We have all been moved by music. Isn’t itamazinghow, in justashort time musiccan influence, every cell inourbodiesandtrigger suchanamazingarrayof emotions, from joy and sadness toexcitement and peace? But music is about much more than expressing our feelings.

For instance, it is well known how music: affects our respiration heartbeat and blood pressure

helps to release muscular tension, aids relaxation and regulates stress

improves physical co-ordination and strengthens memory and cognitive skills

promotes social well-being and unlocks communication where language fails.

Therapeutic musicing can even lead clients to finding new forms of and the desire toLIFEcreate again, when living is impeded by illness, disabilities, and learning challenges.

Also consider how musical imagery pervades our lives so that we speak of:

being of ideas that‘ and & ’sound mind’ ‘sound health’ ‘resonate with us

things being & being‘harmonious’ or ‘discordant’ ‘in/out of tune’

communicating on & striking a‘the same wavelength’ ‘sympathetic chord’.

“Think of the body as an orchestra. When we’re in good health the instruments in our orchestra play in tune. When we’re sick, one instrument plays flat, another sharp.” (Don Campbell)

On this course you’ll have the opportunity to explore MUSICAL PRINCIPLES IN PHYSIOLOGY

& T H B S SHE UMAN EING AS A YMPHONY OF OUNDi.e. how the archetypes of rhythm, melody, harmony and timbre

have fundamental connections with our body, mind, soul and spirit.

The Elements of Musicand their Therapeutic Applications

This course therefore with you how each ‘element of music’will explore addresses andnourishes different parts of our being so that we can bring our whole being into harmony.

Each interval and scale contains archetypal therapeutic qualities. We will thereforeMELODYexplore ifferent intervals are linked to our physiology, e.g. he 5th with our lungs ,how d ( t )and h different modes/scales (with their unique balance of light and dark and innerowand outer aspects) effect changes of mood, and much more.help

Everyone knows that rhythm can excite or calm, aid people with motor co-RHYTHMordination and help where illness has caused a disruption of rhythm (e.g. in cerebralpalsy . We will therefore explore how different forms of consciousness are embodied)

in each musical metre the nature of free time vs pulsed rhythms, and much more.

HARMONY The harmonic implications of dissonance and consonance, suspensionand resolution are connected to questions of tension and release in our lives. Thus we’llexplore how drones provide clients with grounding and centering.themes such as can

This study of the therapeuticproperties ofmusic will also include further ‘elements’ suchas:

Investigate the Deep Archetypal Structuresthat underlie Sound and Music,

and explore this knowledge in connection with the human being.

A lot of music therapy today is based on the limits of culturally defined music. To addressthis the course will explore archetypal primal music processes in therapeutic music making.

This will include modules that will investigate:

1) The Inner Life of ToneThe course will shed new light on the deep truths connected to VIBRATION, HARMONICSand , including how vibration transforms and brings order to matter.RESONANCE

2) The Use of Archetypal Instrumentse.g. the tam-tam, overtone whirlies, gongs in pure tuning and nature’s instruments

3) The - Universals and ArchetypesHealing VoiceDiscover the intrinsic therapeutic properties of each vowel and consonant and how tobring the archetypal tone stream in the etheric body into sounding. Plus explore songs thatcontain therapeutic gifts (e.g. ones that offer trust, confidence and courage, etc.).

4) The Caduceus in MusicThe ancient Greeks referred to the archetypal elements of music as:

RHYTHMOS - the moveable Dionysian aspect that works with our Subtle / Energetic body

TONOS - the form holding structure of Apollo that works with our Cognitive Forces, and

HARMONIA - namely, the musical dialogue that sounds between these two poles of headand limbs through working with the heart and breathing forces of the human being.

5) The Human Organisation in SpaceDiscover howmusic works with thebalance / imbalance ofourhuman organisation in space

from our heights to our depths from within to without

from left to right (i.e. the harmony of the hemispheres)

and from front (our future) and back (our past).

6) In Tune or Out of Tune - Natural vs Man-made TuningExplore the use of ‘Natural Tuning’ - derived from the ‘Harmonic Series’ - as opposed to theman-made Western Tempered Tuning where each interval is slightly out of tune with‘ ’nature’s laws. (N.B. We’ll use beautiful bronze gongs to do this.)

7) The Four Elements in Music (Earth, Air, Fire & Water)

& the Four Temperaments (Choleric, Phlegmatic, Sanguine & Melancholic)

Page 5: The T rapeutiche o l Y e Properties of Music · ii) how the ‘ ’ELEMENTS OF MUSIC relate to our mind-body-soul-&-spirit & iii) PRACTICAL GUIDE SPECIAL NEEDSLINES for working with

Social Therapeutic Musicing in the Space Between

There will be a deep exploration of

the I YOU" relationship in music.

In particular we’ll explore how music can:i) offer a place in which to manage and explore the separation of me and not me through

providing a new experience of self to other relationships.

ii) transform the social isolation from the world many people feel, caused by physicalhandicap, learning difficulties, or emotional pain.

Thus social therapeutic music making helps groups and clients to develop an experience oftrust, cohesion, belonging and being listened to.

The course will introduce you totherefore :

i) new ideas for Improvising/Creating Music in the Space Between I and You

ii) how Tonalis’ social therapeutic instruments call participants into musical meetingswhere the players can reach out, contact each other and create networks of relationships.

iii) musical investigations into issues such as:

self-preoccupation and boundaries vs having no sense of self

individuality and belonging opening and closing

inside and outside giving and receiving

The Therapeutic Properties of Musical Instruments

Each of us is like a different musical instrumentand each instrument can help us:

i) create a different relationship with the world around usand ii) bring our inner life out into the world.

At the heart of this work will bethe stunning newly designed therapeutic acoustic instruments Tonalis uses

that have been specifically designed to be technically accessibleto special needs groups and non-specialists.

These new instruments include new forms of:

Percussion Gongs Lyres Harps Flutes Bowed Instruments and a huge Lap Xylophone that can be shared between players.

This course will therefore explore the way from the elementaleach instrument’s material has a unique therapeutic voice,

materialsofstone,skin,wood,airanddifferentmetals, toplucked,strokedandbowedstrings

how different instruments address and nourish different parts of the human organism

how a client’s own subjective instrument (namely their self) flows into and meets theobjective intrinsic nature of each instrument.

Creating Frameworks for Therapeutic ImprovisationsOne of the key therapeutic processes - which will put all the above into practice for you - willbe to learn how to create improvisatory musical frameworks that

RELATE TO EACH CLIENT S SPECIFIC NEEDS’ / GROUP’S .

Thus we will explore how frameworks based on particular scales, intervals, metres, harmoniesandmusical styles, etc. cancreate special bridgesof transformationandhealing

Diagnosis - The Study of Music is the Study of ManThe training will provide you with the foundation stones and keys that are necessary forcreating appropriate diagnosis in therapeutic musicing. These are based upon asking:

how does the client express themselves musically?as their musical expression mirrors the life processes going on inside them

how can I correlate the ‘elements of music’ with each individual human being? how the client(s) is uniquely connected to elements such as: time, form vs freedom,

consonance vs dissonance, different musical idioms and specific musical instruments

what elements of music are strongest / weakest in the client(s)?

which aspects of the four-fold nature of the human being are strongest / weakest?

With this knowledge the therapist can then:I) provide the most appropriate conditions for a client to experience themselves in a

different way, so music can heal and transform them, not only express them.

ii) find the ‘objective’ musical elements that make the most special and appropriateconnection to the individual ‘subjective’ situation of the client
