    With steady limbs, with bodies, praising,

    Let us enjoy the life allotted by the gods.

    May ndra, of wide renown, grant us wellbeing;

    May &rihaspati grant us wellbeing.

    () *ow, in this sphere +of nes'ien'e, the Lord +-adasi%a, assuming the guises of"rajapati, ishnu and /udra, 'omes to be styled Goddess #ripura. &y 0is prime%al"ower are fashioned the three abodes 1 the earth, the atmosphere and thehea%ens, or the hea%ens, the earth and the nether world. n the form of hrim,identi'al with the maya of 0ara, the di%ine 0rille$ha permeates, with 0er terriblemight, the terminus of the three pea$s +abo%e the jun'tion of the two eyebrows,the seat of e2uilibrium of the three gunas, and the region where the world ofobje'ts is dissol%ed. #his selfsame di%inity is 'alled #ripura.

    9) #he supreme so%ereign, the goddess of the three 'ities, is the embodiment ofthe three edas and the supreme $nowledge 'onsisting of the (: letters. #he firstfour di%isions elu'idate &rahman; the se'ond pertains to -a$ti or "ower; and thethird to -i%a, the Good.

    (() arenyam means the best, the adorable, the imperishable, worthy ofobeisan'e. -o %arenyam is understood as the letter e. Whoso $nows this +be'omesthe best.

    (3) &hargo de%asya dhimahi 1 this we shall eBpound) >ha denotes bearing. &ythought is the supreme Lord borne. &harga is the shining one that dwells in the'entre; the imperishable fourth +letter, the immediate 6ourth, the all, the inmost ofe%erything. #he fourth letter i is in the middle of words. #hus is the form of bhargaeBpounded, they say. -o the letter i is understood as the e2ui%alent of bhargode%asya dhi.

    (5) #he eBposition of mahi. #he letter in whi'h are present greatness, inertnessand hardness is mahi. #he letter la is the supreme abode. #he letter la denotes thesphere, predominantly hard, 'omprising the seas, the mountains, the se%en islandsand the forests, and ha%ing a resplendent form. &y mahi the goddess Carth isdenoted.

    (8) >hiyo yo nah pra'hodayat. May the supreme -elf, the prime%al,trans'endental -adasi%a, inspire +our thoughts, +our luminous -elf, with thesteadfast letter la towards the trans'endental, undifferentiated /eal, whi'h isbeyond the sphere of desire for 'ontemplation. Without %erbal utteran'e, holdingthis in mind only, should one meditate.

    (9) "aro rajase sa%adom. 6inally that +whi'h is other than the -elf be'omes thesupreme Light, pure 'ons'iousness, the di%inity dwelling in the heart, whose mar$

    is 'ons'iousness, and whi'h is +the same as hrim, whose abode is the heart. -o thegroup of fi%e letters, agbha%a$uta, whi'h gi%es rise to the fi%e elements and'onsists of fi%e se'tions, is 'larified. Who $nows thus +reaps the results.

    -a$ti is all that is born;

    -un and moon united are

    0amsa 1 &rahman attributeless.

    >esire@s obje'ts, wells up desire;

    Lord of desires, the 'hoi'e Light

    s des'ribed as the letter $a.

    3:) #at -a%itur %arenyam &hargo de%ah. #he imperishable mil$ that wipes out theeffe'ts of a'ts and their agents is worth imbibing. #hat imperishable +mil$ is wonthrough the union of the supreme -elf and the indi%idual self. #hat is the 'lear thirdsyllable ha. t is indeed -adasi%a, the flawless, the shining di%inity. #he last syllableis thus eBpounded as the supreme abode.

    3() >hi denotes upholding; the upholding of inert matter is asso'iated with mahi,denoted by the syllable, la. #he sense of la 'oming after ha denoting -i%a is 'learly

    +&rahman. #he last syllable is the -upreme -pirit. May it inspire our thoughts !

    33) "aro rajase sa%adom) #his group is the abode of Dama$ala +i.e. the agbha%agroup. 0e who treads the siB paths +su'h as the path of letters rea'hes the seat ofishnu. Whoso $nows thus +rea'hes that seat. *othing besides this +eBists, saysthe Lord.

    35) After this the other, the third group, -a$ti$uta, attains +a''ord with theGayatri of thirtytwo syllables.

