NEWSLETTER Twiggs County High School Edition January 2016
A Night at the Opera by: Ernest Stackhouse
On the evening of January 14th a small group of Twiggs County Middle and High School Students attended a production of the Opera, The Pirates of Penzance presented by the Atlanta Opera. The event was held at Theatre Dublin and was sponsored by The Dublin Laurens Arts Council. The Dublin Theatre seats approximately 600, and two shows of the production were at full capacity. The students enjoyed a nice dinner at a local Dublin Restaurant before viewing the Opera. Student comments ranged from: "Wow, this was like watching a movie", "I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I really did. I'm glad I came!" to "Their costumes are cool", "Can we come back next year?" In preparation for the performance, I used the Atlanta Opera Guide to construct lessons around the performance. Which helped the students to understand the characters and the plot. This was a great cultural enrichment experience for our students.

at
Goodwill
by: Markel Carswell
I spoke with Neddrick Nichols and Cheniya Parks about the Goodwill field trip. They went to Goodwill to purchase some navy blue blazers, white Tshirts, and khakis pants for their state and regional FBLA leadership conference on Friday, January 22, 2016. “We were able to find at least six blazers.” said Neddrick. The Goodwill they visited was on Zebulon Road in Macon, Georgia.

Criminal Justice (CGTC)
by: John Clance
When I first started this class we were learning about the different types of crimes, terms associated with them, and how the court system worked. Then we began to study about policing, what affect policing made, and how it got started. Now we are currently learning about the American Corrections System. American Corrections is the most interesting out of all of them to me. I study about how it is organized, how it works, when it is effective, and how offenders are treated based on their crimes. This class
can be a little dull at times but its information is extremely useful especially if you are looking for a career in law.
Media & Design by: Markel Carswell
What I learned in the Central Georgia Tech Media & Design course is how to do art on the computer. Mr. McDaniel taught us the shortcut keys on the keyboard. Sometimes that is easier than using a mouse. One thing I like about Media & Design is that you can create beautiful art that people would like to see. This class also will help me later in life when I decide to build a house. I will be able to draw a sketch of how I want the house to look, then the contractors can use the sketch to make building plans. Media & Design is an interesting class and I think most students at TCHS would enjoy taking it.
On Feb. 23rd Mrs. Long has secured an
Atlanta Shakespeare Company
Production of: The Tragedy of Romeo
and Juliet for all of our students and
faculty to enjoy. This is The Company's
16th year performing this play about
young lovers and feuding families. A
story, I'm sure, our students will find
quite interesting.

SLOs by: Shondra Porter What are SLOs? Student Learning Objectives SLOs are an indicator of teachers impact on student academic growth. What subjects are tested on SLOs? CTAE Courses, PE and Spanish are tested using SLOs. What is the purposes of SLOs? To improve student achievement at the classroom level.
“The primary purpose of SLOs is to improve student learning at the classroom level. An equally important purpose of SLOs is to provide evidence of each teacher’s instructional impact on student learning. “ www.gadoe.org
GMO Foods by: Ian Scarbrough
Do you know what you
are eating? Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) is a growing part of our everyday lives. Many believe that GMO is completely bad. However, this is not the case. GMO can be a very good thing for our ever growing society. For instance, GMO plants can be grown at a much faster rate and bear a greater yield than their traditional counterparts. GMO plants can also be modified to be much more resistant to pests and pesticides or to grow out of season. Scientists could also breed specialized plants to provide more of the essential nutrients we need to survive. Increasing the yield of our crops would have tremendous effects on our economy by lowering the average price of food and growing more food at a higher rate may possibly end world hunger.
However, as I mentioned earlier, GMO is a double edged sword, there are some possible drawbacks to these modified plants. For example, it could affect the local environment of the plant. There could be a modified version of a crop that has pollen that is toxic to its parasites, but when that pollen is spread, it could affect all other insect life in the area. Also, consuming GMO foods could have small effects on our later generations. This is because we would be introducing new things to our body that may cause our bodies to change in later generations.
Although the drawbacks are clearly present, the advantages greatly outweigh them. Modifying plants would allow us to grow them all year round without all those pesticides, with the yield being greater and the produce more nourishing. GMO could be the thing that maintains this great society of ours.
