I trust that you had a reinvigorating Christmas period and have made the appropri-ate pledges for ensuring that the new-year would be a more fruitful one. 2016 is going to be a very challenging year for TOSL. The petrochemical sector has been through four down cycles since 1985. The longest was between 1990 and 1998 when West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil traded at $19.50/barrel and we sur-vived! However, we need to grow not just survive. In order to do this we must adapt by ensuring that our resident, highly skilled staff apply the appropriate tools and technology available so as to optimize our processes. It is only when changes become mandatory that the status quo gets challenged and the true grit and resili-ence of a workforce become evident. Achieving our forecast goals depend inter alia on focused cost control, efficient completion techniques, meeting deadlines, estab-lishing new business opportunities, being closer to our customers and leveraging technology. Simply put, our staff need to do more with less. In this way, TOSL shall emerge from this current slump in oil and gas prices as a much stronger, more com-petitive and cohesive organization.

The Board is fully cognizant of the efforts needed. Upon our appointment on Octo-ber 01, 2015 we spent the last quarter of 2015 understanding the varied and multi-faceted operations of TOSL. The three non-executive directors bring new skills to the corporate management team viz: Messrs. Ramesh Ramasundaram (Finance), Romney Thomas (Law) and me (Engineering/IT). It is expected that these skills, augmented by those of the executive Directors, would serve to successfully steer TOSL through this downturn.

We look forward to working with you during this challenging, but exciting period. Opportunities abound for those who rise to the challenges.

H..private enterprise to do its job.

The announcement by Jwala Rambarran, the Central Bank Governor, in early December 2015 that we were in a recession is no news for us. In fact, the signs were there since the global financial crisis of 2008 and the collapse of Clico at that time. A government, focused on the long-term health of our nation, would have weaned the population away from all of the subsidies, tied gas prices at the pump to world prices and, most of all, would have had a clear plan to diversify the economy away from oil and gas. Previous Governments also needed to level with the population so that all understood the dynamics of the world. This did not happen as the State continued to play politics and, not for one moment, took at a long-term view of the economy.

The wanton spending by the last administration did not help matters. During its tenure we spent money which we did not have and never thought that there would be a tomorrow which is now upon us all. As oil prices continued its down-wards spiral from October 2014 to the present, we saw increasing spending and no thought of educating the population and facing the realities of the marketplace. The last administration scrapped all they could from the coffers of the NGC, borrowed to the limit from the Central Bank, and mortgaged the future of our nation - all in an effort to win the election of September 2015.

It is now left to the present government to educate the population, try and change the culture, diversify the economy and be up front with the population so that together we can make the sacrifices which are necessary if we are to get the MV T&T back on an even keel. It would take statesmanship which is a rare commodity in our twin island republic. Our future is dependent on the kind of statesmanship which this present administration must practice if we are to take our-selves out of the hole in which previous administrations have placed us.

We did not, however, get where we are as a country only as a result of low oil and gas prices which began to fall precip-itously from October 2014. The signs were there for all to read but those who dared to speak out were labelled as prophets of doom and gloom. The discovery of shale oil and gas in the USA did not help matters as it made the USA self- sufficient in oil and gas and helped drive prices lower. The recent decision by OPEC to continue to pump oil would suggest that we are in for the long haul with low oil prices and some pundits have indicated that oil prices can fall as low as US $30.00 per bbl in the not too distant future.

Based on the above, it is anticipated that the government will have to take some harsh measures to manage the econo-my and with the low intake of foreign currency from the Energy and Petrochemical Sectors then measures will have to be taken to reduce the demand for US dollars and this can push the economy in a tail spin if we do not get it right.

We at TOSL watched what was unravelling in the T & T economy and took measures to protect the long-term interest of our company. In 2013, we established the Business Development Group and we expanded this division's function in 2014 to include a Marketing arm. We also established in 2014 a Project Development and Execution Group to improve our efficiency of delivery to the customer. Additionally, we continued to diversify our offering and expedited the process of entering the Caribbean markets including those in Suriname and Guyana. The diversification process continued when we took a substantial interest in The Eagle Ibis company where we are now involved in optimizing the perfor-mance of land based wells, and this augers well for our future.

In March 2015, we were invited by the Well Services Group to work with them to deliver a Mobile Operating Production Facility (MOPU) for Petrotrin at its Trinmar operations; this shall be on-stream in the first quarter of 2016. We are con-tinuing to work to optimize our operations and, in this regard, we appointed a new Board of Directors in October 2015 with the clear mandate to assist us in charting a new and improved future for TOSL.

We are optimistic that we are prepared for the journey ahead and it is critical that all of our managers become leaders in their own right as it is this group that will lead us into a new and better future. We continue to work with our managers to hone their skills, as we need to have all of our people aligned to the new directions we are pursuing as we continue to build a new and better future for all of our staff.

It was Haruka Nishimatsu, the President and CEO of Japan Airlines who won the "Airline Turnaround Award" in 2015 for the Asia Pacific Region who said and I quote" Business that pursue money first will fail. The business world has lost sight of the basic tenet of business ethics". He is of the view that in any organization, be it government or private busi-ness, that sacrifice and leadership must start at the top. He had set the tone at Japan Airlines.

