Number Statements T / F

1Native English speakers see numbers in a different way from native Chinese speakers.

2Native English speakers engaged a part of the brain involved in quantity representation and reading, but native Chinese speakers did not.

3English speakers used a brain region involved in the processing of visual information while Chinese speakers showed activity in a language-processing area of the brain.

4These two kinds of people’s difference in doing math lies in the fact that they use different languages.

5Different cultural factors partly result in their different ways of doing math.

Someday Everything Will Be Acronyms

1 Actually, CIA, FBI, AOL, NBA... and the like are more than just abbreviations. Many

Stock Exchange symbols have three letters as well.

2 As time will pass, in writing, words will no longer be commonly used. Only their first

letters will be welcome and appreciated.

3 As many people know, acronyms play a more important role in the present world. They

are now used not only to shorten long names or titles, but to convey entire sentences. That last

thing is most commonly encountered in text messaging.

4 Use of acronyms in such forms of dialogue sure has its advantages. It’s fast and easy,

saving a fair bit of time. For those who don’t have much time to spare, that would definitely be

nice. Same goes for those who don’t feel motivated enough to create full sentences. Another

thing some people might take as an advantage is the way the first letters of the words can

disguise the meaning that the sentence contains. Not everybody knows the meaning behind

acronyms, even if one is familiar with that type of thing. It’s more difficult to figure out a

bunch of words by looking at their first letters if you are not an official participant of the

conversation. It’s fairly obvious what would be the downside of that.

Page 16: UNIT SEVEN Part Contents UNIT SEVEN Next >< Back Part 1 Do you know these languages? Which are you good at? Back ABCDEF Japanese Russian FrenchKorean

5 Although it is a fast and effective way to communicate through text messaging, I

don’t see how acronyms would improve anyone’s verbal and vocabulary skills. Personal

manner of speech is all a matter of choice, but isn’t it better to be articulate than have

trouble coming up with things to say when one needs to talk out loud? There is already a

problem with a decreasing variety in vocabulary and speech among the general public.

Fewer of the different words and synonyms are used, while the people choosing to insert

some “long” words into their speech are often frowned upon for no good reason. If

making acronyms a part of your life won’t worsen your terms with your daily speech, it

certainly won’t bring any improvements.

6 Most people who communicate over the Internet are familiar with acronym meaning

s, but some report not knowing what they mean. It would be unfair if those who don’t want

to learn acronyms, or have trouble retaining them in their head, were excluded from various

forms of online communication. Fortunately, many online communities favour typing out th

e entire sentence in all posts, and there are quite a few people who would rather do that in

independent forms of text messaging.

7 With the circumstances now being as they are, it doesn’t seem realistic to beat the sp

reading of the acronyms. Given the advantages, that’s not even necessary. Whatever

happens would have to be the choice of many other people, besides myself.

Languages and the Internship Rush

1 My father once told me,“Jean, I think you will need to know at least five language

s. All the top lawyers I know can speak at least five languages.”I was about seventeen wh

en my father gave me this advice, and I thought my father was exaggerating and didn’t pa

y much heed to his advice at the time. I told him,“Daddy, nobody I know

speaks that many languages! It’s impossible!”

2 I am currently in my second semester of law school and I am frantically applying

to summer internships with my peers. I want to work in the field of international law and

have been applying to organizations like the United Nations and the International Crimin

al Court. Whether they state it explicitly on their applications or not, fluency in a second l

anguage other than English is a standard requirement. If you do not speak another

language other than English, you can forget about a U.N. internship.

3 I was recently offered a job with a Boston organization that works with nationals of

developing countries in drafting legislation. While the woman who interviewed me told me she

was impressed with my resume generally, she was particularly impressed that I was fluent in

Chinese. She offered me the job immediately after finishing our telephone interview. Another

job that I applied for was for a German government organization in Beijing. While I missed the

deadline for this year, I received an email offering me an internship position for the following

summer. I do not believe that anything on my resume represented me as being particularly

qualified for the position—anything other than the fact that I had studied German in Munich

and had studied Chinese at Tshinghua University.

4 Even for regular law firm jobs, employers are increasingly looking for individuals that

speak several different languages. As business becomes increasingly global, any lawyer or

businessperson that is fluent in several languages is considered an asset. Growing up in the

United States, I never realized that languages were so important. I used to think that my

parents

were unique in the fact that they stressed learning languages while I was growing up.

5 As I’ve gotten older, my friends have changed and almost everyone I know these

days is fluent in at least two languages. I now realize that five languages doesn’t seem

so“impossible” and my dad was right after all.

6 I speak English, German, and Chinese. My French, which I took in high school, is

mediocre. When traveling in France, I can find my way around and order things at restaur

ants, but am nowhere near fluent. I want to continue improving my German language skil

ls and additionally learn another language in the next year. My father said speaking three

or four European languages in addition to two or three Asian languages would be ideal. A

To: Mr. BeamerFrom: Jack RollyDate: December 23, 2012Subject: Students’Study of EnglishDear Mr. Beamer,You asked me to submit a report about students’study of English in our college. I made a survey and collected information from the Students’Union, from some homeroom teachers and from interviews with a number of freshmen and sophomores. Generally, the majority of the students are interested in English learning. They hold that English is an important communication tool and is quite useful to their future careers. They have great determination to learn it well. But there are those who think they learn English only for the Pretco and CET-4 , that is, only for a certificate. Still others are tired of English learning. They mentioned two reasons. One is that they are forced to learn it, that they don’t like English and if they fail to pass English exams, they will not be awarded their diplomas. The other reason is that some English teachers are not lively enough when teaching their classes. Their boring teaching methods can’t arouse students’ interest. It is advisable to hire qualified teachers. Let veteran and experienced teachers be their mentors. College supervisors should often go to their classes to observe and to provide guidance. As for students, teachers should be more strict with them and give them more chances to practice English, help them to learn a good work ethic and to give more encouragement. What’s more, colorful activities in English learning should be used in teaching. Sincerely yours,Jack RollyDean of English Department
