Universal Design
By Ashleigh Ostin
+What is Universal Design?
A set of principles that allows a curriculum to be developed so that all individuals have equal opportunities to learn
Necessary because there is no “average” learner Some learners in schools such as students with
disabilities and those who are “gifted” are being marginalized
UDL helps address learner variability by suggesting flexible goals, methods, materials, and assessments that empower educators to meet varied needs
+3 principles of Universal Design
1. Provide Multiple Means of Representation No one representation or way of presenting material will be
suitable for every learner
2. Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression Learners must be able to express themselves in the way
that is best for them (writing, speech, etc)
3. Provide Multiple Means of Engagement Must be multiple ways that learners are motivated to learn
(some might like working alone, some in partners)
+Where is UDL implemented?

+Why use UDL?
Studies show that learning is much more effective and more individuals are motivated to learn and educational outcomes are improved
UDL should be the new standard in all classrooms
