facebook and bizarre clips of frantic policechases on Youtube. Ruth began to question hereldest son's sanity when he began randomlytalking to himself, until she saw the 'in screen'picture of his friend Jack and realised that hewas actually talking on Skype.

Sarah disappeared to watch television and Ruthwent to the kitchen to make coffee. When sheput Sam's mug down beside him, she wasgreeted by a 'thumbs up' of appreciationfollowed by a patronising finger on the lips. Shefelt her temper rising but took her frustrationsout on the breakfast things which were stillstrewn over the table. As Ruth wiped awaypuddles of milk, trails of sugar and stray RiceKrispies, a plan began to form in her mind.

Ruth gave her family an hour. She read thepaper, sorted the laundry and watered theplants but there was still no movement from anyof them. She knew that Sam had an auto savefunction on his computer which would save anyopen work, so walked calmly to the fuse boxunder the stairs.

Everything stopped. Ruth raced back to thekitchen and wiped the guilt from her face.Within three seconds, the children and Samwere groaning with dismay and disbelief. "I'lljust go and check the fuse box" Ruth announcedand raced back to the scene of the crime."Everything seems fine here, it must be a powercut... What a nuisance!"

Ben stormed down from his room. "What's goingon? I've got important stuff to do... Mum can'tyou do something? He was joined by an equallydistressed Daniel. "I was in the middle of alevel! What's happened?" Sam was still on thephone but quickly ended the call and came tojoin in. "What the hell's going on? I've got so

much work to do. My computer battery won'tlast all day. Are you sure you've checked thefuses? Ruth reassured everyone that the fuseswere fine and that it was probably just atemporary power cut. She was sure the powerwould come back later.

After the initial withdrawal symptoms, Ben andDaniel decided to go into the garden and playfootball. Sam took Sarah out on her bicycle andRuth washed the car. The power was still off atlunchtime and Ruth suggested that they walkinto Leatherhead for lunch.

They were due to go to the bonfire nightfireworks that evening but Ben was sufferingfrom severe Facebook 'withdrawal' and was notin a good mood. "I don't want to go and seestupid fireworks, they're the same every yearanyway... What's the point! I'm not going. I'llstay at home and wait for the electricity tocome back on!"

Ruth wasn't sure what to do as she hadn'tintended to keep the power off all day. Sheweighed up the value of the food in the freezeragainst the need to respond to this teenagetantrum. Sam made the choice for her. "Don'tspeak to us in that tone, Ben! If you want to stayat home, that's fine by me. I will leave you atorch and you can make yourself a sandwich. It'syour choice..."

Sam, Ruth, Daniel and Sarah left for thefireworks just as it was getting dark. Ben wasbeginning to regret his decision but adolescentpride prevented him from changing his mind.Ruth felt terribly guilty but the others all had agreat time and the fireworks were magnificent.

When they returned home they found Ben,sitting at the dining table with a single torchpointed at Sam's laptop screen. Sam was furiousthat Ben was using up the last of his battery butthe expression of contrition on his son's face wassincere. He was watching a firework display onYoutube. While no one was looking, Ruth went to the fusebox and switched the power back on. Shewondered if there were going to be many powercuts this winter.

Since the handover of the presidency fromKeith Allardyce to Maurice Pagella afterVillage Day in the Summer, life has beenrather hectic for this Ashtead Club. Oncethe Village Day equipment is packed awayand the Treasurer has produced hisaccounts, the pleasurable task of helpingpeople in need – locally and internationally- can begin.

A very significant donation of £6000 will bemade to the ‘Help for Heroes’ charity at aspecial dinner on 11th November. This isthe largest single donation ever made byAshtead Rotary Club and has only beenmade possible by the generous support ofthe people of Ashtead and surroundingareas - especially for Village Day.Appropriately taking place on ArmisticeDay, members and guests will beaddressed by James Burn from ‘Help forHeroes‘ who will receive the cheque. Thedate also marks the 30th Anniversary ofthe inaugural meeting of Rotary Club ofAshtead back in 1980 and this will becelebrated by inviting founding members.

