The Modern Academy is an in-depth short course tailored to advanced students and young professionals, through an intensive study and collaboration with faculty and peers, to enhance their skills of performance and composition in modern music. The course is offered in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Hongkong, with the support of Spring Workshop, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the University of Hong Kong.

With an internationally distinguished faculty, The Modern Academy 2015 is offered for the first time to conductors, singers, composers, and performers of most orchestral instruments (either as ensembles or individuals). The composition course is 16 days in length, and 11 days for all others. The programme is open to applicants from all nationalities.

A special focus of 2015 is the study of works of Edgard Varèse and Luciano Berio. 2015 marks the 50th anniversary of Varèse’s death and 90th anniversary of Berio’s birth. A special event will be a joint faculty/ student performance of Varèse’s masterpiece, Étude Pour Espace.

The course in 2015 provides an inspiring working environment: the opportunity to study rarely performed modern masterworks under expert mentorship, take part in special cross-disciplinary creative projects, and participate in a mini-festival of contem-porary music concerts. We challenge you, to do something different this summer.

現代學院是專為高程度音樂學生及年輕專業音樂家而設的深入短期課程,通過導師與學員之間密集式的課堂及協作,提升學員在現代音樂方面的演奏及作曲技巧。課程與香港歌德學院聯合策劃,獲Spring Workshop、香港演藝學院及香港大學支持。 2015年度現代學院邀得多位國際知名音樂家作指導,課程對象涵括指揮家、聲樂家、作曲家及主要管弦樂器演奏家(個人或組合參加)。作曲課程為期16天,其餘課程為期11天,學員不限國藉。

適逢作曲家埃德加.瓦雷茲逝世50週年及盧西亞諾.貝里奧90歲冥壽,本屆現代學院將以瓦雷茲及貝里奧的作品為焦點,當中將有由導師與學員合作演出瓦雷茲的經典大作《太空初探曲》。

在獨當一面的專家指導下鑽研平常少有演奏的現代大作、參與別樹一幟的跨界創作、登上舞台於小型現代音樂節演出──2015年度的課程提供最能激發創意的協作平台。這個夏季,接受我們的挑戰,來做些與別不同的新鮮事。

CONDUCTORS 指揮 (15-25.6.2015)The Modern Academy conducting students will concentrate on either ensemble/ small orchestra conducting (with Manuel Nawri) or vocal ensemble conducting (with John Winzenburg), focusing on core modern repertoire (listed on p.17-18). They may also choose to explore the art of improvi-sation and Soundpainting (with Timothy O’Dwyer).

現代學院指揮學生將在課程中研修室樂/ 小型樂團指揮(由瑪努埃爾.那利指導)或合唱指揮(由文盛伯指導),並以重要現代曲目(詳情參考頁17-18)為焦點。學員亦可選擇探討即興演奏及聲畫創作(由添姆.奧德懷爾指導)。

COMPOSERS 作曲 (10-25.6.2015)A small number of composers will be selected for The Modern Academy 2015. Students will meet for daily seminars with faculty composers and their peers. The seminar sessions will include lectures by the faculty on their own music and research areas, as well as opportunities for the students to present their own works. Students will also meet faculty composers for private lessons. With the concerts, masterclasses and workshops in other streams, student composers will be exposed to a dynamic creative environment. Each composer will be expected to produce at least one new work for The Modern Academy for workshop or performance. The content will be negotiated after acceptance, according to available resources of The Modern Academy and personal interests of the composers. The work will be workshopped - or even performed - by one of the visiting groups and faculty, or by a student ensemble. It may also be under the framework of one of these elective modules:

Workshop With The Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart 創聲獨唱團 (史圖加特) 工作坊

The Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, one of the finest contemporary vocal ensembles in the world, will participate in two reading sessions for composers.

This workshop will provide composers an unparalleled opportunity to draft a new short work for the Neue Vocalsolisten: to explore extended vocal techniques and the unique ranges of the ensemble’s members, and be open to necessary amendments to prepare the new work for future performance.

