Hoops for Hope Cancer Awareness Game

The Varsity Basketball team and Sophomore AVID class hosted a cancer awareness game on Thursday night, February 9th. Our students and staff, along with the Country Day basketball team, worked hard to make this event a great success. AVID students sold t-shirts in the lunchroom, raffle tickets at the game, donated money and gift cards and volunteered their time to make signs and help promote the game. Members of the basketball team played the game in honor of

someone who is battling cancer or is a survivor, or in memory of someone who has lost their battle to cancer. After the game, the jerseys were presented to the sponsors to take home as a keepsake. The proceeds from the Hoops for Hope event will go to a local non-profit organization called The Believe Foundation. They focus on helping families, right here in our community, that are suffering the hardships that come along with a cancer diagnosis. The event was a great success

Skills USA- Automotive skills regional competition

This weekend four auto students from Stevenson Auto competed in the regional Skills USA competition at the Automotive Service Department of Macomb Community College. The students combined to compete in two categories Brake Service and Electrical Systems Service.

Senior Tyler King competed in Brakes and scored a third place finish, just points behind the second place finisher. Tyler will represent Utica Schools as an alternate for the State Competition in April. Tyler is a great example to his fellow auto students. He has always displayed strong character, willingness to learn new skills, and Mr. Hoover believes his teachers would agree he is a respectful diligent worker.

Other competitors from our schools were Jacob Dixon (brakes), Skye Mecum (Electrical), Niall Mullins (Electrical). These were the only competitors representing Utica schools in Auto Service among 90+ students from the Macomb Region. This region is the largest competition in auto service. Nearly 25 students compete for each skill area making it even more challenging to place.

Social Studies Olympiad

Coach Frischman is excited to announce the selection of Senior Martin Noci and Junior Sarena Danou as Co-Captains of our 2017 Stevenson Social Studies Olympiad Team! Martin has been involved with SSO since elementary school and has been a leading member of our award-winning Quiz Bowl Teams during his years at Stevenson. Sarena is new to SSO, but has already actively recruited many new members for our 2017 team and demonstrated tremendous enthusiasm

about her participation in multiple events. Congratulations to them both!

There will be a brief meeting next Thursday, February 16 for all SSO members and anyone else still interested in joining the team. Students that have not already emailed Coach Frischman with the

Page 6 event(s) they wish to participate in, should do so ASAP. Spots are filling up fast thanks to the excitement about our team this year!

Finally, a reminder that the hard and fast deadline for getting your off-site event entries to Coach this year is Wednesday, March 15th.

School to Work Program (Co-op)

The School to Work Program is available to all 11th and 12th grade students. Eligible students must be willing/able to leave school after fifth hour and not have obligations that would prevent them from going to work every day (sports, band, and club activity). Eligible students will have reliable transportation, the ability to work independently, and able to accept adult responsibilities including constructive criticism and direction. Students in the School to Work Program earn an income while gaining experience in an adult job.

Areas that paid internships are available in include but are not limited to business offices, financial offices, medical environments including Beaumont Hospital, Chiropractic offices, dental offices, medical offices of all types, and PT offices. CAD engineering jobs, auto field jobs, machining jobs, welding jobs, Retirement home positions, law offices (limited) , and township offices in various departments. These are just a few of the opportunities we have provided our students. It is our goal to try to find each intern a career type job to experience although any students who are currently working and receiving a payroll check (no cash payments for services can be allowed) are eligible for the program if they meet the full qualifications of the program. In some cases, the students want to retain their current “typical teenage job”, while enrolled in Co-Op which they can do as long as they meet the criteria of the program as mandated by the state of Michigan.

F.A.Q. Regarding School to Work Program (Co-op)

WHO IS THE PROGRAM DESIGNED TO SERVE? Students who are interested in experiencing a professional real world job in their career interest prior to leaving high school.

WHO IS ELGIABLE TO BE IN THE PROGRAM? (1) Students MUST have their own transportation, as it is your responsibility to get yourself to and from work each day without the need to rely on anyone else. (2)Students who have a good attendance record (including tardy free attendance) and (3) a strong GPA of at least 2.5 overall average. Special consideration of these conditions are on a per student bases.

WHO GETS THE JOBS FOR STUDENTS AND HOW DOES THAT WORK? You interview with Mrs. Adams (the program Coordinator) and determine what area of interest you are looking to have a career experience in if you are accepted into the program. Based on your personal data, Mrs. Adams will let you know if she can assist you in finding a job and what classes you must take, or have had previously, to be prepared for the specific job opportunities. It is the student’s responsibility to get a job with Ms. Adams assistance.

Page 7: This Week’s Announcements Back to Main · PDF fileDental Terminology: Rabeeh Rajab 3rd. Pathophysiology Knowledge Test: ... has been a leading member of our award-winning Quiz Bowl

Page 7 WHEN SHOULD YOU LOOK INTO THE PROGRAM AND THE OPEN JOBS? I suggest you start talking to Mrs. Adams about next year right registration starts. Pick up an application in the CO-OP office and return it to her office, which is located in the main office. She will give you the application for the program, a template for the resume, and any other information she has on your specific opportunities. Then a follow up should take place starting in May when interviews begin to take place. She will prepare you for all interviews.

WHY SHOULD I WANT TO BE A SCHOOL TO WORK INTERN? 1) You will be able to get a firsthand look at your potential career pathway prior to leaving high school. 2) You will meet career professionals who can help network with you as you advance and achieve your goals. 3) You will have a professional experience to add to your resume, which can often open doors to future employment opportunities. 4) You can often secure a good job to keep while assisting with college expenses after graduation. 5)

Depending on your career pathway, it often helps step up your chances of getting into a college program. 6) You can earn an income to help advance towards your own independence financially. 7) Co-Op jobs often pay more than a “typical teenage” job will pay. 8) You leave an hour earlier from school so you are able to have more evening time to do other things.

IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, YOU CAN EMAIL: [email protected] or sign up to see her on the Co-Op office door, she will call you down when she is available to speak to you about the program.

TEACHER TALK Back to Main Menu

Announcements from Past Editions of the Titan Voice You May Have Missed

Parking Lot Safety

We are asking for cooperation from parents on a number of items regarding the parking lot at the beginning and end of the day.

Please talk to your students about not running through the parking lot. It is an issue of safety. Drivers may not always see them and be able to stop in time.

In the morning, it would increase safety in the student lot if parents who are dropping off students used the southern entrance loop instead of entering the student lot.

In the afternoon, we are asking parents to avoid entering the student lot from 2:11 to 2:21 to facilitate the safe exit of students. Parents who arrive during this time should use the southern entrance loop to pick up students.