On the International front, the Clubdispatched a total of 12 Water SurvivalBoxes for the relief of those who have losttheir homes and are still suffering from theflooding disaster in Pakistan. These boxescost £150 each including airfreight andcontain basic equipment for survival – the

first priority being a water purification kitto protect against water-borne disease. The boxes also contain simple cookingequipment and utensils, tarpaulin, toolsand household items.

Another significant piece of charitablegiving came in the form of a donation of£1000 to ‘The Guildford Rotary EyeProject’. Led by a Rotarian Dr Sam Das, asurgeon based in Guildford, this projectsaves the sight of a person in India at acost of £15. However, every £5 donatedhere can be raised to £15 by Rotaryinternationally by use of matching funds sowe believe we can save the sight of 200people with this donation. A life-changingopportunity.Anyone who is interested in findingout more about the Rotary Club ofAshtead may contact Brian on275860 or Maurice on 276236.Meetings are held at Tyrrells WoodGolf Club on Thursdays 7.30 for 8pm

Well it seems that Nurse Sheila Smith’spoem last month has brought out somerather good local poets, here’s a poemfrom John Griffin…

John Griffin was born inDunfermline, Scotland in1957, lived in Ashtead until2001 and now resides inTolworth. He has beenbarking about, and recitingpoetry since schooldays. Achauffeur by profession,John has made much use ofthe time spent waiting for

clients by reading and writing verse. Duringsome of the longer journeys, he entertainshimself by reciting longer poems (Eliot's FourQuartets will occupy an hour on themotorway; Shakespeare’s Venus & Adonis anhour and a half). Before the advent of thehands-free carphone, this would elicitstrange looks from other road users. Thesedays, they just think he’s on the phone andhave no suspicion of his pottiness.

John says, "Many people have wondered whyI have bothered memorising reams of verse, but the truth is, so far from beinglaboursome, I absolutely love poetry. Overthe years, its forms, rhythms and music havefertilised my skull. Thus, when ideas popinto my head, they may couch in luxuriantnutrition, developing naturally into poems.Gosh! It sounds like I'm claiming all mypoems to be beautiful blooms! Not at all.Unfortunately, I still have to use a lot ofweed-killer..."

Love, Peace and AshteadHere on the boundary, keeping score,I mark each maiden over ‘M’.Few of the players know this chorenor how I sorely envy them, nor how the concentration straysfrom cricket’s laws and long delays.

Have you seen this south-west sky:its red-cheeked clouds and puffed-up breast

that, reaching Ashtead, hears the Rye,whose soft persuasion bids it rest? When other pretty shires are near, why does it pause precisely here?

Here where Surrey’s fringes skirtat London’s bustle, hemmed with green, the motorway takes all its hurtaway to places less serene. Here’s where cares and woes transformto quiet calm amid the storm.

Marking the day that Shakespeare diedwho “set the teeth” that men have snarled,St. George’s flags are hoist worldwideand here, from Milners to The Marld.Yet every Ashtead dweller knows:here be no dragons. Here’s the rose.

And Ashtead’s Hall remembers Peace, though memories of war remain.I fear man’s fighting may not ceasetill there are no fields left to gain.O, that ‘Peace’ graced every sparon all the village halls there are!

Beneath our feet, long worlds ago,the Roman, off the beaten track, trod the very clay we know, found Ashtead Woods and looked not back. That Roman tileman’s chiseled skillechoes in the mind’s ear still.

Even now, nice people cometo Ashtead and decide to stay;people like my dad and mum,and gentle clouds at close of dayred carpeting the damson sky.Again, I ask the question, why?

“Howzat?!” the leaping fielders cry -my daydream snaps at this ado.The umpire points in swift reply, which satisfies my question too,to heaven’s realms that overglidewhere Ashtead, love and peace reside.