世界首屈一指的聲樂組合創聲獨唱團將為作曲學員作兩次試奏工作坊。

Decade: Writing For Moving Image 《拾・年》:為流動影像創作

Curated and mentored by composer Steve Hui, Decade is a cross-disciplinary platform for music and visual content that engages audiences and reinterprets Hong Kong [or another city] culturally and historically. Aiming to trigger new interpretations of the metropolis, student performer-composers (from both composition and performance streams of The Modern Academy 2015) will be invited to compose pieces in response to historical moving image of Hong Kong from the last 10 decades. This project is in collaboration with the Hong Kong Film Archive and the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority.

與香港電影資料館及西九文化區管理局合辦、由作曲家許敖山策劃及指導,《拾・年》是揉合視覺及聽覺元素的跨界別創作平台,從文化及歷史角度重新演繹香港(或其他城市)。分別來自作曲及演奏課程的演奏/作曲學員將為來自過去10個10年的香港影像創作配樂。

Composing for Dance and Working with Dancers 舞蹈音樂創作

Led by Joyce Beetuan Koh, this module is designed for composers who wish to develop composition skills in composing for dance and build confidence in working with dancers. It is conceived as a laboratory: a place for the exchange of knowledge between the two disciplines, without the pressure of production. Through a series of workshops (including improvisation sessions) composers will be able to experiment with their musical ideas; learn about body movement; how dancers respond to music and sounds; and explore elements of space, time, form and direction.

The faculty will provide support by conducting discussions and facilitating peer critique sessions. There will be an opportunity at the end of the Academy where the collaborative work can be shared and presented.

由許美端指導,此課程為有意研究舞蹈音樂寫作技巧的作曲家而設,學員亦可從中學習與舞蹈家合作的經驗。課程是讓音樂與舞蹈兩個範疇的知識作交流的平台,從而進行各種實驗而不受完成製作的壓力。透過一系列的工作坊(包括即興演奏環節),作曲學員可嘗試應用不同作曲理念、理解形體動作、舞者如何與音樂和聲音互動,以及探討音樂中時間、空間、曲式和方向等元素。

Other lectures by faculty members will include Ken Ueno discussing his recent person-specific concertos, installations, as well as his approach to extended vocal techniques in the context of experimental improvisation.

Eli Marshall will lecture about the works of Edgard Varèse and others, and about using music theory, particularly alternative tuning systems, as tools for experimentation in an increasingly diverse and international field.

其他課堂包括上野健討論他近期的個人化協奏曲及聲音裝置創作,以及探討他在實驗性即興演奏中對聲樂延伸技巧的處理手法。

It will provide a unique opportunity to perform rarely-heard 20th/ 21st century works, as well as works by faculty and student composers. Individual performers or ensembles are welcome to apply.

Soundpainting聲畫

Soundpainting is the universal multidisciplinary live composing sign language for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. Presently the language comprises more than 1200 gestures that are signed by the Soundpainter (composer) to indicate the type of material desired of the performers. The creation of the composition is realised, by the Soundpainter, through the parameters of each set of signed gestures. The Soundpainting language was created by Walter Thompson in New York in 1974. The workshop is led by Timothy O’Dwyer.

聲畫是個跨界別的符號語言系統,為音樂人、演員、舞者和視覺藝術家作即場創作而設。此語言現包含超過1200種不同動作,讓聲畫師(作曲家)用以標示作品中由各演出者負責的不同素材,演出時聲畫師透過各種動作的組合變化來呈現不同作品。聲畫符號由華德.湯遜於1974年在紐約設計。此工作坊由添姆.奧德懷爾指導。

SINGERS 聲樂 (15-25.6.2015)The vocal course of The Modern Academy primarily focuses on small ensemble training in contemporary classical vocal music. Individual singers or small vocal ensembles are welcome to apply. Led by the world-famous Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart (Germany) and Hong Kong-based choral conductor John Winzenburg, the course will provide a unique opportunity to perform rarely-heard 20th/ 21st century vocal (or mixed instrumental/ vocal) works, including compositions by faculty and student composers.

