PARTNERSHIP

Page 2: Watoto Partnership

“Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need”- Matthew 6:33

From my twenty-five years as a church leader, to my role at Samaritan’s Purse and now as the UK Director of Watoto, missions has been at the centre of my heart.

Throughout all these years, I have sought to link leaders and volunteers together in networks of mutual support and encouragement. God has promised to add His blessing to such connectivity and yet we still work in isolated pockets, partly by design, partly by default. I am deeply passionate about effective collaborative work as we bring together our time, effort and resources.

For far too long I believe there has been an inherent sense of competition between different agencies. We seek to represent the heart of God on the ground, yet jostle for position when it comes to funding and PR. As we loosen our grip on agendas, whilst holding true to the broader vision God has given each of us, we can begin to explore how to capture God’s Kingdom purposes together. I look forward to all this might mean. Thank you for your consideration.

WELCOME FROM THE UK DIRECTOR

WATOTO CHURCHWatoto Church is a cell-based, community church located in Kampala, Uganda. With a weekly congregation of 20,000, Watoto Church is touching both the city and the nation with the love of Jesus.

Founded in 1983 by Gary and Marilyn Skinner (pictured above), today Watoto Church is planting multiple campuses across Kampala to transform the heart of the city.

Watoto Child Care Ministries was birthed out of this local church in 1994 as a compassionate response to the cry of Africa’s millions of children orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS.

Gary passionately believes it is the responsibility of the local church to solve community problems.

Currently, Watoto cares for 4,000 African children in villages where every child is raised in a family setting rather

than an institution. Their vision is that these individuals will be become future leaders of Africa.

So far, they have reached over 3,000 women through their Living Hope program, which restores dignity to vulnerable women through life skills, discipleship, vocational training and income-generating projects.

‘The local church, driven and led by pastoral leadership, must be a force that acts daily in the community and sees this as their redemptive work, as much as the work of a Sunday.’ - Gary Skinner

Here at Watoto, we are commited to working in a collaborative process which will mutually benefit all parties concerned. At the heart of this is a questioning process, as we explore the ways in which our projects and visions might overlap. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, this document is an invitation to dialogue in partnership.

For over five years, teams from Assemblies of God Central in Fraserburgh, Scotland have been partnering with Watoto.

The church sought a partnership that reflected their own desire to engage with people in body, mind and soul.

They raised the funds for a house, representing the ‘Body’, and classrooms, for the ‘Mind’, which teams from the church then came to Watoto to build. For the ‘Soul’ they financially supported the building of a Children’s Church in Kampala. Teams came to dedicate the new church, gifted 2,000 Bibles to children and participated in special children’s services.

All of Fraserburgh’s involvement with Watoto has been tailored to align with the heart of the church.

Recently, they invested in the development of a Worship Academy in Suubi Village, This was chosen in memory of Heather, the daughter of a

congregation member, to reflect her love of worship and support for children.

The project involved the refurbishment of classrooms for the Academy and a team travelled to Uganda to assist in laying new flooring for the dance studio.

At the close of the trip, the new facility was dedicated in a time of worship with both the Scottish team and the Watoto children. A copy of a plaque from Heather’s room, featuring angels in worship, was placed in the new facility.

WATOTO DEVELOPMENTWatoto Child Care Ministries is changing. Our care for orphans was initiated in response to a crisis situation. In the past few years, the number of orphans has been declining. We now have the opportunity to care for more children in their communities, particularly through empowering the nation’s women.

We envision our cell-group structure at the heart of caring for particular districts in the city, as Watoto works towards providing quality education, housing, medical care and employment opportunities for vulnerable women and young people.

This shift in focus provides a unique opportunity for new partners to be involved in supporting a specific region in their needs.

A partner might supply new housing for those currently in slums, support the Keep A Girl In School program, provide resources or support Creative Arts programmes in Watoto schools, build classrooms, invest in agriculture, provide tools for vocational training, assist in Sports Programmes, resource Children’s Church, fund counselling for vulnerable women and more…

ST SAVIOURS, SUNBURY-ON-THAMES

Since 2005, St Saviours have been partnering with Watoto. They’ve received choir concerts and sent teams to Uganda.

St Saviours are responsible for funding and building a number of houses. Their involvement reflects the range of demographics within their church. In 2011, alongside a building team, they took a team of women to run a week’s program with ladies from Living Hope, providing talks and pampering sessions. Younger female team members also chose to participate in projects with Baby Watoto.

Global Perspective Colin Agar, team leader, says, ‘Individuals are greatly impacted by these trips. I feel that it’s particularly important when we take young people to Watoto. As they come to understand how other children live, they gain a global perspective which transforms them.’

UNIQUE ELEMENTSWHAT WE OFFER

THE WATOTO CHILDREN’S CHOIR

Watoto Children’s Choir tour the UK for six months every year as ambassadors for God’s transforming love in the work of Watoto. The choir perform concerts in churches, schools and other venues and stay overnight with host families. It is an opportunity for those in the UK to be inspired by life transformation through the stories of individual children, and to be encouraged by their message of hope. The Choir provide a unique opportunity for partners to see, right here in the UK, the impact of their support in Uganda.

VISIT WATOTO

Visit Watoto trips are key to engaging and inspiring UK partners.Watoto have longstanding experience in facilitating visits to Uganda and we can take care of all infrastructure and logistics, tailoring trips to cater for the widest possible opportunity of demographic engagement. The majority of a team’s visit will be spent on a specific project chosen through discussions between Watoto and the organisations involved. All visits include a traditional meal with a host family, visits to Baby Watoto, our Children’s Villages, Living Hope and our sustainability projects, a Sunday at Watoto Church and the opportunity for a safari excursion.

Watoto, I am sure, can be a great tool for you and you can be a great blessing to Watoto.

Together, we can seek to build the Kingdom for the sake of His name.

Paul HouiellebecqWatoto UK Director

Watoto was planted with a mandate to change the nation. The vision for a church of 100,000 members spread across many campuses, is not simply for ‘big church’ but for a a big impact. Today, twenty years into Watoto Child Care Ministires, Watoto children are graduating university and returning to rebuild their nation.

I believe we can work together to inspire the UK with this vision for regional and national transformation. As we engage across organisations and demographics, we can connect individuals from different countries and cultures through partnership. Such relationship can provide the basis for incredible growth and benefit to all parties involved. We hope you’ll consider joining with us.