We have completed our Strategic Plan for the next four years based on continued low oil and gas prices and our plan for 2016 is to grow the business. It was Warren Buffett who indicated that in times of adversity that some of the great-est opportunities come to those who are willing to look and take up the challenge.

As an organization the TOSL ship will continue to forge forward in the headwinds and rough sees ahead. We are of the view that we have the leadership, the sailors and the right vessel to bring us safely into port.

The Quality Department continues on the enhancement drive for the organization by spending time in each area looking for improvement opportunities.

One of the major improvements required was to determine the manner in which nonconformities are reviewed and addressed. Therefore, in an effort to improve this we conducted training for all managers and a few senior personnel on root cause analysis. To avoid the recurrence of an issue the most important aspect is determining the root cause. Hence, this training has improved the knowledge of our senior personnel ensuring they conduct more effective root cause analysis.

Another improvement was providing training for persons who control measuring equipment. The training educated persons on how to effectively control these devices to ensure accuracy.

As part of the year end wrap up, the Quality Department recognizes Daron Rambarran, QA/QC Supervisor of the Construction and Maintenance Department, for his efforts during 2015 in promoting a Quality Culture at TOSL. Daron continues to drive quali-ty through Divisional meetings, one on one sessions with other members of staff and reviewing processes to make them more effective. Thanks Daron for your continued persistence and efforts.

Given the convenience that online shopping provides, protecting ourselves from identity thieves and online scams has be-come absolutely necessary. The popularity and profitability of online shopping has brought with it unscrupulous persons looking to take advantage of unsuspecting shoppers. In an effort to increase customer awareness and reduce the risk of becoming a victim of cyber-crime, take a look at the five (5) basic tips for online shopping. 1. Use a good anti-virus program

It is critical that online shoppers protect their PC from viruses and other attacks.

2. Update your browser Older browsers, besides not working as well with some websites, often have holes in their security that hackers have discovered and can exploit.

3. Look for HTTPS in the URL rather than HTTP

The added "S" means that the way your information is being sent is secure. Other signs of a secure site are a closed lock or unbroken key at the bottom of the screen. H...(Con’t on Pg. 8)

Special Note: Free Diving is an Extremely Dangerous Sport & should not be attempted without proper professional training. The contents in this article are solely informative & in no way represents a Free Diving &

Spearfishing Course.

Leading Condition Monitoring Services & Reliability Engineering at TOSL is only one of Paul Deo’s talents. The other lies in his passion and natural ability for Free Dive spearfishing.

Free Diving is the ability of a diver to descend to great depths while holding his/her breath & without the use of any type of breathing apparatus e.g. Scuba Tanks. The sport was utilized since the Ancient Greek times in order to gather shellfish, sponges & clams for food. It was practised in the Mediterranean Sea while also once forming a part of the Olympics.

Paul has been free diving from the tender age of 6 years old without any knowledge of breath hold diving. “I’ve been Free Diving for many years now having started off between 20 – 50 feet. I took two Free Diving courses in Speyside, Tobago & Pompano Beach, Florida which allowed me to hunt com-fortably up to 80 - 100 feet”. His awesome skill to free dive has enabled him to shoot some pretty impressive fishes. “I look for game such as: Barracudas, Dog Snappers, Mutton Snappers, Yellow Tail Snappers, Groupers, King Fish, Carite, Cavali, African Pompanos, Amber-Jacks & Lobsters”.

Paul achieves this feat through a technique called “Relaxation” which is the

key to Free Diving. Relaxation is achieved with practice and conditions the mind to resist the urge to breathe or dump CO2. Therefore, free diving not on-

ly requires good fitness levels & stamina swimming against strong currents in the reef, but also mind/mental control. “Not everyone can perform breath hold

diving because each individual is different, but practise makes perfect. Some-

times on a Sunday I would swim out from the jetty at Maracas Bay to Tyrico

and back. I hunt these grounds for King Fish, Cavali & Carite”. Paul not only dives along the North Coast of Trinidad, but also dives often in Tobago. He

has even Free Dived the reef of the famous Piton Volcanoes at Sugar Beach

in St. Lucia. His passion continues further up the Caribbean Islands and we wish him future success in this highly talented sport.

4. Change your password regularly We know it's a pain to go through and change the passwords on all your online accounts, not to mention the trouble it'll take to try to remember them all. But if you really want to keep your information (and bank account) safe while you're shopping via the Internet, it's essential to mix up your account passwords every three to six months. You should also make sure that you don't have the same password across all your accounts, since that makes them all vulnerable if one is hacked.

5. Trust your instincts

Don't shop at stores online that give you a bad feeling and appear shady. If at any time during the shopping or checkout process you feel like the site is asking for too much personal information, just quit the transaction and leave the site. Also if the site has a weird address, or fills your screen with pop-ups, just forget about it.

Happy Surfing!