Sweech House & Gravel Hill - Leatherhead

Sweech House (Nos. 2-6 Gravel Hill) was probably named from the ‘switch’ or fork in the roadand is one of the oldest and most attractive buildings in Leatherhead. It is an amalgam ofthree 16th century buildings (though part of No 2 may be 15th century) and all are timberframed. No 2 seems to represent a complete small house with smoke blackening in the roofsuggesting that it was originally an open hall structure. It was once a farm house and wasoccupied for more than thirty years in the mid 19th century by the widow Mary Brumwell, acowkeeper, who sold milk at the door. Her daughter continued in the same house as alaundress and ‘mangler’. Nos. 8 and 10, now called Jubilee Cottages, were built within theSweech House curtilage by local builder Charles Roberts in 1840 and originally calledJessamine Cottages. They were improved and renamed in honour of Queen Victoria’s DiamondJubilee when they changed hands in 1897.

Nos. 12-14 were built around 1875, obscuring the side elevation of Flint House, Nos. 16-18,which bears the date 1799. A timber framed building, it was renovated in that year and facedwith knapped flint by Benjamin Simmons (1751-1832), who shortly afterwards also built theside terrace of six cottages then known as Flint Row (and the almost identical Chitty’s Rowwhich used to stand in Bridge Street). The fine red brick house No 20, also by Simmons, hasthe date 1810 scratched on the brickwork near the front door. It was originally one of a pair,Vine Cottages, No 22 having sadly been demolished when Leret Way was built. Simmons builtmany of Leatherhead’s finest Georgian buildings; his works opposite the Parish Church areknown to have been visited by Nelson in 1802. It was due to the benefactor Herbert Reevesand the Countryside Protection Society that Sweech House has survived. It is set off by thestriking Catalpa or Indian Bean Tree in the War Memorial Gardens, the site of a smithy in the19th century.

Paul Thaweesin, and his lovely wife Au, verykindly invited me and my partner Matthew, toreview their restaurant, which opened in March2010. Matthew and I were very warmlywelcomed on a cold and miserable night inOctober.

Thai Pinto is a genuinely relaxed and informalThai dining experience, serving freshly prepared, authentic Thai cuisine using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients; the spices and herbsessential to the unique flavour of Thai cuisineare sourced from a specialist importer.

Paul explained to us that a Thai ‘Pinto’ is alunchbox, similar to the Japanese bento box andis used as a way of carrying food to school orwork.

We asked Paul to put together a selection ofstarters, and he came up with a wonderful rangeof items. We had dim sum; poached chicken, carrot and sweet Thai basil roll wrapped in ricepaper; duck spring roll, spare ribs; chicken satayand all arrived with a selection of saucesprepared in-house. These were really appetisingand proved a good introduction for the rest ofthe meal to come.

For our main courses Matthew chose ‘MassamunKaa’ lam slowly cooked with onion, potatoes, coconut milk and lime leaves. I chose ‘NeuaKrapraw’ stir fried beef with chilli, garlic, longbeans and holy basil leaves. We also chose to gowith our mains, a ‘Phad Phak Nam Man Hoi’which were stir fried vegetables served witheither oyster or black bean sauce.

This was all served with some sticky ThaiJasmine rice, which was a good foil for all thosewonderful flavours.

When everything arrived at the table, wenoticed that great care was given to itspresentation, we noticed that Au had also

decided to present us with a leg of aromaticcrispy duck to try.

It was all fantastic, Matthew’s lamb dish wasfragrant with a background of slight spice to giveit warmth, the lamb was so tender it gave wayunder the slightest pressure of the spoon.

My stir fried beef was delicious and very tender, again beautifully fragrant with a slight chilli hitbut not enough to deter from the lightness oftouch from the other spices.

In fact Au said that they were very happy toincrease the ‘heat’ of each dish, depending onwhat the customer wanted.

The duck was sensational, I am a great lover ofdark meat and thought that it lent itself verywell to the way in which it was cooked.

We decided to drink Singha Thai beer with ourmeal, which complimented our meal, although I did have a look at Paul’s wine listand it was fairly extensive, there was a wineto suit all pockets and tastes.