    38) #at -a%itur %arenyam. 6rom the -elf +'omes the s$y; from the s$y the air stirsforth. What 'omes into being in dependen'e on t is adorable. &efitting -a%itur isthe 'oming together of the indi%idual self and the -upreme -elf. #he syllabledenoting the indi%idual self, +sa, 'learly attains the form of the luminous "ower.

    39) &hargo de%asya dhi. With these words is 'ounted the syllable +$a denoting-i%a who 'ontains +all. With mahi, et'. +la is in a''ord. With the desirable, lo%ely,%isible remainder +i.e. dhiyo yo nah, et'., the desirable, lo%ely +hrille$ha is ina''ord. #hus is -a$ti$uta elu'idated.

    3ur%asas, the wrathful sage, meditated.

    3) #he agbha%a group of the pre%ious in'antation is des'ribed as pertaining toManu, 4handra and Dubera.

    5:) After Madana +or $lim 'omes the auspi'ious agbha%a; neBt is the Dama$ala+$a, et'.; neBt is the -a$ti group, sa, et'. #his grouping, in this order, was adoredby Manu, and must be 'ontemplated in the fourth abode +the is%a state.

    5() +6irst that whi'h is styled -i%a and -a$ti +namely ha, et'.; then agbha%a;again the -i%a and -a$ti group; and the third +sa, et'. 1 this in'antation, adored of4handra, is to be 'ontemplated in the fifth abode +the #aijasa state.

    53) #he in'antation of -i%a, et'., added to that of 4handra is the in'antation ofDubera; it must be 'ontemplated in the siBth abode +the "rajna state. Whoso$nows this +attains Dubera@s wealth.

    55) Lea%ing out the fourth %owel i, and pla'ing the sun and the moon +representedby ha and sa in the beginning of all +groups, there results the %idya +in'antationpromoting power o%er desires; it is named after Agastya and must be meditated onin the se%enth abode +the iraj state.

    58) n the in'antation +of Agastya gi%en abo%e, set in twofold manner, ha ha,representing the in'antations beginning with Dama and Madana; then sa, the seed

    syllable of -a$ti, and $a, the beginning of agbha%a. Of sa and $a, let the %owels beshortened into halfsyllables. #his is the in'antation of *andi +to be 'ontemplatesin the eighth abode +the -utratman state.

    59) #he agbha%a group; the in'antation of Agastya, 'onsisting of words and

    meanings styled Dama$ala; +then all the power of Maya +the -a$ti group 1 +these,integrated, were adored by the sun and so this is 'alled the in'antation of"rabha$ara. +t must be meditated on in the mind abode +the state of the 'ausalabode.

    5i%inity in the heart 1 the >i%inity styled Dama, the "rime%alOne; whose form is the 6ourth; who trans'ends the 6ourth, who eB'eeds all; whoo''upies all seats 'onse'rated with holy spells; who is surrounded on all sides bydeities seated on the main and subordinate seats; who per%ades all parts +from"rana, %ital breath, to naman, name; the deity who is replete with delight; who is inunion with the supreme -pirit; who is in the heart; whose gift is immortality; who is'omplete and who is possessed of senses; who, fore%er, is uprisen; who 'omprisesthree groups; has three abodes, and is the supreme and most eB'ellent Maya; whois the supreme power of ishnu. Cnthrone in the peri'arp of the heart@s lotus thesupreme, sa'red La$shmi, the Maya e%er uprisen; who 'ontrols the senses of 0erde%otees; who o%erwhelms the god of lo%e; who is armed with bow and arrow; whoinspires elo2uen'e; who abides in the 'entre of the moon@s sphere, is adorned withthe 'res'ent, and assumes the guise of the se%enteen "rajapatis. -he is the great

    one, eternally present. 0er hands holding a noose and a goad are 'harming. -he,the threeeyed one, shines li$e the rising sun. n the heart meditate on the goddessMahala$shmi, 'omprehending all glories and possessed of all auspi'ious mar$s. 0erown nature is -pirit. -he is flawless. 0er name is #ri$uta. -he has a smiling fa'e, isbeautiful, is the great Maya, and is eBtremely fas'inating. -he is adorned with greatearrings. -he rests on the threefold seat and abides in the nameless sa'red abode,

    -ripitha. -he is the great &haira%i, the power of -pirit, the great #ripura. Meditateon 0er through the great yoga of meditation. Whoso $nows 0er thus +fulfils his life.

