The Cat in the HatOriginal Story by: Dr. SeussAdaption by: Trey Morton
The sun did not shineIt was too wet to play
So they sat in the houseAll that cold, cold, wet day.
They sat there togetherThey sat there, the twoThe boy said he wished
they had something to do.
Too wet to go outAnd too cold to play ballSo they sat in the house
Doing nothing at all
They couldn’t do anything. But just sit there and sit. They, of course, didn’t like it.Not one little bit.
Then something went bump! How that bump made us jump!
BUMP!
They looked! Then they saw him step in on the mat! They looked! And they saw him!The Cat in the Hat!And he said to them,Why do you sit there like that?
He said he had gamesHe said it with a shoutHe said he knew games we could play in the house
The two children, wide-eyedDid not know what to say,Their mother was out of the house For the day
But I, the Fish said, NO!Make that cat go away!Tell that Cat in the HatYou do NOT want to playHe should not be hereHe should not be aboutHe should not be hereWhen your mother is out
But the cat went onTo play was his wish,So he played a gameCalled Up-up-up with the Fish
He held me up highI was over his headI screamed and panickedI did not want to be dead
He said “Do not worry,I won’t let you fallI can even balance youWhile on top of a ball”
With a book in his handAnd a cup on his hat“I will not let you fall”Said the mischievous cat
Then he held up the cupAnd the milk and the cakeHe tossed up the bookAnd held me up on a rakeHe balanced the toy shipAnd the little toy manAnd with his cat tailHe held up a fan
And then as the catBounced around on the ballHe lost his balanceAnd then I DID fall
And as I looked aroundTo see what he droppedI soon figured outThat he dropped quite a lot
I yelled at him loudI told him to goBut he said “We can playAnother game that I know”
He sprinted outsideAs quick as a foxAnd he ran back inside with a big, wide red box
He opened the boxAnd before I could blinkTwo things darted outI didn’t know what to think
“Don’t worry,” said the catThey will not hurt you,They’re my two little things,Named thing one and thing two”
They’re hair is blueAnd they love to have funDo you want to playWith thing two and thing one?
The kids shook their hands, but I said no! no!Those things should not beIn this house! Make them go!
They brought out two kitesAnd they flew them insideBut then I said NOThose kites should not glide
The hit the lampsThey scratched up the wallThey hit the picturesAs they ran down the hall
I looked out the windowI trembled in fearI yelled to the kids“Your mother is here!”
The boy ran down the hallAnd he got his big netHe captured the thingsBut they weren’t done yet
The Cat packed up the thingsAnd he left in distressHe was sad that he leftOur whole house in a mess
There is no way to pick up this messI said.Your mom will come homeAnd then we’ll be dead!
And then the door openedAnd I never would’ve guessedThat the Cat would be backTo clean up his big mess
He rode through the houseOn a big red machineAnd with so many gearsIt started to clean
He rode out the doorAnd said “That is that.”And then he was goneWith a tip of his hat