The Thai Pinto is very much a family affair, with Paul and Au running the restaurant withhelp from his two cousins (one is a chef). Theother chef, Patchanont Wetchapakdee (Nont),we discovered had worked in some of the verybest hotels in Thailand for over 17 years. Thewhole team had been together for many yearsand this comes across in the relaxed andinformal feel to the restaurant.

Paul also does a cracking lunchtime service, with 2 courses for £9.95, very handy if you’restrapped for time, or want something a littlemore exotic than the ubiquitous sandwich forlunch!

I do wish them great success in Leatherhead, they are such lovely people and an absolutedelight to meet. From 1st - 30th NovemberPaul is giving all diners a 15% discount (exceptfrom the set lunch and take away menus). Iwould urge you to try Thai Pinto, you’ll behooked!

World Première of new cantata - “The Song of Songs”“The Song of Songs” is a new setting of one of the Old Testament’s glitteringtreasures and the world’s most beautiful and mysterious love poems. It hasbeen set to music by Leatherhead Choral Society’s Musical Director IanAssersohn, and will receive its world première at the society’s concert “Love -Sacred and Profane” at the Menuhin Hall in Stoke D’Abernon on Saturday 27thNovember 2010 at 7.30 p.m.

Ian Assersohn trained at the Royal College of Music where he developed an interest in vocalmusic and music theatre. His musical style is melodic, approachable and eclectic. The styleof The Song of Songs is influenced by the western choral tradition as well as Jewish

liturgical music, klezmer and contemporarymiddle-eastern belly-dance.

The choir will also perform Carl Orff’s iconicwork, “Carmina Burana” (parts one andtwo). Its lusty lyrics, drinking songs, sinners’confessions and hymns in praise of gamblingand gluttony excite singers and audience

alike. The choir will be joined by Barisons Chamber Choir, Surrey County PercussionEnsemble, pianists Jan Assersohn and Gina Eason and two talented young soloists, sopranoHeather Caddick and tenor Rhys Bowden.

The Inner Wheel Club of Ashtead

Most people have not heard of the organisation “Inner Wheel”.However, many have heard of Rotary and all Inner Wheel membershave some connection with a Rotarian; most are wives or partnersof Rotarians but it also includes any female relative of a Rotarian.

Inner Wheel, in its own right, was founded in Manchester in 1923and now has clubs all over the world.

The Inner Wheel Club of Ashtead was founded in 1982 by twelve ladies. The founderPresident was Mrs Jean Haynes who has, this year, become President again for thethird time. The club now has twenty five members.

We actively support the local community with many of us helping Ashtead GoodNeighbours, Surrey Young Carers and other organisations. Although, strictly, InnerWheel is not a fund raising organisation we do raise money for various local andoverseas charities. This year the President has chosen to support the LeatherheadNight Hostel and we are also raising money to buy an ’Shelter Box’ which is full ofitems needed for survival by a family caught in a natural disaster or conflict.

Anyone interested in finding out more about The Inner Wheel Club ofAshtead should phone Mo Kirby on 01372 457205.

Apple Pressing At The Grange

Our clients and staff spent an afternoon pressingapples picked here in the gardens at The Grange thisweek.

First the apples were peeled on an automatic peelerthen pressed through a traditional apple press tomake juice. Cups were sold for 20 pence to staff.Spokesperson Anna Giokas said: ‘Our apple crop atThe Grange has been really good this year, this is afun way to use some of them up – and the juice wasdelicious.’

The apple press was lent to us by Epsom Apples, aproject which encourages people to make the most oflocally grown fruit. Epsom Apples estimates that a

million apples go to waste every year in the borough. They aim to make nutritious fruitjuice from this ‘waste’ and invite people to take their fruit to them for juicing.

