Recognizing Prior Learning using the Trades Qualification

process

Introduction• Qualifications Assessor

• Assess people that have on the job, prior learning experience, and wish to be recognized for the purpose of writing Trades Qualification, Power Engineer, or Gasfitter Examinations.

• If they are successful they will be issued a Certificate of Qualification or an occupational license in one of the more than 50 trades and occupations in Manitoba. In many cases their certification is recognized across Canada.


• 2nd Year apprentice

• Workplace recognition

• Assessment of learning and validation of progress on the job

First RPL experience

First TQ experience • Applying for Vocational Industrial Teacher Education program

• Accepted after completing the TQ process

• Received another Trade Certificate in Motor Vehicle Mechanic

Qualifications Assessor Overview


The Trades Qualification ProcessClient receives information about the process via:• Telephone contact• Website information• Mail outs• Personal appointment

Client submits:• The assessment application form

• Work experience or verification of experience form

• Employer letters verifying tasks, time and hours in trade

• Self declaration letter

• Proof of upgrading if required

• Assessment fee


Assessment is denied:• More information is requested via letter or personal follow-up with client• Client is reassessed• An unqualified client may be referred to apprenticeship for training that leads to certification

Client writes TQ ExamClient fails TQ exam:1st failure: Client rewrites examination. Client may be counseled or referred to our website for study plan development.

2nd failure: Client is referred to AWEST for essential skills assessment and upgrading recommendations.Essential skills upgrading, trade specific upgrading or examination accommodations may be recommended.

Client passes exam and receives their Certificate of Qualification and / or license

Assessment is approved:• Approval letter and examination application is forwarded to the client• Trade specific booklists and upgrading recommendations can be given to the client at this time.• Examination is scheduled once application and fee is received

• On the job RPL is a time consuming and complicated task but worthwhile for clients

• TQ Clients may have language or essential skills difficulties

• Examinations can be intimidating for clients who have been out of school for many years

• Pre-examination counselling is helpful • Internationally trained clients require support and

guidance to navigate the Trades Qualification system

• At Apprenticeship, helping people overcome difficulties is the most rewarding part of our job
