Measurement Process

•Stage 1: CaptureCaptures the truck in movement.

30-45 seconds per capture.*

150,000 samples per second.

Capacity of up to 960 trucks per day.

The picture is stored automatically

for auditing.

•Stage 2: ProfilesAs the truck passes, “profiles” are

captured.“Cuts” every 5cm – aprox. 400 cuts are

generated for a standard load.

Millimetric precision – high definition.

Measurement Process

•D

•Stage 3: Frame volumeGrouping of the profiles generates

a 3D image.

Sophisticated image recognition algorithm separates the wood from

the truck.

Calculates the frame volume taking

into account more than 1,000,000 measurements.

99% accuracy – certified by

DICTUC.*

•*DICTUC (Dirección de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica de la Pontifícia Universidad Católica de Chile) commercially develops and implements projects of innovation and technology transference in national and international markets.

Measurement Process

•Stage 4: Biometric variablesPeriphery logs are modeled.

Each log in the periphery is an

individual 3D object. This allows for the calculation of

biometric variables:

• length

• diameter• curvature

• stacking

• etc.

• Curvature

• Stacking•Lengths

• Diameters

Measurement Process

•Stage 5: Solid volumeIdentification of characteristics for each

log in the periphery.

The solid volume is calculated with a

mathematical model using the aforementioned variables.

An individualized model is calibrated

for each species in each mill in order to

ensure accuracy. The models can be updated

periodically.

•Width

•Height

•Stage 6: Results and auditing

Results are sent to the mill’s ERP

(including pictures and 3D images).

All of the data is accessible by

Internet.

The auditing system allows for users

to filter the data by certain criteria and even electronically measure a

truck (in the case of doubts, for

example).

Vext is typically :

• For a Pulp mill 10%-20% of total volume

• For a Saw mill 40-60% of total volume

• Example of a study for US prospect:

• For these samples, 46% to 65% of logs are on the periphery

• An easy figure to remember: 30 cm diameter 50% wood is on the periphery

Frame volume accuracy

• Validation bundle: A structure of PVC tubes

that simulates a bundle of wood. The

volume of the bundle can be modified by

adding tubes and it is easy to measure the

bundle precisely by hand.*

•How is frame volume accuracy verified?

• Adjusted manual measurement (AMM):

Manual method in which up to 50 height,

width, and length measurements are taken

(versus less than 10 with normal manual

measurement).

• * A validation bundle is included with all Woodtech solutions.

•Results

•Solid volume accuracy•According to results in mills, the distribution of differences curve is the following:

• Performance measurements:Average of the differences 0%.Standard deviation of the differences 3%-95% possess a difference less than 5.0%

Repeatability

• Objective:• Validate that Logmeter measurements are

repeatable.

• Test Protocol:The validation bundle is loaded on a truck.

The truck is measured “n” times (+/- 10) by the Logmeter® 4000.The measurements (frame volume) are compared to the exact known volume.

•Conclusion:•A measurement that is not repeatable cannot be precise.

•When measuring the validation bundle, the Logmeter consistently measures the frame volume accurately, with an average absolute difference of 0.45%.

•Logmeter’s measurements are highly repeatable and precise.

ACCURACY: Traditional measurement methods tend to overestimate

the quantity of wood received, thus increasing transport and harvest

costs. The Logmeter® 4000 takes more than 1 million

measurements per truck. As it more precise, it does not

overestimate the loads.

SPEED: Reduces operational costs as it requires less operators. Also

reduces truck waiting times, allowing for more transport cycles.

AUTOMATICITY: Does not involve many processes nor does it

require specialized operators, thus minimizing data-entry errors.

AUDITING: Allows for later revision of all results as well as remote

access for suppliers and for headquarters. This reduces the

possibility of fraud and loss.

•Main Benefits•Directs

•All Woodtech solutions offer the following direct economic benefits:

•Indirects

TRANSPARENCY: Reduces conflicts with suppliers as the

measurement process is objective.

NO SAMPLING: All trucks are measured. This eliminates conversion

factors and uncertainty regarding sample representativity.

SAFETY: Zero risk for the operator as he/she does not need to get

on top of the load.

ECO-FRIENDLY: 100% safe for the environment – does not use fuel

or lubricants.

•All Woodtech solutions offer the following indirect economic benefits:

Main Benefits

Correctly quantify wood is important...But far from simple

There is no perfect method …But there are advancements.
