Windwhistle School students added to the sense of occasion when the Lake Coleridge Power Station celebrated its 100th birthday recently. The power station was the first Government-built hydro-electric power station constructed in New Zealand and was opened by the then Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey on December 2, 1914. Windwhistle School attended the public open day this month as part of the 100 year celebrations and re-enacted school life from a century ago. The school hired costumes from Ferrymead Heritage Park in Christchurch so students and teachers could look authentically dressed for the occasion.

West Melton bus service axed by Kent Caddick

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe is calling for rural bus services to be subsidised.

The call comes after the Red Bus Company decided to axe its afternoon service to West Melton from Christchurch after just six months. The company is retaining its daily Darfield to Christchurch service.

Red Bus chief executive Paul McNoe said the decision to cut the West Melton service was a commercial one as the service, unlike the Go Bus company’s Rolleston service, does not receive an

Environment Canterbury (ECan) subsidy. “The afternoon service to West Melton, like the Darfield service, is a fully commercial one and therefore totally dependent on patronage for its viability,” Mr McNoe said.

“Unfortunately the numbers using the service do not stack up. We regularly had five or six users, mainly school children returning from school in town but it wasn’t enough to make it viable.”

Selwyn Mayor Kelvin Coe said it was disappointing the service was being cut but he understood the company’s reasoning behind the decision.

“It was really a case of use it or lose it,” Mayor Coe said.

“What we would really like to see is rural bus services attracting the same sort of subsidies as urban services.”

New cycleway under constructionWork has begun on a new Springston to Lincoln cycleway.

The 2.6 kilometre cycleway will run from Everest Way in Springston along the south side of Ellesmere Junction Road to Lincoln University where it will connect to existing pathways.

The off-road track will form part of a wider off-road cycling network connecting the main townships together in eastern Selwyn.

Springston Community Committee has led the initiative for a new cycleway which has been designed by the Selwyn District Council. The $234,000 cost of the track is being jointly funded by the council and the committee.

Committee chairperson Rupert Tipples says the new track will provide a safe and enjoyable place for cyclists and runners of all ages and abilities to exercise.

“Ellesmere Junction Road has been experiencing an increased volume of traffic since the earthquakes, especially of heavy trucks and trailers, so this new

cycleway will separate cyclists from the road to keep them safe from traffic.

“The cycleway will be a huge asset to the community and provide a great link between the two townships.”

The cycleway will add to a growing number of tracks being developed in Selwyn as part of council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy, including the Little River Rail trail which currently has an 11km long link between Hornby, Prebbleton and Lincoln.

When fully completed, the 44km long Little River Rail trail will run from Hornby to Little River on Banks Peninsula, following much of the old railway line that was last used in the 1960s.

The Springston to Lincoln cycleway is expected to be complete by the end of January.

Lake Crichton series on again by Kent Caddick

Entries for the Lake Crichton Triathlon and Duathlon summer series have opened.

This family-friendly three-race series run by the Selwyn Sports Trust is hosted on Friday evenings at Lake Crichton, a man-made lake just south of Dunsandel.

The trust’s executive officer Michael Wilson said the series was such a success earlier this year that it is now set to be a regular fixture on the Selwyn event calendar.

“The man-made lake provides the ideal setting for first time triathletes to give the sport a go,” he said.

“There are long and short courses in both the triathlon and duathlon and team entry possibilities as well. Truly an event for everyone.”

The three races have been planned for January 30, February 27 and March 6.

“They would provide a perfect lead in for competitors looking at entering the House of Travel Triathlon Festival or the Canterbury primary and intermediate schools’ events,” Mr Wilson said.

The biggest highlight for me this year has been receiving your support to continue as your local Member of Parliament for another three years.

Lowlights of this year include the passing of my dear mother and also the tragic deaths of two Work and Income staff in Ashburton.

Busy year for council by David Ward, SDC CEO

This year, 2014, has been another extremely busy year for staff and councillors alike as we continue to respond to the challenges and opportunities that come with Selwyn being the fastest growing region in New Zealand.

During the year there have been numerous highlights for council and the communities in our district, including: • Completion of a new library for Lincoln in February

• Completion of the Eastern Selwyn Sewerage Scheme. This scheme has subsequently won two national awards for engineering excellence

• Continued increase in building consents received and processed. This year we issued a total of 2,790 which is a 17% increase on the previous year

• Earthquake repairs to council infrastructure are almost completed

• Earthworks have commenced at Foster Recreation Park in Rolleston, signalling the start of

Season’s greetings one and all, and a special welcome to all the new arrivals to our district this year.

It’s been another year of extraordinary growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and opportunities that it brings.

Christmas is a time to share friendship and goodwill with our family and friends and recognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others.

