Mommies know best

I could write a book on thewords of wisdom my late greatmom left me. I would entitle it“Inday Badidayisms.”

Many people took advantageof my mom’s kindness and gen-erosity. I asked her once, “Why doyou continue helping peoplewho duped you?”

She told me her assistancedidn’t go to waste for aslong as she got to helpthose people’s families.

I plead guilty of turninga deaf ear to much of hercounsel; blame it on myrestless nature in my youngeryears.

For instance, her constant re-minder to take note of how a guytreated his mom, because thatwas how he would treat me. I’dhave dodged a lot of heartaches, had I listened.

Although I miss my mom daily,I can’t help smiling at the thoughtthat since, in heaven, she’s nolonger busy being Inday Badiday,

she can now focus on watchingover me and my siblings.

Here’s to you, Ma … I’m allears and all yours.

Martin NieveraMom has given me so much

advice that I could close my eyesto pick and choose. Unfortunately, that is another one of her instruc-tions: “Don’t close your eyes whenyou pick and choose.” But her very

best advice was to let go and liftup all my problems and worries toJesus. She said, “Let God be God.”

And what’s her advice that Iwish I had followed but didn’t?“Don’t have that second serving.”Hahaha!

Aiko MelendezMy mom told me to seek God

first and put him above every-thing, and he will give you, orlead you to, the desires of yourheart. I did many things my waywithout God’s guidance. That’s

why some of mymajor decisionsdidn’t turn outwell.

JoeyGenerosoMy mom al-

ways told me tofollow my dreamand do my bestand be the best inwhatever makesme happy. Shedreamed of a col-lege degree forme, but my call-ing to join bandsbecame a hin-drance to formaleducation. She al-so wanted me tobe a classical pi-anist, which did not happen.

I was closest to my mom, be-ing the youngest of 10 siblings.Wherever she is now, I am confi-dent she is proud of what I haveachieved, even if I didn’t heed heradvice to graduate. I am forevergrateful to my mom for her en-couragement and support.

Grace LeeThe best advice my mom gave

me is to always be humble andentrust everything in life to theLord. She said we achieve successonly through God’s greatness andgrace. She also advised me to es-pecially guard my heart. Lookingback, knowing what I know now,I wish I had listened and triedharder.

Tirso Cruz IIIEarly in life, my mom pre-

pared me for the future. She al-

ways reminded me that when thetime came, I should be a goodprovider for my family. That’swhat I’m doing now. I just wishthat I also followed her advice tofinish my studies. Show biz got inthe way.

Ara MinaShe gave me old-school advice,

like not to sleep when my hair iswet and not to take a bath whenI have my monthly period. Momwas into pamahiin. But she alsoinstilled in me the power ofprayer.

I wish I had listened to her ad-vice about business. She told menot to put up a business if I didn’thave time to oversee it. Trueenough, my casting agency foldedup and my restaurant closed afterjust a few years.

WITH momentum on its side,Air21 battles San Mig Coffee to-day looking for that final escapeact that would put the Expressin unchartered but heady terri-tory in the PBA Commissioner’sCup.

After an authoritative 94-91Game 4 win Monday night, theExpress have all the confidencethey need going into theirfourth knockout match and awin will put them in a title se-ries for the first time in theirPBA existence.

The do-or-die game is set at 8p.m. at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The burden of adjustmentfalls on the shoulders of theMixers, who trailed by a manyas 17 points in their most lop-sided defeat of these playoffs.

Air21 coach Franz Pumaren’sfloating zone befuddled theMixers early, and Wesley With-erspoon was on target all nightas the Express dealt San Mig abeating.

The Express have gotten thisfar by hurdling their first threeKO matches—the first twoagainst No. 2 seed San Miguel

Beer—and would be the onesplaying with lesser pressure. Noone expected them to be here inthe first place.

“This is a new thing for someof my players,” Pumaren said.“San Mig has been in this situa-tion many times before. We willjust have to stay aggressive.”

And the reedy Witherspoonwas the biggest headache for SanMig coach Tim Cone in Game 4.

“I have been very hard onhim the past few days,”Pumaren said. “(On Mondaynight), he showed his talent, histrue character.”
