LENTEN PRAYER

Lord Jesus Christ our God, who wept over Lazarus and poured on him tears of sadness and compassion, accept the tears of my bitterness. Through your passion heal my passions, through your wounds bring remedies to my wounds, through your blood purify my blood and mingle with my body the perfume of your body which gives life. May the gall which your enemies gave you to drink sweeten my soul and dispel the bitterness poured into it by the adversary. May your body, stretched on the wood of the cross, speed towards you my mind, so dragged down by demons. May your head, which you laid on the cross, lift up again my head, buffeted by enemies. May your most hold hands, nailed to the cross by infidels, raise me from

the gulf of perdition towards you, as your holy mouth promised (John 12:32). May your face, which received blows and spitting from wretched men, make my face to shine, deformed as it is by iniquities. May your soul, which you gave up to your Father on the cross, lead me to you by your grace. I have no heart in the mourning to seek you with, I have neither repentance nor compunction, which bring the children back to their inheritance. Lord, I have no tears. My mind is clouded with earthly cares, and cannot lift its gaze to you in sadness. My heart has grown cold in a multitude of temptations, and cannot warm itself with the tears of your love. But you, O Lord Jesus Christ, treasure of all riches, grant me perfect repentance and a sorrowing heart, that I may seek you with all my heart, for apart from you I will have no riches. Give me, therefore, O Good One, your grace.

May the Father from whose bosom you went forth outside of time, from all eternity, renew in me the features of your image. I have abandoned you; do not abandon me. I have gone from your house; please go out to seek me and bring me in your pasture. Number me with the sheep of your chosen flock and feed me with them from the store of your divine Mysteries.

St. John Saba (Syrian monk of the 7th century)

A Disciple's Ten Commandments: St. James 4:7-5:9, especially vs. 17: "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin." The life in Christ is fully in accord

with the ethical mandates of the Ten Commandments given to the ancient People of God (Dt.

5:7-21; Ex. 20:1-17 LXX), yet it differs in a substantial way from life under the Law of Moses

in that Christian living depends on the heart for knowing how "to do good" (Jas. 4:17). This is

especially evident in today's reading from the Epistle of St. James in which the Apostle

effectively states a set of Ten Commandments for disciples who earnestly desire to live the new

life in Christ.

1. Submit to God (vs. 4:7). Our Lord teaches us that "God is a spirit" (Jn. 4:24). To submit to

God requires that we surrender the spiritual aspect of our being to Him, so that our spirit may be

united to Him "in spirit and in truth" (Jn. 4:24). In naming our spiritual aspect as the heart, we

can agree that the starting point of discipleship is the yielding of the heart to God.

2. Resist the devil (vs. 4:7). A preliminary act in the administration of the Baptismal Mystery is

the exorcism of every spirit of error, guile, idolatry, and deceit "which operateth through the

prompting of the Devil." These foul spirits are expelled in the Lord's Name so that the disciple

of Christ may ever continue to "renounce Satan, and all his Angels, and all his works, and all his

service, and all his pride" every day of life in this world.

3. Draw near to God (vs. 4:8). The Mysteries of Baptism and Chrismation are means to help

each disciple draw ever nearer to God through Christ's grace in the power of the Holy Spirit. The

effort and struggle required to approach God "in spirit and in truth" define the life in Christ.

4. Cleanse your hands (vs. 4:8). Clearly, any actions or words in support of any business or

pleasure which sully one's hands are sure to stultify the heart and mind in the service of God.

5. Purify your hearts (vs. 4:8). And, thus, once again, the issue for the Christian returns to the

heart. Our life's work is to rid our hearts of all impure desires that lead to improper actions.

6. Let your laughter be turned to mourning (vs. 4:9). As the Lord Himself taught, "Blessed are

those who mourn, for they shall be comforted" (Mt. 5:4). And why? Because, such mourners

grieve for themselves and for all who are fallen into Satan's lies. The life in Christ is a life of

repentance. Hence later the Apostle adds the command, "Weep and howl" (Jas. 5:1).

7. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord (vs. 4:10). Surely our mourning must be as our

Lord has commanded: to open the pitiful condition of our hearts before God, yet before men to

anoint our head and wash our face, making no appearances of piety and spiritual superiority.

8. Do not speak evil of one another (vs. 4:11). St. James among the Apostolic writers hastens

most swiftly to warn us of the dangers of the unruly tongue for the disciple (Jas. 1:18; 3:1-12).