    #his is the great 7panishad.

    () #hen, therefore, ha%ing uttered the %erse, ?Let us for all$nowing 6ire the somapress@, et'., one a'hie%es the realiEation of #ripura.

    3) #he seers said) CBplain the form of the eBtensi%e seedletters latent in thebeginning, middle and end of the glorifi'atory %erse, ?Let us for all$nowing fireF@

    5) #he Lord said to them) 7tter the %erse, ?Let us for all$nowing 6ire the somapress@, et'. /epeat ba'$wards the last group of the Adi%idya +i.e. sa $a la hrim.Lengthen the first syllable of the first group +as $a and that of the se'ond group +asha. +#ogether we get $a ha. ?Let us press the soma@. #hey say that +this %erserefers to the state in whi'h 'osmi' ignoran'e %anishes; it is 'ompetent +toeBtinguish all that has been imagined as other than &rahman; it is the mosteB'ellent and blissful; it is the great glory.

    8) #he first group +'alled agbha%a, the same as all prosperity, 'auses thesublation +of the world of obje'ts; the se'ond group +named after Dama supports+the world of obje'ts; the third +named after -a$ti brings it into being. #husmeditating on the three groups and purifying the mind, and elu'idating thein'antation of #ripura, one utters the mantra ?Let us for all$nowing 6ire the somapress@, et'.; then +there dawns the wisdom 'alled the in'antation ofMaha%idyesh%ari.

    9) +/elying on the in'antation of #ripuresh%ari, ha%ing uttered the wordjata%edase ?for all$nowing 6ire@H and asso'iating the dot denoting the di%ineprin'iple of -i%a with the %owels a, et'., of the "rana%a, one gets the serpentpowerthat has be'ome one with immortality and has assumed the triangular form +at thebase of the spinal 'olumn.

    =) &y the syllables jata, et'., the supreme +undifferentiated -elf, -i%a, is denoted.

    ) 6rom birth onwards gi%en to desires, one desires +Lordship. +When desires arerenoun'ed perfe'tion +of one@s nature results. +-o the $nowers of &rahmande'lare.

    ) #hat %ery thing +the perfe't spirit of -i%a, we de'lare aright as installed in thethree las, the seedletters of the earth. 4larifying the letters of the mantras in thelight of the signifi'an'e of the three las +whi'h denote eBisten'e$nowledgeblissabsolute, ea'h in the midst +of the three groups, the word gotra must beunderstood. #he prin'iple of -i%a is said to ha%e been installed in this gotra. #hushas it been elu'idated. #hen follows the Dama$ala +the se'ond group beginningwith ha. #he rest may be elu'idated as before with referen'e to %amam+'ompetent. #he in'antation thus eBplained is styled -ar%ara$sha$ari, the Allprote'ting one.

    (:) #hus ha%ing 'larified this in'antation of #ripureshi by means of the %ersejata%edase, et'., there remains but the one supreme >i%inity, the Light. Or +thisresults from the in'antation +'onsisting of the three groups. Grant the boon of the6ourth +i.e. meditate on the fa't that the three groups do not eBist independently of-i%a. 6ully identify the ?@ sense with the nature of the Lord. /elate ea'h of thethree groups with the in'antation styled the Allprote'ting one. Also 'larify thein'antation of the Atmasana form. /epeat the %erse jata%edase, et'., and +on'emore re'all to mind the Allprote'ting in'antation. Assign the form of -i%a and-a$ti to the initial and final positions +of the Allprote'ting in'antation. Dnow thatthe syllable sa in the %erse jata%edase, et'., has -a$ti as its 2uintessen'e and thatthe word soma represents the prowess whose 2uintessen'e is -i%a. Whoso $nowsthis be'omes great.

