From the chairman Die tweede uitgawe van ons nuusbrief is hier. Die eerste heen was goed gewees en daar is baie terugvoer gekry vanaf lede daaroor – baie positiewe kritiek. For one I must agree that I needed reading glasses (YES I do have a pair BUT I refuse to USE them) as some of the font was WAY too small. Eddy has received the feedback and I hope that this second edition meets with your approval, in any event let Eddy explain himself elsewhere. Howard arranged a breakfast run for us to Irene and the Voortrekker Monument, was great BUT turn out was disappointing for a meeting held in Gauteng, maar volgende keer lyk dit beter! Ander skoue was die George Motorskou – thanks Oom Jan Steenkamp for coordinating that, Keywest at Tarlton which was my baby and the Classic Car Show at Nasrec which Clive coordinated. During December 2012 and in January 2013 Ignition TV screened the TV insert they made for the Holland Southern African Classic Volvo expedition, a number of interviews were done and I hope that some of you were able to see it, once again featuring the Volvo Owners Club of SA, this is the 3rd time we have been on TV!! Dankie ook aan Howard wat dit moontlik gemaak het and of course Stuart Johnstone who has been instrumental in all three TV shows! The committee has also been to Clarens over the weekend of 15 – 17 March 2013 in preparation for the 2013 Saamtrek. More detail in the next newsletter. Volvo groete Loggies

My volvo storie – Rupert Geldenhuys

Goeie dag alle Volvo vriende My eerste ontmoeting met n Volvo was so bietjie meer as 39 jaar gelede op ‘n 544 Volvo se bonnet ,my doop foto waar ek in my mooi doop pakkie op n mooi bottel groen 544 se bonnet lê en net daar het die Volvo gogga my gebyt.

Soos die gesegde dan lui ‘Volvo For Life” dit is dan my “life” storie oor Volvos. Rupert Geldenhuys

Deon antwoord:

So gelukkig was ek ongelukkig nie.

From the desk of Eddy I received tons of feedback on the first newsletter and they were all VERY valid – fonts were too small, margins too wide, justification not the same and so on. I have taken it all to heart and I hope that this one looks better. [email protected] Fax – 086 684 2976

The Nederlandse Southern African Tour re-union – Howard & Liz bates Liz and I decided to fly off to Holland for the Southern African Nederlandse tour re-union. All but one of the teams was at the event and it was great to experience the camaraderie that a tour of such a nature builds. Autographed Clogs was just one of the generous gifts given to us

Something “different” to our way of life here in SA is cycling to and from a venue especially if a beer or two is on the menu. Cycling is one thing, but, cycling in the cold, the snow AND after have a libation or two is interesting to say the least. (Liz would not allow a picture of her on a bicycle to go on view). Every enthusiast has his/her collection of memorabilia, well, we visited Evert and Gerrie’s lovely home…..or should I say museum. Evert and Gerrie were the team with the dark blue Duet and hidden away is their other classic, a pristine cream 544. Evert has memorabilia, models, documents covering the history of Volvo, documentation and pictures of the extreme tours they have travelled. They have battery driven models, remote controlled models, one of a kind models, extremely small models. I can categorically say that Evert is an avid collector. Evert and Gerrie, along with Tim and Sanne were instrumental in organizing the Southern African tour along with cooperation from the Netherlands Volvo agency Broekhuis Auto. From greeting Liz and myself with flags on display, to showing off their “period office” in the corner of the show room with furniture from the day and as a finishing touch a 544 on show, to giving us a tour of the facility.

Next stop was to Hans and Helma’s house along with garage and hidden treasures. Yes, every enthusiast has his/her hidden treasure. Hans’ treasure, besides his black Amazon which did the Southern African tour, is an Alfa Montreal. A real beauty and wrapped up cosily in a heated garage no less. (No pictures of this car because this is of course a Volvo newsletter) Our next stop in Tim’s courtesy car was Ernest Hasselhof’s private museum. Collection of rare cars a late 50’s Amazon

An early 444

A complete running P1900.

The collection of models is endless and many of them extremely rare. Ernest also runs a workshop catering for the classic Volvos & his spares inventory is awesome. Thanks to Ernest and his wife Liz for showing us around. A big thanks must go to Tim and Sanne for taking care of us during our stay in Holland. Tim, in the chair at Broekhuis Auto has an environment friendly modification on his Amazon.

Yes you guessed it, a bicycle bell. Why? Well when one is working ones way through small country lanes in Holland and to ensure one doesn’t pollute the area with noise when approaching cyclists and/or pedestrians, a ring of the bicycle bell works. Not only do the cyclist/pedestrians move to the side they do so with a smile .

We were fortunate enough to meet up with the organizers of the Pan-American tour taking place in 2014 and the Nordkapp (North Cape Finland). Liz and I were initially planning on entering the Pan-American tour which is ±6500 miles and then we got talking about the Nord Kapp tour which is ± 8000km driving from Holland.

It is easier on the pocket and is shorter in days away. There will be an insert covering the basics for those interested in joining Liz and myself on this beautiful tour.

The 44th running of the Nordkapp tour 2014 The Nederlandse Volvo Classic Club is organizing their birthday/jubileum 44th tour to the Nordkapp (North Cape).

The circle route starts at Goteborg, travels up through Sweden, across the top of Finland to “The North Cape” (experience the midnight sun) then back down the coast of Norway ending in Goteborg Sweden. Included in the tour is a visit to the Volvo museum in Trollhatan. The tour is 4950km and 17 days. The ideal option is to ship cars into Holland, meet the team and travel with them from Holland to Goteborg. This option takes you through the top of Germany to Copenhagen and into Goteborg. This adds 3000km and 4 days to the tour in total. The Nordkapp Tour starts on the 24th May 2014 in Goteborg (22nd May 2014 in Holland)

Rainer Holtzberg : 16 Junie 1940 – 22 Junie 2012

Tjaart Coetzee

The life of Rainer Holtzberg (extract from FUNERAL letter) My brother Rainer was born in Weimar, East Germany on 16 June 1940. My late mom and Rainer arrived in SA on the 8th of July 1952 to start a new life. As many of you will remember him, Rainer was a very lively and ‘busy’ person, even from a young age. Rainer was thrown in the deep end in SA having no knowledge of English or Afrikaans. After finishing school with excellent marks, Rainer took up a trade as steam fitter with SA Railways. Here he excelled as well and became a master tradesman in all fields. After my father’s death, Rainer became my father. He unselfishly took over the financial responsibilities of a small household and generously, caringly looked after mom and me. He also took us on holidays to Cape Town. Never thought I would utter the following words but the high light was always traveling in his modified metallic silver Volvo 122 S, one of many to appear in future, an icon of a car in those days. I was the envy of all my school mates when he would occasionally pick me up after school and wheel spin away after my desperate pleading for him to do this. I experienced many a dice with him against Fords, Alfas, Mini Coopers and other until I was shaking with fright. It was what people did those days! During the last 12 months before he died, Rainer was badly injured in a nasty 2 meter fall from a ladder. He survived massive head and body injuries and once again made a remarkable recovery. I always marvelled at his energy levels after a heart by-pass operation during 1995. He was always as strong as an ox even as a slender built youngster. In ending, Rainer was always a good and caring husband to Lydia and a great help to her family. May you now rest in peace my brother and stay well clear of any machinery you may come across. Your brother Thomas