The course accepts applications from vocalists of all voice types. In addition to the repertoire the course may include one or more elective modules (from the above instrumental programme), as well as the following workshops:

- German diction- Extended vocal techniques, particularly related to Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Stimmung (1968)- Extended vocal techniques in the context of experimental improvisation- Sprechstimme technique in Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire (1912)

現代學院的聲樂課程集中於現代曲目的小組合唱訓練,歡迎學員以個別或組合報讀。由世界知名的創聲獨唱團(德國)及香港合唱指揮文盛伯指導,課程讓學員有機會演繹少會演出的二十及二十一世紀的合唱曲目(器樂伴奏或純聲樂),學員亦會參與演出學院導師和作曲學員的作品。

課程不限聲部。除了學院的研習曲目外,學員可同時選修一個或以上的選修課程(參照器樂演奏課程),以及下列課程:

The course accepts applications from performers of most orchestral instruments: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Percussion and Piano; as well as Chinese (or other ethnic) instruments. Other ensemble combinations may be accepted upon successful application.

In addition to the repertoire listed on p.17-18, the course may also include one or more elective modules:

Hong Kong New Music Ensemble香港創樂團(HKNME)成立於2008年,旨在為香港觀眾帶來高水平的現代音樂演出。自成立以來,樂團極具創意的節目製作,以及與來自不同界別藝術家的跨媒介合作計劃受到廣泛讚賞。 香港創樂團曾與進念.二十面體、廣東現代舞團、奧沙畫廊等團體合作,亦曾於香港及中國內地的大學內任駐校樂團。樂團曾到廣州、成都、上海、澳門、吉隆坡、台北、新加坡、澳洲荷伯特、柬埔寨吳哥窟等地演出。 2012年,香港創樂團成為藝發局一年資助團體。2013年,樂團獲民政事務局「藝能發展資助計劃」的項目計劃資助,籌辦「現代學院」。 2013至2014年度,香港創樂團第六樂季的節目包括演奏利蓋蒂、萊許、羅米泰利,以及一眾中國當代作曲家作品的專場,並在香港藝術節中演出。2014年起,香港創樂團為香港演藝學院駐校藝團;2014-2015樂季節目包括於新視野藝術節、自由野、法國五月及香港藝術節的演出。

The Hong Kong New Music Ensemble (HKNME) was founded in 2008 to present contemporary music to Hong Kong audiences. It has been widely praised for its innovative programming and interdisciplinary collaborations with artists from different mediums. The HKNME has collaborated with organisations including Zuni Icosahedron, Guangdong Modern Dance Company and Osage Gallery, and often has residencies at universities in Hong Kong and greater China. It has toured to Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, Macau, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Singapore, Hobart and Angkor Wat. In 2012, the HKNME was named a one-year-grantee by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. In 2013 it was awarded a project grant under the Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme of the Home Affairs Bureau for organising “The Modern Academy”. The group’s 6th season in 2013-2014 included concerts dedicated to Ligeti, Reich, Romitelli and Chinese composers, and appearances at the Hong Kong Arts Festival. The HKNME is Resident Company at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts since 2014; and the season in 2014-2015 includes concert presentations as part of New Vision Arts Festival, Freespace Fest, Le French May and Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Founded in 1984 as an ensemble for contemporary vocal music under the umbrella of Musik der Jahrhunderte, the Neue Vocalsolisten have been an artistically autonomous chamber music and music theatre ensemble since 2000. The seven concert and opera soloists view themselves primarily as researchers and discoverers, collaborating intensively with both established and young contemporary composers. With a vocal range from coloratura soprano via countertenor to black bass, the ensemble examines new sounds vocal techniques, as well as forms of vocal articulation. Music theatre and interdisciplinary work with electronics, video, visual art and literature are as much a part of this research concept as a confrontation with elements of early and modern music. The partners of the Neue Vocalsolisten are leading specialist ensembles and radio orchestras, major international opera houses, the independent theatre scene, electronic studios, as well as numerous festival organisers and concert series for New Music all over the world. In recent years, the ensemble has attracted interest internationally with music theatre productions such as Freizeitspektakel by Hannes Seidl and Daniel Kötter, José-Maria Sánchez-Verdú’s Aura, Brian Ferneyhough’s Shadowtime, and Julio Estrada’s Murmullos de Paramo. In addition, the Neue Vocalsolisten have taken productions in the genre of vocal chamber music theatre, whose development they decisively influenced, to many European countries, the US and Argentina, performing works by composers including Oscar Strasnoy, Luciano Berio, Lucia Ronchetti, Luca Francesconi, Friedrich Cerha and Giovanni Bertelli.