We owe so much to so many when we think of all the volunteers who contribute to the wellbeing of our community. Our sports clubs, recreational, cultural activities, and Community Care services are all largely serviced by volunteers.

Our new Community Response programme (contact person Sue Jenkins 347 2977 or 021 249 4861) initiated following the earthquakes, is proving very successful and complements our emergency service and Civil Defence volunteers.

Volunteers all contribute so much to the wellbeing of our community and ensuring Selwyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play.

On behalf of the councillors and myself, I would like to thank all those who have supported us and council staff

Top award for former student by Belinda Cullen-Reid

Former Darfield High School student Karl Iremonger has received a top New Zealand science award for his research on brain functioning.

Dr Iremonger, who is a lecturer and researcher at Otago University, received the MacDiarmid Emerging Scientist Prize wor th $200,000, with $150,000 to be used for further research, from Prime Minister John Key recently.

“It ’s an amazing opportunity to win the prize, particularly due to the calibre of previous prize winners,” Dr Iremonger said.

He said this recognition will give him a chance to showcase the research he and his colleagues are doing at Otago University.

“It’s also a great opportunity to encourage other New Zealanders to take up a career in research and science.”

His prize money will go towards a New Zealand-first research laboratory at the University of Otago where Dr Iremonger and his team will apply world-leading knowledge to discover how the brain controls the body’s response to stress.

The former DHS student was a prefect and Dux at the school in 1997. He then completed a Bachelor of Physical Education and a Bachelor of Science at the University of Otago followed by a Master of Science and PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Calgary in Canada.

international conferences. Dr Iremonger has discovered a new brain cell structure and communication system, setting the stage for more targeted therapies for neurological diseases.

“When parts of our brain malfunction, the treatments are often poor or ineffective. One of the reasons could be that our thinking about how brain cells function is overly simplistic. My research shows that some brain cells function very differently to what was previously thought.

“It provides a real foundation for other research and opens up possibilities that other neuroscientists may not have thought of,” he said.

However, ECan’s public transport manager David Stenhouse, said rural centres can access the same funding as urban centres.

“The rural community needs to identify the need for the service together with the likely usage and advise Environment Canterbury either through letter or by way of submission to the Long Term Plan.

“Environment Canterbury will then investigate the service and consult with the community over options available.

“This consultation will include an estimate of the targeted rate which would be applied to residents as a result of the introduction of a service. The likely fare level would also be included in the consultation material.

Mr Stenhouse said if the service was assessed as viable and the community was willing to fund it then a report would go to the ECan Commissioners for approval.

Paul McNoe said that while the current afternoon West Melton service has been shut down they are not closing the book on another service in the future.

“It will really come down to public demand as was the case in us establishing our Oxford service.

“The local community came to us and said we need a bus service to Oxford. So we put it on and in that case it has been well supported and like the Darfield service remains an important part of our business.”

The Record understands to make the West Melton afternoon bus service viable patronage would have to be at least double the current numbers.

As part of our look back into Selwyn residents making the news this year the staff at The Record would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

July was a big month for Selwyn’s only locally owned community newspaper The Record. In July the paper celebrated its first birthday in its current format after the long-serving Malvern Record received a makeover with full colour in tabloid format. In the same month The Record was recognised as the most improved community newspaper in the country taking out the prestigious Frank Veale Memorial Award at the New Zealand Community Newspaper Association’s annual awards in Wellington. NZCNA awards judge Sue McPherson said while The Record’s path to a traditional community paper was not unique the paper had achieved a remarkable metamorphosis this year. In September and October West Melton celebrated its 150th birthday in style with a Time After Time historic field day in late September followed by a weekend of celebratory activity in October with a black tie ball and other social and sporting events. The West Melton Celebration Committee spent months preparing the highly successful event with special tributes being paid to organisers Nicky Parker and Andrew Sharpe for going above and beyond to ensure the events were well patronised. Next year it will be Rolleston’s turn to mark its 150 year milestone. The Record’s pick for young achiever of the year was 17-year-old Darfield High School student Tim Logan who is turning heads in both the world of conservation and the agricultural sector. Tim’s outstanding year was capped just this month when he received the Prime Minister’s Future Scientist Prize worth $50,000 for his studies into native plants in Canterbury. Tim has spent the last couple of years walking the Waimakariri River floodplain researching the effects of stock grazing on low native vegetation such as New Zealand species of mosses and lichen. This award comes on the heels of other accolades for Tim including Best in Fair at the 2014 Canterbury Westland Secondary School Science and Technology Fair and the New Zealand Young Plant Conservationist Award.

Keeping children safe this summerPlunket is encouraging Selwyn families to keep an eye on their children while they make the most of the summer holidays.