Further in the passage he warns, "Do not grumble against one another" (vs. 5:9)

9. Live humbly in the will of God, saying, "If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that"

(vs. 4:15). The whole of the life in Christ as one of dependence upon the providence and grace

of God, so that one can readily attribute all things that come to and befall us as from the Lord,

either by His direct causation or by His permission, for our correction and growth.

10. You also be patient. Establish your hearts (vs. 5:8). Thus St. James ends as he began -

directing us to the condition of the heart. We are to cultivate patience in our hearts, as the

Page 8: Ukra=ns;ka Katolyc;ka Cerkva Sv. Arxystratyha Myxa=la

Prophet David also has said: "Wait on the Lord, be thou manful, and let thy heart be strengthened,

and wait on the Lord" (Ps. 26:16:LXX). Turn Thy face away from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (Ps. 50:9,10 LXX)

Cardinal Müller criticizes German bishops’ plan opening Communion to Protestant spouses

February 28, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Cardinal Gerhard Müller is opposing the German bishops’ decision to open Communion to the Protestant spouses of Catholics in some cases.

In a new interview to be published Thursday in the Catholic newspaper Die Tagespost, the former head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith says the German bishops are misusing canon law to support their decision.

The German bishops' website Katholisch.de issued a report on the interview today.

According to the report, Müller describes the expression “in individual cases” as a “rhetorical trick.”

While the Code of Canon Law (in Canon 844 § 4) allows such intercommunion in cases of “a grave spiritual need,” Müller suggests it is “not right” for the German bishops to invoke that provision of the Code in this circumstance.

The Code of Canon Law is not applicable here, according to Müller, since the canonical exceptions deal with the eternal salvation of souls and with danger of death. A mixed marriage, on the other hand, is not an emergency situation.

The cardinal’s concern is supported by canon lawyer Ed Condon who also opposed the new German intercommunion proposal in a February 23 article in the Catholic Herald.

Condon said that “these [German] guidelines would seem to go well beyond canon law, which puts very definite limits on who can receive Communion and when.” He insists, like Cardinal Müller, that “'Danger of death' or comparable 'grave necessity' ... is only envisaged as a one-off occasion. The German bishops’ intentions appear to go well beyond and provide for some kind of stable arrangement – receiving Communion week after week – which is completely outside what the Church provides for.”

In his new interview, Cardinal Müller insists that in the case that someone shares the Catholic Faith in the Eucharist – as a precondition for receiving Holy Communion – he also has to reject those teachings of non-Catholic communities that are opposed to it. He warns the German bishops not to deal, in their upcoming handout concerning intercommunion, “too loosely” with the theological principles that are involved in this matter. Otherwise, one might have to deal “with other undesired consequences” that could be drawn from this kind of approach. Cardinal Müller welcomes progress in the field of ecumenism as “desirable and necessary,” but insists this cannot lead toward a “protestantization of the Catholic Church.”

Cardinal Müller's resistance against the German push for intercommunion comes in the wake of a statement made by Cardinal Robert Sarah.

Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has emphasized that intercommunion with Protestants is impossible.

In a preface to a new book on the Eucharist, the cardinal describes Communion by those who do not profess Catholic faith as “sacrilegious” and an “outrage” against the sacrament.

The cardinal elaborated in 2015, in response to Pope Francis’ comments to the Lutheran woman.

“Intercommunion is not permitted between Catholics and non-Catholics. You must confess the Catholic Faith. A non-Catholic cannot receive Communion. That is very, very clear. It’s not a matter of following your conscience,” the cardinal said.

Page 10: Ukra=ns;ka Katolyc;ka Cerkva Sv. Arxystratyha Myxa=la

“It’s not a personal desire or a personal dialogue with Jesus that determines if I can receive Communion in the Catholic Church. How can I know that the Lord has really said: ‘Come and receive My Body.’ No. A person cannot decide if he is able to receive Communion. He has to have the rule of the Church: i.e., being a Catholic, being in a state of grace, properly married [if married].”

The cardinal warned that if Holy Communion is not received correctly it would not be a benefit to unity, but quoting St. Paul he said, “We will eat our condemnation.”