Manuel Nawri received his musical training in Freiburg and Odessa. Since 2008 he is a Professor at Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin and was in 2008-2010 Artistic Director of Klangzeitort. Nawri works as guest conductor with such groups as Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble musikFabrik, Basel Sinfonietta, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble Mosaik, Ensemble Courage Dresden, the ELISION Ensemble and Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. In 2008 he was in charge of the rehearsals for Benedict Mason’s new piece with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Nawri has conducted world premieres of more than 220 compositions and radio recordings at all major German radio stations and in Switzerland, Austria, France, Poland, Estonia, Iceland, Korea, the Russian Federation, the US and Australia.

Conductor John Winzenburg is an Associate Professor of music at Hong Kong Baptist University, where he conducts the Cantoría Hong Kong and the HKBU Choir. He and the Cantoría earned a Gold Medal at the Czech 2010 Festival of Songs Olomouc, and they presented a Weekend Concert at the Concert Hall, National Centre for Performing Arts in Beijing in 2012. Winzenburg also appears regularly in vocal and instrumental performances with the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. He has been featured as clinician at the 2013 San Juan Coral International Choir Festival in Argentina and the 2014 10th World Symposium on Choral Music in Seoul. Winzenburg has premiered a number of noteworthy works, including the US premiere of Karura by Japanese composer Akira Nishimura with renowned oboist Thomas Indermühle, Aurora by Joyce Tang, the cantata Anesti by James Boznos, and new compositions for Indonesian gamelan and Western instruments.

John Winzenburg

指揮家文盛伯現任香港浸會大學副教授,並出任大學室樂合唱團及大學合唱團指揮。2010年,文博士帶領合唱團到捷克參加歐洛慕奇歌唱音樂節,並在室樂合唱團組別中贏得金獎。2012年,他與香港浸會大學室樂合唱團在北京國家大劇院的週末音樂會「中外合唱新聲」中獻唱。 文盛伯定期參與香港創樂團的器樂及聲樂演出。2013年,他在阿根廷舉行的第十屆「聖胡安國際合唱節」中擔任講座暨工作坊講者;並在2014年8月於第十屆南韓首爾國際合唱會議擔任講者。文盛伯首演過不少重要作品,包括日本作曲家西村朗作品《迦樓羅》的美國首演、鄧慧中的《極光》、龐樂思的清唱劇《復生》及寫給印尼嘉美蘭和西方樂器的新作品。

Award winning composer and sound artist, Singaporean Joyce Beetuan Koh’s creative work are featured at international festivals, notably at Birmingham Frontiers Festival, International Computer Music Conference, Dans:Festival Singapore, Biennale Musiques France, and Melbourne Arts Festival. Highlights of her commissions include: Tai for symphony orchestra and was performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Hungarian Radio Orchestra, the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra; The Water Burns for chamber ensemble commissioned by Concertgebouw Netherlands and performed by the Nieuw Ensemble; The Last Lumière for dance by the Singapore Arts Fission Company, On the String, a multimedia production by the Singapore Arts Festival, The Canopy, a sound installation was presented at the World Stage Design Festival UK. Koh holds a Ph.D. in Composition (York, UK) and Postgraduate Diploma in Music Computing (IRCAM, Paris). After 20 years working in Europe, she is currently Vice Dean of Interdisciplinary Studies at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore.

