Despite some clouds in the sky, the students’ mortarboards stayed dry as the received their diplomas andwalked off the field toward their futures. For more photos, please see page 10. JUNE 24–30, 2015 –THE VOORHEES SUN 5

    By ZANE CLARKThe Sun

A significant portion of thepublic comment section of theJune 15 Voorhees TownshipSchool District Board of Educa-tion meeting was dedicated to oneparent’s attempts to get informa-tion on the investigation of a Ha-

rassment, Intimidation and Bul-lying incident she said took placeagainst her child.

During the public commentportion of the meeting, parentCynthia Kahn described how inMay, she called her child’s schoolto report a HIB incident that hap-pened to her child around the endof March.

Kahn said she believed stateHIB guidelines required an inves-

tigation of the incident, with thefindings brought before the boardat the next May meeting afterKahn reported the incident, which Kahn said did not happen.

Kahn also described having ameeting with SuperintendentRaymond Brosel Jr. and AssistantSuperintendent of BusinessFrank DeBerardinis, but believed

the incident was being “sweptunder the carpet” and it was “ab-solutely disgusting.”

With a report on the findings of a potential HIB incident on theJune 15 meeting’s agenda for ap-proval from the board, Kahn saidshe believed the law required thedistrict to release the findings toher.

hrow your hats in the air, pick

up a beach chair, put on a nice

pair of sandals and relax ...

    summer is here!

Life changes here in New Jersey for

    two-and-a-half months once school

lets out for summer recess. The kid-

dies are home, which makes us changeour normal routine. Traffic eases up at

    the typical before-school and after-

school rushes, and families head out of

    town for vacation.

We here at The Sun don’t take vaca-

tions. Well, that’s not true, but our ded-

ication to providing the best coverage

of town doesn’t waiver one bit. If any-

thing, summer allows us to focus even

more on the special people, places and

things that make our town so wonder-

    ful.

Every summer, the end of the school

year means the temporary end of school coverage – stories and photos

of students and teachers doing a com-

munity service project, of high school

sports teams and of noteworthy ac-

    complishments. But that doesn’t mean

    our pages will be blank.

True, summer often does signal a

    slowdown in “official” town- and

    school district-related business, but

there is plenty of newsworthy happen-

ings around town to keep your interest

    piqued.

Summer is a time when we often

reach out to you, our readers, for a lit-

    tle help.

    • Have an interesting story idea

about an annual summer activity you,

your family and/or your local group

partakes in? We’d love to cover it.

    • Know someone or something that

deserves to be spotlighted in a specialway? We’d love to write about it.

    • Take photos of you and your fami-

ly enjoying the warm summer weath-

er, either in town or on your family va-

cation? We’d love to print them for

    your neighbors to see.

Summer holds a special place in

    everyone’s heart, even if you’re not a

    lover of sometimes-oppressive heat.

Help us make this summer special by

keeping in touch, providing us feed-

back and helping us be the best paper

    we can. Enjoy the season!

    in our opinion

School’s out for summer!Stay involved this summer, and help us be the best we can be

    By ZANE CLARKThe Sun

At the June 17 meeting of theEastern Camden County Region-al School District Board of Edu-cation, the district gave a statusreport on its goals for the 2014-2015 school year.

The list of goals consisted of four objectives set by the district’sadvisory council, which includesmembers of the BOE, student

leaders, staff members, commit-tee members and administrators.According to Robert Cloutier,

director of curriculum, instruc-tion and professional develop-ment, the goals were increasingthe performance of students withdisabilities on state assessmentsin English and math, increasingthe number of 11th- and 12th-grade students taking at least oneAP exam and AP course, and in-creasing overall daily attendance.

    Regarding students with dis-

abilities, Cloutier said in 2013-2014, which is the latest schoolperformance report available, there was a slight improvementin math scores to 49.1 percent, butthe district still did not meet thestate target of 70.8 percent.

“The state has significantlymoved the target about 5 percent-age points each year, which is farsurpassing our improvements,”Cloutier said.

    For English scores in 2013-14,

Cloutier said the district was at78.2 percent, and although thatwas below the state target of 80.5percent, the district met the confi-dence interval and therefore wascounted as meeting the target.

Cloutier credited improve-ments in the English curriculum, and said for math, the district iscontinuing to improve on the as-sessments and benchmarks andhopes to fill a vacant special edu-cation position with someonewho is highly qualified in math.

For the second district goal of getting more students grades 11and 12 to take at least one APexam, Cloutier said the lastschool performance report had27.8 percent of students doing so,

which was a steady improvementbut still below the 35 percentmark the district set for itself.

For the third goal of gettingmore students in grades 11 and 12to take at least one AP course,Cloutier said the number wascurrently at 39.8 percent, justunder the 40 percent goal the dis-trict had set. Cloutier noted thatthis year about 800 students tookat least one AP course, and fornext school year, students with re-

quests for at least one AP coursewere already more than 900.