In the Die Tagespost interview, the German cardinal also again criticizes the suggestion raised by German bishops to offer a blessing for homosexual couples. He had previously characterized these blessings as an “atrocity.” It would be a “sacrilegious presumption” to condemn persons with homosexual inclinations, he says now, “but nobody can ask for God's blessing here since homosexual acts are contrary to the Will of God.”

“Pastoral assistance looks differently and can only serve the peace of soul if it remains on the foundation of truth,” he adds.

March 4, 2018 3RD SUNDAY OF THE GREAT FAST (Tone 6)

VENERATION OF THE HOLY CROSS

The First Antiphon Psalm of the Typica: Bless the Lord, O my soul,* Blessed are You, O Lord. Bless the Lord, O my soul,* and all that is within me bless His holy Name. Bless the Lord, O my soul,* and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all of your sins,* Who heals all your afflictions; Who redeems your life from destruction,* who crowns you with mercy and compassion. The Lord, is compassionate and merciful,* long-suffering and of great mercy. Bless the Lord, O my soul,* and all that is within me bless his holy Name.* Blessed are You, O Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,* now and always, and

forever and ever. Amen. Only-Begotten Son and Word of God …

The Third Antiphon The Beatitudes: Remember us, O Lord,* when you come into Your Kingdom. Blessed are the poor in spirit,* for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are those who mourn,* for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek,* for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,* for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful,* for they will obtain mercy. Blessed are the poor in heart,* for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers,* for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,* for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are you when men reproach you,* and persecute you,* and say all manner of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad,* for great is your reward in Heaven.

Entrance: Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ. Son of God, risen from the dead, save us who sing to You: Alleluia.

TROPAR (Tone 6): Angelic powers were upon Your tomb and the guards became like dead men; Mary stood before Your tomb seeking Your most pure body. You captured Hades without being overcome by it. You met the Virgin and granted life O Lord, risen from the dead, glory be to You!

TROPAR (Tone 1): Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies, and protect Your community by Your cross

Glory be to the Father and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and for ever and ever.

Amen.

KONDAK (Tone 7): No longer does the flaming sword guard the gate of Eden, for a glorious extinction has come upon it, the wood of the Cross. The sting has been drawn from death and the victory from hell. And Thou, my Savior, didst come and shout to those in hell: Enter Paradise again.

In place of Holy God, Holy and Mighty…… (Khrestu Tvojemu….)

To Your cross, O Master, we bow in veneration, and we glorify Your holy resurrection (3)

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit now and for ever and ever. Amen.

And we glorify Your holy resurrection.

To Your cross, O Master, we bow in veneration, and we glorify Your holy resurrection

PROKIMEN (Tone 6) : Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. Verse: Unto You I will cry, O Lord my God, lest You turn from me in silence. Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance.

A reading from the Epistle of St. Paul to Hebrews (4,14-5,6)

Brethren: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus,

the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is

unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who has similarly been tested in every

way, yet without sin. So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy

and to find grace for timely help. Every high priest is taken from among men and made

their representative before God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He is able to deal

patiently with the ignorant and erring, for he himself is beset by weakness and so, for this

reason must make sin offerings for himself as well as for the people. No one takes this

honor upon himself but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. In the same way, it

was not Christ who glorified himself in becoming high priest, but rather the one who said to

him: “You are my son; this day I have begotten you”; just as he says in another place: “You

are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.”

ALLELUIA (Tone 1) : Remember Your congregation which You acquired from the beginning. Alleluia. (3) Verse: But God is our king before the ages; He has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth. Alleluia (3)

INSTEAD OF "It is truly right..."

In thee rejoices, O thou who art full of grace, all creation, the assembly of the angels and the race of man, O Sanctified Temple and rational Paradise, Boast of Virgins, of whom God was incarnate and became a child, even our God, who is before the ages, for He made of thy body a throne and thy womb did He form more spacious than the heavens. In thee rejoices, O thou who art full of grace, all creation. Glory to thee.

COMMUNION HYMN:

Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest. Alleluia. (3)

Let the light of Your countenance, O Lord, shine upon us. Alleluia. (3)

Veneration of the Precious Cross after the Divine Liturgy: (Khrestu Tvojemu….)

