Vimeo is a video sharing platform that was launched in 2004 by a group of filmmakers. Since then, the platform has grown to over 14 million members – most of them artists in film, animation, music and other works of art – who’ve been able to use Vimeo as a way to share and promote their work.

03Making Videos for Vimeo(1)

Enhancer: Vimeo will help you add a music track from its music catalog to any of your videos, many of which are free to use.

Video School: Vimeo has a section completely dedicated to showing you tutorials and lessons on how to create the best videos.

Music Store: Browse through all of the music tracks available that you can use with your videos and put them together using the Enhancer tool.

Creative Commons Videos: Vimeo has a section of users’ videos that are Creative Common licensed, meaning that there are certain ways you can use them legally for your own work.

Tip Jar: Vimeo recently introduced the “tip jar” for content creators, which allows them to accept small cash payments from viewers who wish to tip you in appreciation for your work.

Staff Picks: Every day, the Vimeo staff picks out their favorite new videos and shares them in the “Staff Picks” section. This is a great way to find those breathtaking videos that really deserve exposure from viewers like you.

Movies: Another new feature Vimeo recently launched is the option to watch full-length movies for a small fee.

Categories: If there’s a specific subject or video style you’re interested in, you can browse through the available categories to quickly stumble across something that might appeal to your interests.

Channels: On Vimeo, channels are created by members and used to showcase collections of videos centered around common themes. It’s another useful way to discover great videos according to your interests.

Groups: The community on Vimeo is strong and genuine, so Groups help bring members even closer. You can chat with others about videos and common interests by creating your own group or joining existing ones.

Couch Mode: Couch mode basically lets you watch videos in full screen. Sit back, relax and enjoy!

07Getting Started with a Vimeo Account

Vimeo Basic: You can sign up right away with Vimeo for free. You do, however, get a pretty limited selection of features and just 500MB of storage space per week for videos you want to upload. You can always upgrade, and the free account is recommended for starters who aren’t too serious about content creation just yet.

Vimeo Plus: A Plus membership is about $10 a month and a limit of 5GB storage per week. You also get unlimited HD uploading, no banner ads on your stuff, a bunch of other stuff that basic members don’t have access to.

Vimeo Pro: This one is for the professionals. It’s about $200 per year offers the most exquisite, high-quality picture for your videos. You also get 50GB of storage, no bandwidth caps, advanced statistics and much more.

09Vimeo vs. YouTube

Both sites are video sharing networks that allow users to sign up, upload videos for free, and participate in the community. In terms of viewing choice and connection speeds, these two sites are superior to any other competing services on the web.

Of course, both sites have different strengths and weaknesses. If you're a creative filmmaker, you might get better feedback and engagement from the community on Vimeo or better access with their premium business account option. On the other hand, if you're just a casual video blogger, uploading convenience or longer videos might be more of a priority. In that case, YouTube may be a better choice.

10Vimeo: The Pros(1)

Priority uploading: Uploading videos to Vimeo is already just as convenient as it is with YouTube, but you can get even better quality when you upgrade to a paid Vimeo Pro account. With a Pro account, videos are much cleaner and require much less bandwidth for viewing.

Video player branding: One thing YouTube doesn't have that Vimeo has is the ability to embed your own logo or image into the video player. On Youtube, the YouTube logo is always in the lower right corner of the video player, potentially harming branding ability.

11Vimeo: The Pros(2)

Analytics: Between YouTube and a paid Vimeo Pro account, the analytics platform on Vimeo is far superior. Some users feel that YouTube's analytics system is much too basic.

Community engagement: Vimeo tends to have more audience engagement  due to the focus on creative artistry, filmmaking and music. You're more likely to receive friendlier comments and make stronger relationships with users on Vimeo in comparison to YouTube.

12Vimeo: The Cons(1)

Lower traffic: Due to the simple fact that Vimeo is significantly smaller in comparison to YouTube, you're video views may be extremely limited.

Paid access: Although the Vimeo Pro features are outstanding, a Pro account still requires a fee to be paid. Not everyone is will to pay for premium features. If you decide against a Pro account, you'll be missing out on a lot of what Vimeo has to offer.

13Vimeo: The Cons(2)

Commercial restrictions: If you plan on promoting a product or service through a video on Vimeo, you are required to pay for a Pro account. If you go ahead and upload a commercial video on a free account, you risk having your video taken down.

Cap restrictions: Believe it or not, a Vimeo Pro account limits you to upload a maximum of 50 GB per year, with each video limited to a maximum of 5 GB. Even with a free YouTube account, you are allowed to upload an unlimited amount of videos, as long as they do not exceed 2 GB per video.

Sign-up Procedure for Vimeo:Vimeo asks for a username, password, email, location, and

gender.

Uploading to Vimeo:The Upload link in the upper right corner takes you to the

upload form. It reminds you not to upload anything pornographic, anything that you didn’t create yourself, or any ads.

Here you pick your file, add a title, caption and tags, and choose whether the video is public or private. You get a progress bar that shows the percent complete, the number of KB uploaded, the upload speed and the time remaining. It goes pretty fast.

Tagging on Vimeo:Vimeo enables tagging.

Compression in Vimeo:When your clip has uploaded, you are taken to a page with a

link to the video and a link back to the uploader, if you want to add more clips. If you go to watch the video right away, it will probably not be uploaded yet: they convert all uploaded files to Flash before making them accessible.

Viewability on Vimeo:All your uploaded videos are displayed in thumbnail form to the

right, from oldest to newest. The videos are not huge, but look pretty good and go smoothly. The play bar is right on top of the video, which is annoying, but if you take the mouse off it after pressing play it will go away.

Sharing from Vimeo:To share a Vimeo video, click the “Embed” link at the bottom of

the player. Two headings will come up. Use the URL under the first heading, “Link to this clip,” to link to your video in email or on other websites. Or, copy and paste the HTML under the second heading, “Embed this clip...” to embed the player in another website such as Myspace.