Plunket National Advisor on Child Safety, Sue Campbell said summer is all about fun, family, friends and hopefully some sunshine.

“But it’s also a time when sunburn and accidents are all too common.

“Children are often travelling with different family or friends so it’s important their car seats travel with them. If that’s not possible, Plunket can help with short-term hire but this needs to be planned well ahead as there is high demand on this service.”

Ms Campbell is also urging Selwyn parents to keep an eye on children around water. “It’s also really important to keep children within arm’s reach

whenever you are at the beach, down by the river or near a pool — if you can’t grab them you can’t save them.

“At big family gatherings, people often put someone in charge of watching children swimming or playing in the water and this is a really good idea.

“While you’re outside, remember the slip, slap, slop and wrap message. Slip into some shade and some cool cover-up clothes, slop on the sunscreen, slap on a hat and don’t forget the sunglasses. “

However, she said burns aren’t just caused by the sun.

“Watch out for the children while you are barbecuing or enjoying a bonfire. If you have lots of visitors staying, it also

Plunket is also concerned by a recent spate in fatal driveway accidents.

Safekids Aotearoa figures show that each year about five children die as a result of driveway accidents and a further 26 need hospital care.

“Always know where the kids are before getting in the car. Supervise children around vehicles, and check for children before driving off,” Ms Campbell said.

According to the New Zealand Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee’s 2013 report the most common cause of accidental death among children under five years old involves motor vehicles while the next most common is drowning and suffocation.

Sun and warmth tops housing listAn overwhelming nine out of ten New Zealanders rate good sun and insulation as ‘important’ or ‘very important’ when choosing a new home, far outweighing other factors.

The results from the annual Homestar/realestate.co.nz survey show a rising preference for high levels of insulation and orientation for sun which outstripped industry expectations.

Paul McKenzie, national marketing manager at realestate.co.nz said the increased preference was surprising.

“We knew from the last couple of years that most Kiwis rate good sun and insulation as important but a leap of 8% is pretty substantial,” he said.

“This shows the real-life performance of a home, rather than cosmetic features, is increasingly crucial. Home sellers wanting to command a top price would be well advised to look at issues such as insulation before they put their house on the market,” Mr McKenzie said.

Now run over three years, the annual survey gives a valuable insight into not only what New Zealanders rate as important, but how preferences are changing over time.

Last year orientation for sun was rated as important by 86% — this year it’s risen to 91%. A high level of insulation was important to 82% last year, but is now ranked as important by 90%.

Chief executive of the New Zealand Green Building Council, Alex Cutler, welcomed the growing awareness of performance and quality over superficial factors.

“A home that’s designed and built for health and efficiency has a positive impact for families — bringing lower household costs and better quality of life.

“These figures show this isn’t a passing trend. New Zealanders increasingly understand that homes should be built to capture free warmth from the sun and be well-insulated and ventilated to be healthy all year round.”

She said public information campaigns on home energy efficiency and insulation were likely to have had an impact on attitudes.

“A home designed for warmth and efficiency will be cheaper to run and bring health benefits over the long term — so economically it makes much more sense. New Zealanders have clearly cottoned on to this.”

Drive to survive on holiday by Ngaire Tinning, Selwyn road safety co-ordinator

Like the rest of New Zealand, roads in Selwyn will become increasingly busy over the next few weeks with higher traffic volumes and a variety of different vehicles.

As Christmas holiday season approaches many of these drivers will be heading off on holiday or having at least a few days away to catch up with family and friends.

When travelling it is always important to allow enough time to get to your destination, drive with patience and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

Holiday traffic will also include many extra campervans and other vehicles towing boats, caravans or trailers. If you are towing, the maximum speed limit on the open road is 90km/h. Keep left and pull over when it is safe to let other vehicles pass.

Keeping a safe following distance between yourself and the vehicle in front will allow you enough distance should the vehicle in front of you stop suddenly.

Holiday driving often means spending several hours behind the wheel. Long journeys can be tiring, and tiredness can be fatal if you don’t recognise the signs.

Get plenty of sleep before your journey, and try to drive at times of the day when you are normally awake. Plan for rest breaks from driving every couple of hours. Get out of your vehicle and even take a short walk to improve alertness.

If you do start feeling tired, take a short break, or if possible, share the driving. Use the air conditioning if your vehicle has it as cool air will keep you more alert and will help avoid frustration and stress which are major causes of fatigue.

The safety belt is one of the top safety features in your vehicle and only takes a split second to buckle up. No-one wants to be involved in a crash but that small step increases your chance of avoiding serious injury by up to 40% if the unfortunate occurs.

It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure that all passengers under 15 years are restrained either in a seat belt or an approved child seat suitable to their size and weight.