In September four of us from Transition Ashtead visitedClarence House for Prince Charles’s ‘Start Garden Partyto Make a Difference’. http://www.startgardenparty.co.uk/ He had the idea for a publicevent four years ago because he felt that, for far too long, the prospect of living sustainably was only ever portrayedas dull and boring. No one, he said, explained that asustainable future could actually provide even more

satisfaction that the world we live in now.

The show was held in front of Lancaster, Clarence and MarlboroughHouses from 8th -19th September. There were over sixty standsincluding major companies, B & Q, M & S, BT, Addison Lee; plus manysmaller companies, charities and organizations, including Slow Food,Poly Solar, Global Action Plan, Wildlife trusts as well as first class entertainment from JoolsHolland and many others.

There was a beautiful drought garden designed by the expertin this field, Beth Chatto. A sustainable vegetable garden hadbeen built along the whole of the front of Clarence House.Raised beds were made from wide wooden planks with ahuge variety of plant stands and containers - sinks, baths, olive oil cans, tin cans, step ladders, an old door with holescut out for herb planters, and the re-cycled water-grownveg. Prince Charles is keeping this garden exhibit - he lovedit!

‘The Great Debate’, hosted by MarcusBrigstock, discussed environmental

issues with actor Roger Lloyd Pack, Ken Livingstone, SustainableDevelopment Commissioner Will Hay, and BBC head of comedy JonPlowman. You can imagine our delight (and loud cheer from theAshtead contingent!) when they highlighted the Transition network- they said that it is a vital ‘grass roots’ movement to help uschange to a low carbon, sustainable way of life and were pleased tosee Transition Ashtead at the Garden party.

It was truly inspiring to have such an enjoyable event solelydedicated to sustainability and the environment. I was veryheartened to feel that at last we have moved from arguing aboutthe issues to accepting that we have to take urgent action to live ‘within our means’.We came back with lots of fresh ideas and information to inspire us all to makeAshtead more sustainable. Maybe Prince Charles would like to hear how we’regetting on…

By November, gardens are beginning to lookshaggy and short of colour. So various late-flowering hardy chrysanthemums can be aboon to the gardener, especially in the dry, almost frost-free autumns that have recentlybecome the norm. The types ofchrysanthemum that are hardy and flower inthe autumn are the Korean, the rubellumand the Japanese semi-pompoms. They comein a wide range of colours and mix well withMichaelmas daisies, rudbeckias, echinaceasand Verbena bonariensis, the other staplesof autumn herbaceous plantings. Like allchrysanthemums, they are useful forarranging in vases, provided you don’t leavethem too late.

Hardy chrysanthemums make clumps, woody at the base, with stems 70-100 cmtall. They do best in well-drained, fertile, slightly alkaline soil, in full sun. But they arereally not fussy. Though reasonably sturdy, they are best staked, as autumn gales can befierce. To make compacter, sturdier plants, you should follow the advice of MichaelLoftus of Woottens of Wenhaston, who cutsthese plants back hard in early June andremoves any spindly stems. This has becomea popular technique with gardeners as a wayof staggering the flowering of different typesof hardy perennial. In the case of hardychrysanthemums, however, the floweringhappens at the same time, but you can getaway without staking.

In hot summers, it pays to waterchrysanthemums in dry weather or the stemsbecome stunted and straggly, and theflowering poor.

After the flowers go over towards the endof November, the stems should be cut downalmost to ground level and, in really coldregions, the crowns should be mulchedheavily with leaf mould or home-madecompost, held in place with pegged-downchicken wire. That said, I forgot to do thisbefore the last, very harsh, winter and theystill came through fine. They benefit frombeing divided when they become congested, about every three years, but do it in theearly spring, just as the new growth isemerging.

‘Cottage Apricot’ has single, bronzy-apricotflowers in October and November, on stemsup to 80 cm tall. It flops easily, so should bestaked. I think it’s one of the best varieties, which provides a zingy contrast to the pink, mauve and purple Michaelmas daisies.

‘Anastasia’ is a pompom with purplish-pink,double flowers with yellow centres, up to 4cm across. The plant grows to 75 cm tall.‘Mei-kyo’ is very similar but has slightly palerflowers and is shorter.

