What is happening with the MVs?

We are lucky this month to have 2 contributions from the Japanese. It is wonderful to receive news from this significant section of MV. The French have returned from their long summer holidays and back to “work”. And they have an important job coming up - the French ambassador will be visiting Muzium Negara on 14/10/17. Yes, it is back to “work” for all MVs. The training for Batch 30 started on 9/9/17 – back to our usual schedule.

MVJ invited Ms. Yuko Naito as a lecturer and

16 MVJs attended.

Here is a note from the lecturer: I teach the world history at a high school in Aichi Prefecture. My sister taught Japanese in Malaysia as a part of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) programme, which made me interested in education and textbooks in Malaysia. I talked about Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and National Schools in Malaysia at the lecture. I hope people from other countries are also interested in histories of South eastern countries. It is important to compare each country's history. The world, including Malaysia and Japan, needs to educate children to acquire new abilities and ways for critical thinking. That's what I am working on. 政治状況である。 Dr. Kaori Shinozaki is an associate professor at the University of Kitakyushu and Secretary General, Steering Committee, Japan Association for Malaysian Studies (JAMS). Malaysia is a multi-ethnic country. This gives Malaysia very unique characteristics. In “Malaysia, Truly Asia” tourism campaign video, five ethnic groups (Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sarawak and Sabah people) are featured. Georgetown and Melaka were gazetted as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2008 because of their multi-ethnic, multi-cultural histories. After WWII, political parties such as UMNO, MIC and MCA were established, ethnicity by ethnicity. They, however, overcame their differences and formed an alliance party through mutual respects. Currently in Malaysia, there are two main political forces: the ruling party, Barisan Nasional (BN) and the coalition of opposition parties. Although the party leaders are recognized as the representatives of their own ethnic groups, no one can win an election without other ethnic groups’ supports. A political party backed by ethnic majority is not necessarily a winning one.

Batch 30 Training starts, Sat 9/9/17 MV training has returned to September. We have 18 new trainees in Batch 30.

Visit to National Education Museum, Mon 18/9/17 Mona Tan & Alvin Woon organised their first Focus event by taking us to visit the National Education Museum. They are so efficient, they arrived an hour before schedule with the JMM bus from Muzium Negara. About 25 people got up early for this visit including 2 teachers who trained at Kirby College in the 1950-1960s – my mother, Choo Thye, and MV Lily Lim. The Museum is housed in a large 2 storey building inside the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris campus. It has 21 galleries covering a very comprehensive range of topics from Early Education, Child Development Education, Adult Education to Education for All! It also has galleries on Policy, Curriculum, Research, Training and important education figures. Everything

Education covered …. except English Education! Many of the museum labels/captions appeared to be translated from Malay to English using Google Translate! Overall a very good visit. It made my mother happy to see a Gallery on Kirby and Brinsford Teachers Training Colleges.

Course Completion for Batches 18 & 29 & Pot Luck, Sat 30/9/17 The MV pot luck never fails to surprise and delight us with its variety and abundance. More than 60 people attended. There was so much food, it took longer for us to squeeze a place for the food brought onto the tables provided than it took for us to remove the food from the tables to our plates and mouths! After lunch, the course completion certificates were presented to Batches 28 and 29. Congratulations to all and thank you to the dedicated trainers!

Batch 28 34 people started their training in Batch 28 on 14/2/17 and 28 people completed.

Batch 29 Yes, these are Japanese MVs and not participants of a Nyonya Convention. Aren’t they beautiful? In Batch 29 there were nearly 2 trainers to each trainee; it must have felt like back to childhood with 2 loving parents hovering.

We will celebrate again when they graduate to become full fledged MVs …. early next year. See the MV Blog for a nice long write up of the event.

Special Exhibition: Retro Fashion Icon – ends 31/10/17 Pn Hadijah conducted a tour of this special exhibition for MVs on 30/9/17.

Go see this exhibition of Saloma’s clothes before it ends. Her singing thrusted her into the spotlight but her looks, her tiny waist (21” only) and daring fashion sense made her stand out from everyone else. https://www.nst.com.my/lifestyle/flair/2017/09/281852/glimpses-legend