Steve Hui (aka Nerve) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Hong Kong, whose practice mines the boundaries between contemporary music, sound art, multimedia theatre and underground subcultures. He studied composition and electronic music at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. His music has been presented at the Hong Kong Arts Festival, Microwave International Media Art Festival and New Vision Arts Festival. He has received numerous commissions from the City University of Hong Kong, Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, Zuni Icosahedron, City Contemporary Dance Company, among others. Hui’s recent works include: digital opera The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci (2010), The Four Infinities for the opening of the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre (2011), live soundtrack of 1950s film Family, Spring, Autumn with Kung Chi Shing, and also as music director of Decade for the West Kowloon Cultural District (2013) and cinematic opera 1984 (2014).

許敖山生於香港,香港演藝學院音樂碩士(作曲及電子音樂),經常以多重身份遊走於現代音樂、聲音藝術、多媒體劇場及地下文化之間。其作品曾於香港藝術節、深圳香港城市建築雙城雙年展、新視野藝術節、微波國際媒體藝術節等演出,並獲香港城市大學、現在音樂、香港創樂團、香港小交響樂團、進念・二十面體、城市當代舞蹈團等委約創作。近年主要作品包括多媒體歌劇《利瑪竇的記憶宮殿》(2010)、邵逸夫創意媒體中心開幕節目《四象萬相》(2011)、與龔志成合作《家‧春‧秋》(2013)現場電影配樂及《1984》(2014)電影歌劇,並擔任西九文化區《拾 ‧年》音樂總監 。

許美端

新加坡作曲家兼聲音藝術家許美端作品屢獲殊榮,亦曾於各大小國際音樂節中演出,包括伯明翰前沿音樂節、國際電腦音樂研討會、新加坡濱海藝術中心舞蹈節、法國雙年音樂節、墨爾本藝術節等。 她的委約作品眾多,包括曾由英國廣播電台交響樂團、匈牙利電台樂團和挪威史塔凡傑交響樂演出、為管弦樂團而寫的《泰》;荷蘭阿姆斯特丹音樂廳委約、由荷蘭新音樂室樂團演奏的《水燃》;新加坡化生舞蹈團委約為舞蹈作品《最後一絲光》創作配樂;新加坡藝術委約的多媒體作品《弦之上》,以及於英國世界舞台設計藝術節展出的聲音裝置《天篷》。 許氏為英國約克大學作曲博士,並獲巴黎IRCAM學院音樂電腦研究生文憑。在過去20年一直於歐洲從事音樂創作,現為新加坡南洋藝術學院多媒體課程副院長。

Eli Marshall's works have been performed at Germany's parliament building, in South Korea's largest Buddhist temple, and in a six-month installation at the Smithsonian Institution (US); a dozen of his orchestral works have premiered in Asia, Europe, and the United States. He was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship, the Kaplan Award (ASCAP), and the Douglas Moore Fellowship. He was Artistic Director of the Beijing New Music Ensemble (2006-2010); in 2013 he curated concerts of contemporary music at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art. He has composed for film directors Ann Hui (recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra) and Wong Kar Wai. He holds degrees from Bard College, the Curtis Institute of Music, the Hamburg University of Music and Theatre, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Currently, he is Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Faculty in the Music Department at Cornell University.

Eli MarshallKen Ueno is a composer/ vocalist who is currently an Associate Professor at UC Berkeley. He has been awarded the Rome Prize, the Berlin Prize, and a fellowship from Civitella Ranieri. His music has been performed by Kim Kashkashian, Robyn Schulkowsky, Alarm Will Sound, the Nieuw Ensemble, and Frances-Marie Uitti. Ueno’s piece for the Hilliard Ensemble, Shiroi Ishi, was featured in their repertoire for over ten years. As a vocalist, he has performed with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Joey Baron, Ikue Mori, and Joan Jeanrenaud amongst others. Over the past five years, he has performed as soloist in his vocal concerto with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Aiyun Huang enjoys a musical life as soloist, chamber musician, researcher, teacher and producer. She was the First Prize and the Audience Award winner at the Geneva International Music Competition in 2002. Recent highlights include solo with L’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Taipei Symphony Orchestra. A champion of new music, Huang has premiered over 100 works over the last two decades internationally.