‘Nantyderry Sunshine’ is a Japanese semi-pompom with bright yellow double flowers, 3cm across, in October and November. It is asport from the equally garden-worthy‘Bronze Elegance’.

‘Ruby Mound’ is a popular variety with adense, short plant. The double 7cm flowersare deep red in colour.

‘Emperor of China’ flowers late, inNovember and December. It has a laxer, taller habit than most, and double, 6 cmflower heads in a very soft pink. The petalsare slightly quilled, which is most attractive, and the leaves turn red in autumn.

‘Purleigh White’ grows to about 85 cm, andhas white semi-pompom flowers with a hintof pink and prominent yellow central discs. It is a sport of ‘Mei-kyo’, so has the samehabit but a different-coloured flower.

MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMN

With winter approaching, opportunist “roguetraders” see a good opportunity to takeadvantage of people’s vulnerabilities and thedesire to have their homes safe, secure andwatertight for the coming colder months?

Surrey Police continues to work alongside anumber of partner agencies, developinginitiatives to help all members of ourcommunities be and feel safe in their ownhomes. As part of ongoing work we doalready, your Neighbourhood Teams arefocusing particular attention on providingguidance, support and awareness tomembers of the community on how to spotand deal with cold callers, rogue traders anddistraction burglars.

You should know, however, that you have aright to refuse to deal with anyone whocomes to your door uninvited. You canalways refuse to answer if you have anyconcerns about the caller. If you have a doorchain and do intend to answer the door, thenput the chain across before opening thedoor. We would not recommend that youagree for any work to be done withoutchecking that the business offering thisservice is totally legitimate and reputable.

Many areas have directories for businessesthat have received positive customerfeedback. Also, Trading Standards andConsumer Direct can offer advice onbusinesses and service providers who shouldbe trustworthy, reliable and who will carryout work for a reasonable price. In manycases, nothing can beat personalrecommendation. It is never a good idea toallow someone you don’t know to carry outwork for you. They may not be qualified orcompetent to do the work and what maysound like a cheap price could turn out to bean expensive choice, particularly if you endup paying out again to have bad work putright!!

Additionally, distraction burglaries can beparticularly upsetting as they prey onpeople’s trust in “authority”. For example,

a person may call, saying that they are froma utility company, calling to check on reportsof “faulty” water pipes, gas leaks orproblems with the electricity supply. Oncethey gain entry, they will distract theresident by asking them to keep an eye on atap or meter, while others go elsewhere inthe house to “carry out checks”. Manypeople have been distressed to find theyhave had money, bank cards, jewellery orother items taken in just a few moments. Please insist on seeing appropriateidentification for anyone claiming to be froma utility company. You can also telephonethe company to find out if they are operatingin the area. In fact, even if a uniformedpolice officer calls at your door they will beperfectly happy for you to ask to see theirwarrant card to identify themselves, or youcan even phone us on 0845 125 2222 toconfirm an officer’s details to yoursatisfaction.

Finally, if you are ever put in a position offeeling in any way vulnerable or frightenedby unwanted callers, please call the policeon 999.

London’s East End a 1960’s AlbumSteve Lewis £14.99Steve will be here inBarton’s Bookshop onSaturday 4th Decemberfrom 10.30am-4.30pm,chatting about his careerand signing copies of thisbrand new book.

The gritty reality of life in1960s East London, in starkcontrast to the pop revolution and stirrings offlower power elsewhere in the capital, isgraphically illustrated here in this fine collection ofphotographs. Widespread poverty, poor housing, industrial unrest and racial tension were theconcerns for these working-class Cockneys - andyet they had their traditions and morals, theircharacter and resilience standing strong in the faceof increasing strife. Taken in the early days ofSteve Lewis' career, before he became adistinguished national newspaper photographer, see life in the East End as it used to be, the oldfabric of the area now consigned to memory, longbefore dockland rejuvenation and Olympic stadia.
