The Aziz heard about the banquet that Zulaikha had organized for the women of the town. From that one thing was clear that Yusuf (as) was not an ordinary man. He was virtuous and temptation would not mislead him. So the best solution would be remove him from the eyes of the people so that the rumours would stop. 2 LESSON 11 – SURAH YUSUF – SURAH YUSUF VERSES 35-38 QUR’AN APPRECIATION

According to the ayah P Yusuf (as) was imprisoned along with two servants of the king, the older used to serve the king wine and the younger one would serve him food. It had been suggested to the king that the younger servant planned to poison him and the king assumed that the other would assist him. When Yusuf entered the prison, they asked him what is your expertise? Yusuf (as) said: “I interpret dreams” and explains that it is a gift from his Lord. He acknowledges that this is a gift and a blessing from God and that he hasn’t acquired it. God granted this knowledge because of his worthiness and sincerity of not following the ways of those who rejected God. Here he was referring to the people of Kan’an and Egypt who worshipped idols and practiced things that were against the teachings of god. He also informs them of his lineage, that he is from a honourable and pure family of P Ibrahim (as) who was the father of the monotheistic religions. His forefathers received divine revelations and these teachings were ingrained in him. This was probably the fist time that he tells anyone about his pure lineage. This proves to the people in the prison that he was honest and from a pure lineage and that he was imprisoned on false charges. One of the servants saw in his dream that he was squeezing (grapes) into wine. The other saw that he carried bread above his head while birds were eating from it, while he had not seen that. He seized the opportunity and before explaining their dreams P Yusuf (as) taught them about faith and one god. He informed them about the unseen and to establish that he was a Messenger from God Almighty and that he had knowledge of the unseen. We are all God’s representatives on earth and whenever we have an opportunity we should educate others about God. Imam Ali (a) says: An opportunity passes the way clouds drift away. It is important though to first recognize a good opportunity, and second to not misuse it. Yusuf (as) then explained to them about their dream: You will be killed and crucified and the birds will eat from your head (from your brain). The man then laughed and he said: I had not seen that. Then, Yusuf said, as Allah had narrated:

ب الس جن أما أحدكما ف يسق ي ربه خرا وأما الخر ف يصلب ي صاح ه ي المر الذ ي ف يه تست فت يان ف تأكل الطي م ن رأس قض

“O my two mates of the prison, as for one of you he shall give his lord to drink wine. As for the other, he shall be crucified so that the birds shalle eat from his head; the matter is decreed concerning which you

inquired." (12:41)

We have all been given an inner instinct and external guides and revelations that guides us to the truth. This is a blessing from God’s grace that He has guided us in order to achieve happiness and contentment both in this world and the hereafter. These verses also show that P Yusuf (as) practiced Tawalla (to love the friends of Allah and those who are with the truth and justice) and Tabarra (to hate the evil doers, and enemies of Allah and His Prophet). 3 LESSON 11 – SURAH YUSUF – SURAH YUSUF VERSES 35-38 QUR’AN APPRECIATION

One day when our 9th Imam, Imam Muhammad Taqi (as) was only nine years old, he was walking on the streets of Baghdad, when Mamun al-Rashid and his soldiers passed by. Imam Muhammad Taqi (as) remained there while the other children on the street ran away.

Mamun al-Rashid saw this, stopped his carriage and asked, "Young man, why did you not run away like the other children?"

Imam Taqi (as) replied calmly, "Neither had I committed a crime, nor was I blocking your way. There was no need for me to be afraid or run away. And I knew that you will not harm me if I haven’t blocked your way."

Mamun al-Rashid surprised at this mature response, asked, "What is your name?"

"Muhammad," was the reply. Whose son are you? asked Mamun al-Rashid. "Son of Imam Ali Ridha (as).

IMPORTANT LESSONS

1) Having a strong faith and conviction in Allah is important. You can introduce yourself positively and show your skills so long as you acknowledge that whatever you have is a blessing from Allah. You need to know your own strengths to be effective.

2) Seize the opportunity to spread good words and do good deeds. You may impact other people and change them.

3) Do not be afraid to be different from those who are on the wrong path. Allah will open other doors for you.