    (() #hus elu'idate this in'antation whi'h abides in #ripura and whi'h is set forthin the 'ir'ular seat. /epeat the %erse jata%edase, et'., and also the in'antation of

    #ripuresh%ari whi'h is e%er as'endant and whose 2uintessen'e is -i%a and -a$ti, asalready set forth. Iata%edas symboliEes -i%a, and sa has the imperishable -a$ti asits essen'e. Clu'idate #ripura, the e%eras'endant Mahala$shmi, resting on the seatof mantras +symboliEed by ha and sa, denoting the sun and the moon, per%adingthe three groups and subsisting in between -i%a and the prime%al "ower. /epeat

    the %erse jata%edase suna%ama somam, et'., and 'all to mind the pre%iousin'antation asso'iated with the seat of the real -elf. With the words %eda, et'., +inthe %erse, essentially the same as the sun denoted by ha, is indi'ated theuni%ersal "ower of the -pirit +'i''ha$ti e%eras'endant. "ut o%er it the dot+denoting the -i%a prin'iple. Clu'idate the in'antation of #ripura, garlanded,abiding in the seat of the Adept. /epeat the %erse jata%edase suna%ama somam,et'. /elying on the en'hanting #ripura, 'ontemplate +0er in the syllables $a la.Clu'idate the embodied in'antation of #ripura, the so%ereign o%er all in'antations./epeat jata%edase, et'., and relying on #ripura, the La$shmi, one 'onsumes fire.

    (3) Clu'idate the in'antation of #ripura, the Mother, the so%ereign threefold Light,$nowing that she 'onsumes with a mouth of fire.

    (5) #hus with the words sa mah parsad ati durgani %is%a, -he illuminates thesupreme, -he who is the inner -elf. 0er in'antation, here, ha%ing be'ome an effe't,is utiliEed in the a't of hailing. -he is deemed 'ompetent in e%ery way.

    (8) #hus these eight in'antations, the %ery limbs of the di%ine Mahamaya areelu'idated.

    (9) #he gods %erily said to the blessed Lord) #ell us about the foremost of thewheels, whi'h promotes all desires, is adored of all, ta$es all forms, fa'es all2uarters, and is the gateway to Liberation, by adoring whi'h the Jogins 'ut through+the $not of differen'es into the undifferen'ed bliss of supreme &rahman.

    (raw four lines going up from the 'losed regions. n dueorder, with the two measuring lines, the wheel 'omes to be mar$ed with tentriangles.

    () n the same manner, again, the wheel with ten spo$es ta$es shape.

    3:) #he wheel with fourteen spo$es ta$es shape by joining the measuring linebrought up to the parts of the ten spo$es, after ha%ing joined the four %erti'es ofthe 'entral triangles with the triangles at the eBtremities of the four lines.

    3() #hen ta$e shape respe'ti%ely the wheels en%eloped in the eight lotuses, thesiBteen lotuses, and the earthwheel with four gates.

    is 'hara'teriEed by the mysti' mar$ of the Allagitating for'e.

    38) #he se'ond wheel fulfils all eBpe'tations, is 'onjoined with the siBteenattra'ti%e powers beginning with sa$ama. t is well prote'ted, o''upied by theso%ereign #ripura, and is 'hara'teriEed by the mysti' mar$ of the Alls'atteringfor'e.

    39) #he third wheel agitates all and is adorned with the eight flowers of 4upid. tis better se'ured, o''upied by the beautiful #ripura, and 'hara'teriEed by themysti' mar$ of the Allfas'inating for'e.

    53) All the metres indeed ha%e passed o%er as spo$es into the wheel. #his wheelis the -ri'ha$ra.

    55) n its hub, in the sphere of fire, are the sun and the moon. Worship the seat of

    the syllable Om there. #here is the mperishable in the form of the point. 4all tomind the supreme n'antation, s$yli$e, and immanent in it. &ring thither the great

    #ripura, the beautiful. "etition 0er with the single %erse)

    Goddess ! n mil$ bathed, with sandal paste

    &esmeared ! Goddess! With bil%a lea%es worshipped !

    >urga ! see$ refuge in #hee.

    Adore 0er with the mantra of Mayala$shmi. #hus spo$e the blessed Lord.

    58) With these mantras adore the blessed Goddess. #hen -he be'omes pleasedand manifests 0erself. -o whoe%er worships with these mantras sees &rahman. 0esees all things and a'hie%es immortality 1 whosoe%er $nows thus. #his is the great7panishad.

    () #he gods said to the blessed Lord) We would fashion the mysti' mar$s. #heblessed Lord told them) -eated in the lotus posture with the region of the $neestou'hing the earth, ma$e the mysti' mar$s.

