THE FUTURE of an ecologically

sensitive wetland at Tugun next to

the Gold Coast Airport hangs in the

balance, as expansion plans gain

momentum.

A media spokesman for the

Infrastructure Minister Warren Truss, who

will have fi nal say over the development,

said the Gold Coast Airports Project

LIFT relates to the proposed expansion

of the existing terminal building and

apron parking stands.

This expansion is expected to cater for

anticipated growth in aviation demands

and to facilitate the operations of the

Commonwealth Games, the media

spokesman said.

In accordance with the regulatory

requirements of the Airports Act 1996,

the airport released a preliminary draft

Major Development Plan (MDP) for this

project for a public consultation period of

60 business days, which closed on 30

September 2015.

The spokesman said the airport

was required to give due regard to

all submissions received during the

consultation period before submitting

the draft MDP to Minister Truss for

consideration.

The airport has not yet submitted the

draft MDP to the Minister, he said.

In accordance with the Airports Act,

the draft MDP will be referred to a range

of expert stakeholders, including the

Department of the Environment (DoE)

for advice on the environmental impacts

of the proposal under the Environment

Protection and Biodiversity Conservation

Act 1999.

The Minister will consider the advice

received from these stakeholders when

assessing the MDP. Following the receipt

of advice from DoE, the Minister has 50

business days in which to consider the

draft MDP.

Meanwhile, Tweed Shire Council has

submitted a letter in response to the

draft Major Development Plan following

councils October 1 general meeting.

The plan identifi es the high ecological

value of vegetation on the site, much of

which is of state signifi cance, and will

result in highly signifi cant, permanent

and irreversible long term impact on

ecological values including endangered

ecological communities and numerous

threatened species, the letter reads.

Tweed Shire Mayor Katie Milne said

the airport had submitted a proposed

offset for clearing the bushland, but as

yet the airport has not revealed the offset

plan or where it could be applied.

While council does not have a decision

making role in relation to this proposal, it

is recommended that this vegetation be

retained due to high quality and sensitive

ecological signifi cance, she said.

under threat PLANS to expand the Gold Coast

Airport will mean an end to the long

standing Tweed Heads Pony Club.

Club organiser Lindy Smith said the

club has about 40 members and has

been operating for 37 years, but is now

earmarked for development.

Mrs Smith said she could not understand

why the airport was so eager to destroy

something that was impossible to reverse.

This area is vital for many species, but

theres also the Tweeds Class 1 fi sheries to

consider, she said. Reducing the wetland

water table would destroy vital habitats for

the fi sh and decimate fi sh breeding habitats.

Fishing is a major industry, sport and

recreation here, do we really want to

destroy that for an expanded set of retail

outlets or a carpark?.

Mrs Smith was joined by Greens MP

David Shoebridge and Federal Greens

candidate Dawn Walker in their push to

shift the devastation.

Mr Shoebridge said there was a better

way to expand the airport without impacting

the wetland.

A separate plan, one that would spare

the wetland, has been proposed, but its a

matter of cost and the cheapest option is to

destroy the bushland, he said.

Do we really want to look back and wish

we could have thought of something better.

drives people to our communities the

natural beauty.

HUNDREDS of Tweed residents took part

in a special walk to create awareness and

fundraise for research towards a cure for

Type 1 Diabetes on Sunday, 18 October.

JDRF One Walk host Karleena Bradshaw,

who has Type 1 Diabetes, said it was the

second year for the walk which raised

about $7000 thanks to local donations.

The walk took place at the Jack Evans

Boat Harbour from 10am.

Ms Bradsaw said Type 1 diabetes is a

life-long autoimmune disease that usually

occurs in childhood. It affects over 120,000

people in Australia alone.

Living with Type 1 diabetes is a struggle

every day, she said.

I have to count my food meticulously and

I have about four injections per day and

test my blood twice a day.

Ms Bradshaw said she wanted to reach

out to others in the community living with

Type 1 diabetes.

Im considering a support group in the

future to bring those people who need help

together - we want people to know theyre

not alone.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the immune

system mistakenly turning on itself,

destroying beta cells within the pancreas

and removing the bodys ability to produce

insulin. Insulin allows the body to process

sugar to create energy - without insulin, the

body starves as it cannot process food.

Tweed local and international advocate

towards fi nding a cure Tom Betts, said

most people know someone with Type 1

diabetes.

Mr Betts is the father of a child with Type

1 diabetes and said fi nding a cure remains

elusive and complex.

We have made leaps towards fi nding a

cure however we need a practical cure, he

said.

Stem cell research and production has

come a long way and while it remains

frustrating and thats why events such as

these are so important.