Born in Kaohsiung, a southern city of Taiwan, Huang holds a DMA degree from the University of California, San Diego. She holds the position of Associate Professor in Percussion and was recently appointed a William Dawson Scholar at McGill University. She teaches annually at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and soundSCAPE festival.

黃皚雲Currently Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, internationally recognised violinist and composer James Cuddeford graduated from Yehudi Menuhin School in England, the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester. His principal teachers were Yehudi Menuhin, Karlheinz Stockhausen and György Kurtág. He has won a series of important competitions including the first prize in the 1996 Charles Hennen International Competition in Holland. Cuddeford has performed extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Australia as both soloist and chamber musician, including collaborations with artists such as Charles Rosen, Stephen Kovacevich, Cristina Ortiz, Michael Collins, Heinz Holliger, Yehudi Menuhin and Michel Dalberto. As a highly active and renowned interpreter of contemporary music, James Cuddeford has worked with and premiered the music of prominent composers such as Dean, Kurtág, Smalley and Birtwistle. Cuddeford lectured in violin at both the Elder Conservatorium and the Australian Institute of Music, and was a member of the Australian String Quartet from 1998 to 2006.

Simon Hui played double bass in the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra for 20 years. He was also Principal Bass player of the City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong until 2013. He has been a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2009. He has also been active in the non-classical scene, and was a founding member of the jazz and world music influenced group Han Shan.

許裕成William Lane performs as a soloist, orchestral player and chamber musician all over Australasia, Asia, Europe and North America. He studied under Jan Sedivka (Australia), Bruno Giuranna (Italy) and Garth Knox (France), as well as in Germany at the International Ensemble Modern Academy, and in Switzerland at the Lucerne Festival Academy under Pierre Boulez. He has taught at universities in Australia, the US, the UK, Mexico, Ireland and China.

He was Principal Viola of Ensemble Resonanz, a member of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and guest violist of Ensemble Modern, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong and the Lucerne Festival Strings. He is currently a member of the Anonymous Quartet (Hong Kong); and is Founder/Artistic Director of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, China’s premiere new music group resident at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. He was awarded the 2013 Award for Young Artist (Music) from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Saxophonist and composer Tim O’Dwyer is currently the Head of Cotemporary Music at LASALLE College of the Arts in Singapore. He has studied saxophone with Evan Parker and composition with Richard Barrett. O’Dwyer is one of the inaugural Fellows of the Academy of the Arts of the World (Cologne) and is currently a scholar with the creator of Soundpainting Walter Thompson. O’Dwyer is currently involved in the international collaborative ensemble The Fold in Cologne and Singapore, The Tim O’Dwyer Trio, ELISION Contemporary Ensemble and Shangyin Trio, to name a few.

O’Dwyer has presented his original works and premiers of new saxophone music at events and venues including the Montreux Jazz Festival, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Sydney Opera House and Radio Bremen. He holds a Ph.D. in Composition and Philosophy from Queensland University of Technology with his research drawing links between the work of Gilles Deleuze, composition and improvisation.

Timothy O’Dwyer

Clarinetist Leung Chi Shing is a member of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. He obtained his Master’s Degree at San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Bachelor’s degree at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, studied with Anthony Wong and Ben Freimuth. He has worked with groups including Hong Kong City Chamber Orchestra, Hong Kong Wind Kamerata, and These New Puritans, among others. Leung was the clarinetist in Rock Hard, a production of Hong Kong New Vision Arts Festival 2008, and its re-run in 2010 as a programme of Shanghai Spring International Music Festival and Shanghai World Expo. Leung has also performed in numerous international music festivals in China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, and the US. Leung is currently the conductor of Chung Chi Wind Orchestra.