Not only the Third Sunday of Great Lent, but the week that follows, are devoted to welcoming the Precious Cross of Christ. This adoration of the Cross does not have a penitential character, but rather the opposite: “through the Cross joy has come to the whole world.” Having reached the midpoint of Lent we take refreshment, as though at a spiritual oasis, in the shade of the Cross, which is the banner and emblem of Christ’s victory. The Cross is a sign of our joy in Christ’s triumph. The liturgical texts express this joy; all the hymns in praise of the Cross have a victorious note to them. (The Canon of Sunday Matins resembles the Paschal Canon of Saint John of Damascus.)

Cardinal Sarah: Top western prelates are part of a ‘new betrayal’ of

Jesus’ teachings BELGIUM, February 27, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – High-level prelates looking to change Catholic Church teaching on life, marriage, and the family are guilty of a “new betrayal,” said Cardinal Robert Sarah.

Such clerics “contribute to the destruction of the natural institution of marriage as well as the family,” he said in a talk to a church full of people during his February 6-7 visit to Belgium. His remarks were translated by Giuseppe Pellegrino.

Cardinal Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, accused some unnamed top-ranking prelates of “working to cause modifications to Christian morality.”

“Some high-ranking prelates, above all those coming from opulent nations, are working to cause modifications to Christian morality with regard to the absolute respect for life from conception until natural death, the question of the divorced and civilly remarried, and other problematic family situations,” he said.

“These ‘guardians of the faith’ however ought not to lose sight of the fact that the problem posed by the fragmentation of the ends of marriage is a problem of natural morality,” he continued.

“The great derivations became manifest when some prelates or Catholic intellectuals began to say or write ‘a green light for abortion,’ ‘a green light for euthanasia.’ Now, from the moment that Catholics abandon the teaching of Jesus and the Magisterium of the Church, they contribute to the destruction of the natural institution of marriage as well as the family and it is now the entire human family which finds itself fractured by this new betrayal on the part of priests,” he added.

The Cardinal referenced Humanae Vitae, an encyclical issued 50 years ago that many have found to be prophetic in its prediction of destruction in society owing to the advent of artificial contraception.

“The Church needs to turn to the encyclical Humanae Vitae of Paul VI as well as to the teachings of John Paul II and Benedict XVI on these vital questions for the human race,” said Sarah.

Page 15: Ukra=ns;ka Katolyc;ka Cerkva Sv. Arxystratyha Myxa=la

“The Church needs to affirm with strength and without ambiguity the Magisterial weight of all of this teaching, display clearly its continuity (with the Tradition) and protect this treasure from the predators of this world without God in which we live,” he said.

The cardinal made his remarks before a full church with several senior Belgian churchmen present, including Cardinal Jozef De Kesel archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels and Belgium’s apostolic nuncio and Abbot Philippe Mawet, the Church’s local head of the French-speaking pastoral ministry.

The Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship, Cardinal Sarah has several times made forthright statements in support of Catholic principles, most recently calling upon Catholics to return to receiving Holy Communion on the tongue and kneeling.

His upholding of Church teaching in both the areas of doctrine and liturgy has drawn liberal ire and apparent rebuke from other Church leaders.

While in Belgium, Cardinal Sarah also gave an interview with Catholic media outlet Cathobel in which he was also critical of Church leadership for departing from the Church’s teaching to remain relevant in today’s culture.

He said the Church today should face up to important questions, but especially to “her fidelity to Jesus, to his Gospel, to the teaching which she has always received from the first popes, from the councils…and this is not evident, because the Church desires to adapt herself to the cultural context, to modern culture.”

“Faith has become lacking, not only on the level of the people of God but also among those responsible for the Church,” Sarah said. “Sometimes we can ask ourselves if we really have faith.”

The deficiency of faith is killing Western culture, he added.

“Not only is the West losing its soul, but it is committing suicide, because a tree without roots is condemned to death,” he said. “I think that the West cannot renounce its roots, which created its culture and its values.”

Cardinal Sarah continued that, “There are chilling things happening in the West.” He criticized governments who hold foreign aid over the heads of developing nations for their acceptance of abortion.

“I think that a parliament which authorizes the death of an innocent baby, without defense, is committing a grave act of violence against the human person,” he said. “When abortion is imposed, especially on nations in the developing world, saying that if they do not accept it they will no longer receive aid, it is an act of violence.”

This comes from forsaking God, said Cardinal Sarah, and leads to objectifying human beings.

“And it is no surprise. When God is abandoned, man is also abandoned; there is no longer a clear vision of who man is,” he said. “This is a great anthropological crisis in the West. And it leads to people being treated like objects.”
