2 PH films on war, progressto compete in Cannes fest

ter to show off, he said, the “diverse terrain” ofnorthern Philippines. He explained: “Ilocos isbeautiful, dry, wet, lush. There are sanddunes, mountains, coastline communitiesas well as a bustlingcity.”

He first wanted toshoot in Bicol, but fi-nally went for IlocosNorte, specifically Brgy.La Paz in Paoay town,

an area undergoing amajor makeover. “Itused to be an impover-ished neighborhood,”said Diaz. “But it ishome to a lot of Over-seas Filipino Workers, and it is changingrapidly.” The film tack-les the themes ofprogress and migra-tion, Diaz said.

Produced byWacky O Productions,Norte features SidLucero, AngeliBayani, Archie Alema-nia, Hazel Orencio,Soliman Cruz, MaePaner, AngelinaKanapi, Perry Dizon,Noel Sto. Domingo,Moira, Dea Formaciland Kristian Chua inthe cast.

“(Ilocos NorteGov.) Imee Marcossuggested the loca-tion,” Diaz recalled.“The local govern-ment and the resi-dents were very coop-erative during theshoot.”

The script was acollaboration betweenDiaz and playwrightRody Vera, who alsowrote Death March.

Vera admitted, “I’mhappy and proud, butnot overly so. LikeWoody Allen, I tendto be anhedonic whenit comes to festivalsand awards.”

Apart from Vera,Alix’s war dramashares another thingwith Norte—lead actorLucero who plays asoldier, along with fel-low mainstream starsZanjoe Marudo, SamMilby, Jason Abalos,Carlo Aquino, FelixRoco and Jacky Woo.

Alix related thatthe actors, despitetheir busy schedules, readily joined theproduction because ofits historical theme.“For Jason, it was alsovery personal; hisgrandfather was inthe real DeathMarch.”

The film recountshow over 60,000 Fil-ipino and Americanprisoners, many ofthem wounded, wereforced by the occupy-ing Japanese Army towalk for 128 kilome-ters during World WarII.

Surprised“I was surprised

when (Japanese ac-tor) Jacky agreed notonly to star in, but toproduce, this film. Hesaid that this moviecould encourage peo-ple to talk about thattragic part of ourshared history,” Alixnoted.

After brainstorm-ing with Vera, Alix de-cided to shoot the en-tire movie in a studio.“The script had a lotof surreal elementsthat could beachieved in a studio. The mountains, thetrees, the scenerywere hand-painted byproduction designerArt Nicdao and histeam.”

It’s Alix’s most au-dacious piece ofwork—a fitting finaleto his trilogy on the“dementia of soli-tude.” He explained,“I tackled the samethemes of war, loneli-ness and madness inmy two previous filmsLiberacion andKalayaan.” He is look-ing forward to attend-

ing the festival fromMay 15 to 27.

Always special“Cannes is always

special,” Alix said.“It’s chaotic, crowded, but where else canyou watch commer-cial flicks side by sidewith art-house films?”Diaz, who is currentlywrapping up his film’sfinal cut, is undecidedabout traveling toFrance for the event.

Diaz, however, pointed out that twoFilipino films in UnCertain Regard isgood news for thecountry’s emergentcinema. “It shows theworld that Filipinofilmmakers are con-tinuously experiment-ing, working, creat-ing.” Alix agreed: “It’sa big deal.”

Only 50 of some1,700 films submittedto Cannes this yearwill be screened dur-ing the 11-day event, according to the festi-val site.

Diaz and Alix werehonorees in the firstINQUIRER Indie Bravo!Tribute in 2010.

By Bayani San Diego Jr.

F ILIPINO filmmakers Lav Diazand Adolfo Alix Jr. describe theUn Certain Regard section of

the Cannes International Film Festivalas the “serious, experimental” part ofthe world’s biggest cinema event.

Un Certain Regard,in which the two in-die directors are par-ticipating this year, aims to “showcasefilms of wide-rangingvisions and styles”and “recognizesyoung talent and en-courages innovativeand daring works,”according to onlineaccounts.

Diaz, famous forlengthy, introspectivepieces, told the IN-QUIRER, “It’s famousfor showing artfilms.” His entry,Norte, Hangganan ngKasaysayan (Norte,The End of History),clocks in at four hoursand was filmed on lo-cation in Ilocos Norte.

Alix fielded DeathMarch, which has arunning time of one

hour and 45 minutesand was shot com-pletely in a studio.

It’s a Cannes debutfor Diaz, who haswon twice in theOrizzonti section ofthe Venice festival, another upper-tiergathering—in 2007for “Death in theLand of Encantos”and in 2008 for“Melancholia.”

Second time“Death March” is

Alix’s second movie inthe French fest, nowon its 66th year. In2009, Manila, whichhe codirected withRaya Martin, wasshown in the SpecialScreenings section.
