What is a primary source?◦ Tim O’Brien’s book , The Things They
Carried was written about Vietnam about a guy who fought in Vietnam.
◦ It was published in 1990, after the war, but because it was written by someone who fought in the war, it’s still a primary source.
What is a primary source?◦ This photograph is of the terrorist
attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City, September 11, 2001.

What is a primary source?◦ This screenshot is of a news report.
◦ Because the news reporter is talking about something that’s happening as it’s happening, it is a primary source.
What is a secondary source?◦ Journey Across Time is a middle
school history textbook.
◦ The authors of the book didn’t live through everything (or anything) in the book, so it is a secondary source.
What is a secondary source?◦ This book by Howard Zinn tells about
the history of the United States.
◦ Zinn didn’t live through most of the stuff in this book, so it is a secondary source.
What is a secondary source?◦ This is a documentary movie called
“Baseball” from the 1990s by Ken Burns.
◦ Ken Burns did not play in Major League Baseball, and he wasn’t alive for much of baseball’s history.
◦ Therefore, this movie is a secondary source.
◦ (PS yes, I know it says 2009 at the bottom…this is an updated version that was recently released!)