Since winning the Classical Fellowship Award from the American Pianists Association, pianist Thomas Rosenkranz’s concert career has taken him to four continents. His repertoire extends from the works of J.S. Bach to premieres of works written exclusively for him, often including improvisation into his performances. During recent years, he has concertised in major Asian cities including Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Jakarta, and Bangkok, and has been appointed to visiting residencies and professorships at the Sichuan Conservatory, Xinghai Conservatory, University of California at San Diego, and the Higher Institute de Musique Tunis, among others. Rosenkranz completed an undergraduate degree from Oberlin College Conservatory and earned a Doctorate in Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music. On behalf of the Presser Foundation, he studied with Yvonne Loriod-Messiaen in Paris. He is currently an associate professor of Piano at the College of Musical Arts at BGSU where he teaches piano, chamber music and leads the improvisation collective, The Combustible Arts Ensemble.

Thomas Rosenkranz

David Thompson is Lecturer in Horn at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music (Australia). He studied at the Indiana University School of Music with Michael Hatfield, where he received the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees with high distinction, as well as Performer’s Certificate. His distinctions in international competitions include the first prizes of the American Horn Competition (Michigan, 1994) and the Performance Competition of the International Horn Society (Munich, 1989). He has performed regularly as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, North America, and Asia. From 2011 to 2012 he assumed the position of Principal Horn of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, after having served for twenty years as Principal Horn of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (Spain). As a pedagogue, he was Professor of Horn at the Catalonia College of Music, and has served on the faculty of the Aspen Music Festival and School. He has presented masterclasses and workshops at institutions around Europe, the United States, and Asia.

湯馬士.羅森克朗茲

自贏得美國鋼琴家協會的古典音樂獎後,湯馬士.羅森克朗茲的演出遍及四大洲,演出曲目由巴哈涵蓋至為他而寫的新作首演,當中常包括即興元素。 近年,羅森克朗茲於亞洲多個重要城市演出,包括上海、北京、香港、東京、耶加達、曼谷等,亦於四川音樂學院、廣州星海音樂學院、美國加州大學聖地牙哥分校、突尼西亞高等音樂學院等擔任訪問教席及教授。 羅森克朗茲於歐柏林音樂學院完成學士學位,並於伊士曼音樂學校取得音樂藝術博士。他曾以亞洲新聞基金會代表身份於巴黎隨梅湘夫人伊芳.洛里奧學習。他現為博林格林州立大學音樂學院副教授,於該校任教鋼琴演奏及室樂演奏,並領導即興組合Combustible藝術樂團。

Oboist Yiu Song Lam is Director and Founder of Hong Kong Wind Kamerata. Yiu studied at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Queensland Conservatorium, the Royal Academy of Music in London, the Rotterdam Conservatorium in Holland and the Cologne University of Music in Germany.

Yiu has appeared as soloist with numerous orchestras in Asia and Europe, including a tour with the London Virtuosi and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields under the baton of Sir Neville Marriner. He performs extensively as chamber musician, including many international festivals, as well as the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM). He has given masterclasses at the Central Conservatory of Music, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, the Taiwan National Chiayi University, the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore and the State University of Music and the Performing Arts Stuttgart in Germany.

Currently, he is in the faculty of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Institute of Education and the Hong Kong Baptist University.

Yiu Song LamPianist Linda Yim is a member of Hong Kong New Music Ensemble. Devoted to promoting modern music in Hong Kong, she is an active performer of modern music in town. She has performed in New Generation, Musicarama, New Vision Arts Festival and events hosted by Hong Kong Composers’ Guild, and regularly does premieres for local and overseas composers. Besides, she is frequently invited to perform in modern music festivals in such places as Shanghai, Malaysia and Cambodia. Apart from the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Yim also collaborates with other professional new music ensembles, such as Stroma (New Zealand). Graduated from Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Royal College of Music London and Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Yim is currently teaching at Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Institute of Education, HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education, and CUHK School of Continuing and Professional Studies.

