Virtua commits to increasecolorectal cancer screenings

Virtua recently announced itscommitment to increase colorec-tal cancer screening in South Jer-sey by joining a national effortwith the American Cancer Socie-ty in the fight against this disease.

The national percentage of adults 50 and older who are up todate with recommended colorec-tal cancer screening has in-creased from 56 percent in 2002 to65 percent in 2010. By focusing ontarget audiences – newly insured, financially challenged, insuredprocrastinators/rationalizers,

African Americans and Hispan-ics – Virtua is in a good positionto achieve 80 percent screened forcolorectal cancer by the year 2018.

The announcement celebratesVirtua’s commitment to achieve80 percent by 2018; a shared goalled by the National ColorectalCancer Roundtable. The round-table was started by the Ameri-can Cancer Society and the Cen-ters for Disease Control and Pre-

vention in 1997.“Colorectal cancer is a major

public health problem. Adults age50 and older should be regularlyscreened for it. There are severalscreening options, including takehome tests,” said Kristina Thom-son, senior director of hospitalsystems for the American CancerSociety.

Colorectal cancer is the na-tion’s third-leading cause of can-cer-related deaths, but it can beprevented. Through proper col-orectal cancer screening, doctors

can find and remove hiddengrowths (called “polyps”) in thecolon, before they become cancer-ous. Removing polyps can pre-vent cancer altogether.

For more information aboutcolorectal cancer screening, visitwww.cancer.org/ colon or contactthe American Cancer Society at 1(800) 227-2345. For more informa-tion about the 80 percent by 2018initiative, visit www.nccrt.org.

chools throughout the area re-

cently celebrated National Read

Across America, an annual mo-

tivation and awareness day encourag-

ing children to read. While the Nation-

al Education Association marks the

event on March 2 – the birthday of

beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss – many schools turn the reading cele-

bration into a week-long affair.

National Read Across America,

however, goes far beyond March. The

overarching purpose is to create life-

long successful readers. And it’s our

job to help this purpose come to

fruition.

Start young. Read to your children

every day. According to the U.S. De-

partment of Education, 26 percent of

children who were read to three orfour times in the last week by a family

member recognized all letters of the

alphabet. Children who are read to fre-

quently also are more likely to count

to 20 (or higher), write their own name

and read (or pretend to read).

Fill your home with books and mag-

azines. Give your children endless op-

tions. The Educational Testing Service

says that the more types of reading

materials there are in the home, the

higher students are in reading profi-

ciency.

Perhaps most importantly, make

reading fun. The U.S. Department of

Education has found that the percent-

age of high school seniors who read

“for fun” is in decline, however the

more students read for fun on theirown time, the higher their reading

scores. Instill this lesson from the be-

ginning. Reading is not work; reading

is fun.

And don’t forget to be a good read-

ing role model. Pick up a book for

yourself, too. A child who sees their

parents reading will be more inclined

to read on their own, too.

Let’s help create a generation of life-

long readers.

in our opinion

Let’s encourage reading all yearNational Read Across America aims to turn our children into life-long readers

Your thoughts

How do you encourage reading in yourchildren? What are the best ways to makereading fun? Who are some of your kids’favorite authors? We would love to hearfrom you and share your answers.

not a typical bubblegum pop mu-sical like ‘Grease,’” Molotskysaid.

However, Molotsky said thestudents have been working hardand the public is going to see aclassic Broadway musical andone with themes still relevant

today.“It’s about a woman’s rise to

power and the politics of women’s rights and making sure

the workers get fairly compensat-ed, which are topics that are stillrelevant in today’s political envi-ronment,” Molotsky said.

Eastern junior Gary Bowman, who is playing the show’s narra-tor Che, agrees.

“It’s a really interesting con-cept to see how a girl that was putin so many different positionsand faced so much oppositionfrom the men that were above her

 just overcame everything they

told her she couldn’t,” Bowmansaid.Senior Alec Pizarro, who has

the role of Juan Perón, praisedBurton and Bowman, and said he

believed “Evita” would be one of the best shows Eastern Theatrehad produced in at least fiveyears.

“Gary and Bridgette are phe-nomenal, and if they don’t end upon Broadway I’m going to be dis-appointed in them,” Pizarro said.“They bring a stage presence thatI’ve never seen in a high school atall.”

“Evita” will be performed atthe Eastern Center for the Per-forming Arts, 1401 Laurel OakRoad, on Thursday March 17 at 7p.m., Friday March 18 at 7:30 p.m,and Saturday March 19 at 2 p.m.