    3) 0e who $nows the mysti' mar$ of the triangle attra'ts all; he $nows all; enjoysall fruits; he brea$s up all and immobiliEes the foe. Deeping the middle fingers o%erthe ring fingers, he +brings together the little fingers and the thumbs, theforefingers being left free li$e rods pointing downward. #hus is the first mar$ made+the triangle.

    5) #he same with the middle fingers joined is the se'ond +the seed.

    9) /ubbing the palms in the re%erse order, bringing together the thumbs and theforefingers, the fourth is formed +the great goad.

    eluder is made when the thumbs are joined to the nailsof the middle fingers, after rubbing with the forefinger on the little finger and thering fingers held straight with the middle fingers.

    =) #he same shaped at the tip li$e a goad is the siBth +the Allsubduing.

    ) Deeping the left hand in the right resting posture, the ring fingers in the middleof the little fingers, and the middle fingers with the forefingers 'rossed o%er them,the thumbs straight, one gets the se%enth, the $he'hari +the Allattra'ting.

    ) n the allupright, allretra'ting posture, $eeping ea'h little finger in the spa'ebetween its middle finger and the ring finger, and at the sides the forefingers in theshape of the goad, and the thumbs and palms in 'onta't, the eighth is formed +theAlls'attering.

    (:) #he ring fingers rest on the ba'$ of the middle fingers; the thumbs holdingthe middle fingers on whi'h rest the forefingers remain in the middle 1 thus is theninth formed +the Allagitating.

    (() Deeping the little fingers e2ually in and the thumbs, too, e2ually in, the

    mysti' mar$ 'omes to ha%e three se'tions. #he fi%e arrows, the mysti' mar$s su'has the fi%e, are 'lear.

    (3) Drom is the seed of the goad; +ha, sa are those of -i%a and -a$ti; $ha, of$illing; prem, of en'hantment; ha, sa, $ha, prem, of $he'hari; ha +of the sun;straum +of desire; +$a the first seed of agbha%a is the ninth. +0a, the first seed ofDama$uta is the tenth. Whoso $nows thus +be'omes an adept in mantra.

    (5) *ow, therefore, we shall eBpound the wheel that has be'ome the Dama$ala.0rim, $lim, aim, blum, straum 1 these fi%e desires per%ade the whole wheel. Wrap

    up the middle desire, aim, in the past +desire, straum, +i.e. aim, straum, aim. Letthis group be put within blum. &ind up twi'e the end sought with the two medialaims and worship +setting them in the bir'hbar$. Whoso $nows this wheel $nowsall; he attra'ts all the worlds; he immobiliEes e%erything. #he wheel dyed in indigoslays foes, arrests all mo%ements. -mearing it with la', one 'ontrols all worlds.7ttering the formula nine la$hs of times, one attains the status of /udra. Wrappingup +the wheel in the ins'ribed diagram, one be'omes %i'torious. Offering oblationin the fire built in a triangular firepla'e, one wins o%er women. >oing so in a firepla'e shaped li$e a rod or a 'ir'le one a'2uires unri%alled wealth. >oing so in a

    7ttering this hymn, tou'h the body pronoun'ing ga with the dot abo%e. &ow downto Ganesha saying gam to Ganesha. Om, &ow unto the blessed Lord, with ashsmeared limbs, of formidable prowess. Dill ! Dill !! burn ! burn !! 'onsume !'onsume !! subdue ! subdue !! erase ! erase !! &rea$er up of the plough ! At thefoot of the trident , se'ure the a''omplishment of the symbol.

    >ry up ! >ry up !! #he Castern sea ! mmobiliEe ! mmobiliEe!! Jou who disrupt the'ounsels, the ma'hines, the strategy, the messengers, the armies of the enemy,tear up ! tear up !! 'ut up ! 'ut up !! hrim, phat, -%aha. With this worship the Lordof the field.

    (9) Oh maid of noble lineage !

    We $now, we 'ontemplate a 'rore

    Of mantras; so many Dula@s for'e

    nspire us e%er.

    #hus adoring the maiden, whi'he%er aspirant meditates, attains immortality. 0eattains renown and the full stret'h of life. Or, $nowing the -upreme &rahman, heabides. Whosoe%er $nows thus +wins the fruit. #his is the great 7panishad.