“This summer, we are sendingsix teachers to AP summer insti-tutes. In past summers, we’ve

only sent two teachers on aver-age,” Cloutier said.

Eastern Principal Robert TullJr. spoke about the fourth districtgoal of increasing attendance, and said the district was doing sothrough initiatives such as build-ing a “net” around students whomiss days, starting early in theyear and including conferenceswith parents.

For the 2015-2016 year, Cloutierspoke of a fifth goal to be added,

which would be research into anew bell schedule that wouldallow students to take eight class-es throughout the year by movingto a common lunch.

“Who can I expect to be givingme a copy of this, because yourattorney said not to call theschool because it’s supposed to gothrough him? So maybe someonecan address up there when can Iexpect a written copy of the find-ings of the HIB?” Kahn asked.

Board President Richard Nel-son informed Kahn that as shehad hired an attorney to dealwith the matter, she and her attor-ney would have to go through

BOE solicitor Howard Mendelsonand not the board regarding thesituation.

Kahn said the district was ig-noring phone calls and emailsfrom her and her lawyer, whichMendelson denied.

“We are in fact talking witheach other,” Mendelson said. “If he has represented to you that Iam not talking to him, that is notin fact true.”

Mendelson said the public BOEmeeting was not the appropriate

venue for the discussion, suggest-ed she was reading the law incor-rectly, and several times suggest-ed she speak with her lawyer.

In other news:• Board member Rich Wojdon

spoke regarding a MilestoneAward he received from the NewJersey School Boards Associationfor having served 30 years on theVoorhees Township Board of Ed-ucation.

Wojdon said while the awarddoes mean “something,” it was allthe educators before him and inthe district who meant “every-thing.”

“You are what make the sys-tem,” Wojdon said. “All we have todo is vote ‘yes, we want that per-son here,’ and seeing all of youstand here, I know we made aheck of a lot of right decisions.”

    • Jeanne DelColle of StocktonUniversity’s teacher preparationdepartment presented the districtwith the university’s gratitude forallowing Stockton teacher candi-dates to mentor with Voorheesteachers.

DelColle also thanked the dis-trict for doing so while simultane-ously dealing with several educa-tion reforms in the past severalyears, such as evaluationchanges, Common Core StateStandards and Partnership forAssessment of Readiness for Col-lege and Careers testing.

    • Retiring Eastern RegionalHigh School chemistry teacherMichael Harrison spoke beforethe board about concerns thatsome students weren’t entering

high school with a framework inmathematics skills necessary forscience classes.

One suggestion Harrison of-fered was to find a way for East-ern and Voorhees teachers tomeet and share feedback.

could think of from various coun-tries around the world.

Students dined on foods fromforeign lands, viewed student-cre-ated banners that illustrated fea-tures of various countries, marched in flag parades, learnedto say hello in different lan-guages, played games from differ-ent cultures and took part in allsorts of other multinationallearning experiences.

Signal Hill teacher DanielRiggs said the idea for the"Around the World in ThreeDays" event first came last yearwhen the school was faced withan unusually late school year, having been forced to close for somany snow days in the winter.

Riggs, along with fellow teach-ers Jenna Gallo and CheriseStankovitch, decided to collabo-rate and find a way to give thekids something to do with that extra time while still educating

them, and soon "Around theWorld in Three Days" was born.

“The three us just kind of brainstormed and thought wehave so many children in ourschool from different back-grounds that we might expose thechildren to the rest of the world,”Riggs said.

Riggs said another big compo-nent of the activities was stu-dents being able to take tours of the school and listen to fifth-gradestudent experts detail informa-tion on replicas of world land-marks that had been created byother students with the help of art teacher Kate Palumbo.

“Each landmark had a fifth-grade landmark expert who usedtheir own time outside of schoolto research those landmarks andprepare very interactive presen-tations for the whole school,”Riggs said.

Stankovitch said the event alsohad the added bonus of allowing

the halls to still be fun, decorativeand educational at the end of theyear where normally staff would

be taking everything down, in-cluding bulletin boards that hadquestions posted to quiz studentson their knowledge of differentcountries.

“Usually at this time of year,it’s really hard to get them tolearn any new information, sothis is a way,” Stankovitch said.“They were all engaged, excited, learning so much. They all wantto travel around the world and seethese places now.”

The school even had a largeworld map on the wall inside nearthe main entrance, with photosfrom trips children and their fam-ilies have actually taken.

“It’s neat to see where all thechildren have traveled, andthey’re quite traveled,” Gallosaid.

Principal Sharon Stallings saidthe event was just another waythe school could continue with itsmission to “Inspire, Engage andInnovate” with its students and

the ways they learn.“Our school is very diverse,

and it’s an opportunity for all of us to learn different things abouteach other,” Stallings said.
