Programme ObjectivesGraduates of the Doctor of Nursing Programme will be able to:l use analytic methods to critically evaluate existing evidence in order to select the best

evidence for clinical practice and/or nursing education;l design and implement programmes to evaluate outcomes of clinical practice and/or nursing

education;l design, direct, and evaluate innovations to enhance healthcare and/or educational outcomes;l translate research into practice to improve healthcare outcomes;l integrate practice, education and research to better meet society’s health needs;l demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in practice or academic environments;l disseminate findings from evidence-based practice to improve clinical practice and/or

nursing education;l reflect on their own practice so that they can construct, articulate and evaluate their own

philosophy, self-reflection and professional ethics in health care, nursing practice, andresearch; and

l provide leadership in clinical practice and nursing education.

� The DNurs programme is a professional doctorate that involves bothcourse work and a substantial research project.

� The study time normally extends over four years on a part-time basis, orthree years on a full-time basis.– The maximum period of study is six years for part-time students, or four

Core CourseNURS6001 Scientific Progress in NursingThrough directed readings and seminar discussions related to selectedtopical areas, students develop knowledge of the historical evolution ofnursing research and the current state of science in nursing and otherselected areas of research interest. Scientific breakthroughs in nursingbetween 1960-1999 are identified and characterized as to trans-disciplinarychange in thinking.

Core CourseNURS6002 Advanced Quantitative Research Designs and MethodsThis course offers advanced understanding of methods of testing theeffectiveness of nursing interventions. Research ethics, including scientificintegrity, protection of human subjects, and animal welfare, are integratedthroughout the course. Students examine experimental and quasi-experimental research designs in terms of their validity for assessingeffectiveness of nursing interventions in specific situations.

Core CourseNURS6003 Naturalistic and Interpretive Approaches to Nursing ResearchThis course is designed to introduce a sample of naturalistic andinterpretive approaches to the study of phenomena of interest to nursingscience. The epistemological principles that underlie interpretive andnaturalistic research will be covered as well as techniques for data collection,data analysis, and control of systematic bias.

Core CourseNURS6004 Health Policy for Advocacy in Health CareThis course introduces students to health policy issues in the clinicalpractice, research and teaching environments as well as to translate nursingpractice issues to policy issues. The focus is on providing students with theknowledge and skills to identify new health policy issues, critically analyselaws, regulations and policies at institutional and higher levels, and utiliseresearch findings to examine policy questions.

Track Course -Educational Leadership Track

NURS6005 Introduction to Clinical and Classroom Teaching in NursingThis course introduces graduate students to the role of nurse educator in theclassroom and clinical teaching setting. The course reviews applicableteaching learning principles and presents a variety of classic andcontemporary teaching methods and strategies for instruction and studentevaluation. Challenges for nurse educators related to student diversity,active learning, use of technology, and student evaluation are explored.

NURS6006 Curriculum Planning and DevelopmentThe course is designed to help students understand and enact the principlesof curriculum design, development and evaluation, as they apply to thecontext of nursing education. Curriculum issues encountered in the broadereducational contexts are also reviewed and their relevance to the educationof nurses is critically examined.

NURS6007 Assessment and EvaluationThis course aims to provide an advanced understanding of the principlesand practices of assessment and evaluation in relation to general andnursing education. The effects of assessment on student learning and theimplications of evaluation for curriculum development are also examined.

NURS6008 Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Role AcquisitionThis APN course is an introduction to the history, competencies, and roles ofadvanced practice nursing with an emphasis on role acquisition. Trendsand issues which shape advanced practice nursing are also addressed. Inaddition, students are given the opportunity to develop a team project toexperience and evaluate the process of collaboration.

NURS6009 Health Behavior and Health Promotion ResearchThis course focuses on developing theory-based and evidence-basedknowledge for health promotion and health behavior. Through critique oftheory and research, applications for health promotion and health behaviorinterventions will be explored. Multidisciplinary perspectives and issuesrelated to health and health behavior will be examined for the advancementof health promotion through nursing and public health practice.

NURS6010 Concepts and Methods in Health Services ResearchThis course builds on knowledge that is essential to conducting servicesresearch including social, economic, ethical, and political issues thatinfluence health policy decisions. Students develop conceptual andmethodological competencies related to research on the organization,financing, and delivery of nursing services in a variety of health caresettings. Empirical investigations of the impact of nursing interventions onoutcomes of care such as quality and cost are provided.

Research Ethics CourseGRSC6031 Research Ethics for Graduate StudentsIn this course, students will learn essential vocabulary, principles, andpractices conducive to the promotion of research integrity in general and intheir relevant disciplines. Students will encounter terminology, texts, andtenets that relate to good conduct in teaching and research professions. Thecourse covers the international standards associated with the conduct ofhuman-subject research. Topics that will also be covered include issues ofauthorship, mentorship and professional ethics for academics in theuniversity. To complete the course, students must pass the web-basedlearning modules and an examination, and attend at least 2/3 of the classes.

Scholarships/SponsorshipInternational Conference Participation SponsorshipOpportunities are available for students to have educational exchange in renowned internationaluniversities, and financial support will be provided to encourage students to present atinternational conferences.

Dr Serena Yang Scholarship for DNurs ProgrammeTwo prizes shall be awarded to newly enrolled candidates who hold a bachelor's degree with 1stclass honors or equivalent outstanding academic achievement; and whose research proposal (2-3pages) has demonstrated scientific rigor. The value of each of the prizes shall be HK$30,000.

Scholarship for Doctor of Nursing (Full-time)*Two scholarships , each of the value up to 50% of the tuition fee, shall be awarded each year tonon-local students admitted to the Doctor of Nursing Programme on the basis of academic meritand financial need. Students may be invited to a selection interview if necessary.

Admission RequirementsTo be eligible for admission to the Programme leading to the degree of Doctorof Nursing, applicants must:� comply with the General Regulations;� hold a master's degree in nursing or equivalent disciplines from this

University, or a comparable university accepted for this purpose;� currently hold a Registered Nurse license;� have English proficiency as specified by the University's admission

requirements (https://aal.hku.hk/tpg/english-language-requirements); and� satisfy the application evaluators with

– (i) a statement of overall career goals and specific research interests; and– (ii) an oral justification of their suitability for doctoral education.