Excessive speed, or inappropriate speed for the conditions, is regrettably all too common at this time of year. With some travellers wanting to get to their destination as soon as possible, frustration with slower or heavy traffic can sometimes cause drivers to

make unsafe decisions, particularly when overtaking or at pulling out at intersections.

It is encouraging to know our Police will be out on our roads to strictly enforce the speed limits when needed and encourage drivers to travel at a safe speed that suits the road conditions and the environment.

Their efforts, combined with the support from all road users will result in a safer journey for everyone.

My Italian Kitchen: Orange rice cake

When we think of Italian rice we think of creamy savoury risotto cooked with the special arborio rice, but Italian’s enjoy rice in sweet dishes as well.

One simple but delicious sweet orange rice cake called Torta di riso al profumo d’ arancio is typical of cakes made with rice in the northern regions of Italy where rice is plentiful.

This rice cake is not only delicious but it is also nutritious and quite acceptable

to give to children as an after school snack or even have for breakfast.

This recipe appeared on one of my all-time favourite cooking shows Two Greedy Italians where Italian chefs Antonio Carluccio and Gennaro Contaldo, now living abroad, return to their homeland together and rediscover the beauty of its food, the people and the culture.

For in Italy all are very much intertwined.

It is well known that Italians love their pasta, but even though pasta is faster, rice is also nice.

Ingredients:1.7 litres of milk — 1 vanilla pod½ a lemon rind peeled200 grams of sugar300 grams of arborio rice5 large eggs, separated50 ml orange liqueur40 grams of raisins1 orange, zested, plus extra zest,

Recipe Orange rice cake (torta di riso al profumo d ’arancio)

in the stiffened egg whites, followed by the raisins and orange zest. Do not over mix. Pour in the prepared tin and bake in the oven for 1 hour.

Serve warm or cold, sprinkled with a little extra orange zest to finish.

Viva il cuoco che ci delizia con leccornie e allegria, meaning ‘Bless the cook who serves love and laughter’.

Instructions:Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease

and line a 24 cm cake tin which has a loose-bottomed. Use greaseproof paper.

Place the milk, vanilla pod, pieces of lemon rind and sugar in a large saucepan and bring them to the boil.

Add the rice and simmer over a medium to low heat for about 20–25 minutes, until the rice is al dente and

has absorbed the milk but still has a creamy consistency.

Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Once cool do not forget to discard the lemon rind.

In a bowl, whisk the egg yolks and liqueur until creamy.

In a different bowl, whisk the egg whites until stiff. Add the egg yolk mixture to the cooled rice, and then fold

Ford’s global reach and worldwide automotive plans continue apace, with the venerable US automaker watching the Focus dominate the Chinese new car market, the EcoSport sell out in India and the good ol’ F-150 remain evergreen in North America.

And while the planet-spanning master plan of the boys from Dearborn may mean the end of the Falcon badge downunder, there are surprises in the works from Ford to rival the announcement of Mustangs on Kiwi forecourts in the not-too-distant future.

So until the throaty V8 rumble of the sixth-gen ‘Stang is heard on Waikato roads, please consider exhibit A — a three-door hatch so hot that it’s positively incandescent. Especially in the fire-engine red trim we got to see up close and in the flesh. This is the 2014 Fiesta ST, a car which was marketed

with its own brand of hot sauce on its arrival to these shores, and which throws its diminutive weight around with such precision and verve that older petrolheads can be heard whispering the words ‘Escort Cosworth’ in hushed tones after a quick spin. Not that the mad, fun little Fiesta ST shares a lot in common with the raucous, rally-bred ‘Esky’ — this is a more sophisticated beast. But consider. The roadgoing 1992 Escort Cosworth weighed 1,320 kilograms and packed 168 kilowatts of power. The ST, on the other hand, is packed with far more luxury, safety

and technical gadgetry, yet only weighs 1,163kg. Under the hood, a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine kicks out 134kW — but also 240Nm of torque.

That means a lighter, more nimble vehicle than any other small Ford of recent memory — but also the firepower to outgun many other top euro-hatches.

No wonder, when the ST was engineered in Cologne, Germany, and fettled in Belgium before being unleashed locally. You may think that the comparison between the now-legendary Cosworth and a variant of the Fiesta is heretical, but that sense of slightly unhinged yet fully planted fun is right

there, making this a worthy successor to the whale-tailed road rocket of yore.

A proper six speed manual transmission rewards driving acumen with satisfying feedback, making this a cut above the average superheated shopping trolley hatch.

Those lamenting the end of the Falcon legend should take heart. There are still dedicated petrolheads calling the shots at Ford — enough to get this smile-inducing little firecracker onto the forecourts here in New Zealand. It’s evidence enough to make those who think small cars can’t be fun to think again.