鋼琴家嚴翠珠現為香港創樂團團員。致力於推動現代音樂,嚴氏活躍於演奏現代音樂,經常參與各地的現代音樂節演出,如香港電台第四台「音樂新一代」、音樂新文化、新視野藝術節及香港作曲家聯會主辦的活動,並經常為本地及海外作曲家作首演演出。此外,嚴氏曾參與上海、馬來西亞及柬埔寨等地的現代音樂節演出,亦曾跟紐西蘭新音樂組合Stroma合作。 嚴氏先後畢業於香港浸會大學、香港演藝學院、英國皇家音樂學院及澳洲雪梨音樂學院,現任教於香港浸會大學、香港教育學院及香港中文大學專業進修學院。

雙簧管演奏家姚桑琳為管樂雅集的創辦人兼總監。畢業於香港演藝學院,姚氏及後於昆士蘭音樂學院、倫敦皇家音樂學院、荷蘭鹿特丹音樂學院、德國科隆音樂大學進修。

姚氏常以獨奏家身份與歐亞各地樂團合作,曾獲邀與倫敦名家樂團及由內維爾・馬里納爵士指揮的聖馬丁室樂團隨團作巡迴演出。姚氏活躍於室樂演奏,經常在國際音樂節演出,並多次在國際現代音樂協會之世界音樂日獻藝。姚氏曾在世界各地的院校舉辦大師班,包括北京中央音樂學院、上海音樂學院、台灣國立嘉義大學、新加坡楊秀桃音樂學院、德國史圖加特音樂學院等。

姚氏現於香港演藝學院、香港中文大學、香港大學、香港教育學院及香港浸會大學任教。

Cellist Zhu Mu has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in Asia, Europe and North America. Mu was the winner of the Central Conservatory of Music Cello Competition in Beijing, the 4th China National Duo Cello Competition, and prize winner of the 2006 Bayreuther International Music Competition in Germany. He is the cellist of the Beijing New Music Ensemble, frequent participant of the Beijing Modern Festival and the“211” recording project. Mu has performed in new music concert series held in South Korea, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. He is a member of the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble since 2013. As an educator, Zhu Mu has been frequently been invited to give masterclasses in institutes throughout China. Currently, Mu is member of the cello faculty at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He received his undergraduate degree with honours from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and his two Masters of Music degrees and Doctorate in Germany. Mu has also received masterclass trainings held by Rostropovich, Mischa Maisky, and Bernard Greenhouse.

大提琴演奏家朱牧在亞洲、歐洲及北美常作獨奏及室樂演出,曾獲獎項包括中央音樂學院第四屆大提琴比賽第一名、第四屆全國大提琴比賽二重奏組第一名以及在2006年德國拜羅伊特國際比賽中獲獎。 朱氏為北京新樂團的大提琴手,經常參與北京現代音樂節及「211」灌錄計劃,並在南韓、北京、廣州、香港等地舉辦的新音樂專場音樂會中演出。2013年起加入香港創樂團。 教學工作方面,朱氏曾應邀在中國多間學院教授大師班,現為中央音樂學院大提琴教師。朱氏以優異成績畢業於中央音樂學院,及後於德國取得雙碩士及博士學位。朱氏曾在羅斯特洛波維奇、米沙・麥斯基和蕭伯納・吉列特的大師班中學習。

The Modern Academy 2015

課程及報名The Modern Academy 2015 is open to applicants of all nationalities with no age limit. We expect most applicants to be at a high artistic standard, with most at an undergraduate/ postgraduate level.

Applicants must be available for the full course, and the course fee only includes tuition (not accommodation, transportation or meals). We will provide a list of discounted hotels and hostels for successful international applicants.

現代學院2015不限年齡國藉,歡迎達本科生/ 研究生藝術水平之人仕報讀。
