ORDINARYTIM E: NOVEMBER20 TH - SOLEMNITYOF CHRISTTH E KINGThe Feast of Christ the King was established

by Pope Pius XI in 1925 as an antidote tosecularism, a way of life which leaves Godout of mans thinking and living andorganizes his life as if God did not exist. Thefeast is intended to proclaim in a strikingand effective manner Christs royalty overindividuals, families, society, governments, and nations.

Todays Mass establishes the titles forChrists royalty over men: 1) Christ is God,the Creator of the universe and hence

wields a supreme power over all things; Allthings were created by Him; 2) Christ isour Redeemer, He purchased us by His

precious Blood, and made us His propertyand possession; 3) Christ is Head of theChurch, holding in all things the primacy;4) God bestowed upon Christ the nationsof the world as His special possession anddominion.

Todays Mass also describes the qualities ofChrists kingdom. This kingdom is:1) supreme, extending not only to all people

but also to their princes and kings;2) universal, extending to all nations andto all places; 3) eternal, for The Lord shallsit a King forever; 4) spiritual, Christskingdom is not of this world.

Rt. Rev. Msgr. Rudolph G. GandasChrist the King as Repr esented in theLiturgy

The liturgy is an album in which everyepoch of Church history immortalizes itself.Therein, accordingly, can be found the

various pictures of Christ beloved duringsucceeding centuries. In its pages we seepictures of Jesus suffering and in agony; wesee pictures of His Sacred Heart; yet thesepictures are not proper to the nature of theliturgy as such; they resemble

baroque altars in a gothic church. Classicliturgy knows but one Christ: the King,

    radiant, majestic, and divine.

With an ever-growing desire, all Adventawaits the coming King; in the chants ofthe breviary we find repeated again andagain the two expressions King andis coming. On Christmas the Church

would greet, not the Child of Bethlehem, but the Rex Pacificus the King of peacegloriously reigning. Within a fortnight, there follows a feast which belongs to thegreatest of the feasts of the Church year the Epiphany. As in ancient times orientalmonarchs visited their principalities(theophany), so the divine King appears in

His city, the Church; from its sacred

precincts He casts His glance over all the

world... On the final feast of the Christmascycle, the Presentation in the Temple, holyChurch meets her royal Bridegroom with

virginal love: Adorn your bridal chamber,O Sion, and receive Christ your King! The

burden of the Christmas cycle may besummed up in these words: Christ the Kingestablishes His Kingdom of light uponearth!

If we now consider the Easter cycle, theluster of Christs royal dignity is indeedsomewhat veiled by His sufferings;nevertheless, it is not the suffering Jesus

who is present to the eyes of the Church as

much as Christ the royal Hero and Warrior who upon the battlefield of Golgothastruggles with the mighty and dies intriumph. Even during Lent and Passiontidethe Church acclaims her King. The act ofhomage on Palm Sunday is intenselystirring; singing psalms in festal procession

we accompany our Savior singing: Gloria, laus et honor tibi sit, Rex Christe, Glory, praise and honor be to Thee, Christ, OKing! It is true that on Good Friday theChurch meditates upon the Man of Sorrowsin agony upon the Cross, but at the sametime, and perhaps more so, she beholdsHim as King upon a royal throne. The hymn

Vexilla Regis, The royal banners forwardgo, is the more perfect expression of thespirit from which the Good Friday liturgyhas arisen. Also characteristic is the versefrom Psalm 95, Dicite in gentibus quiaDominus regnavit, to which the earlyChristians always added, a ligno, Proclaimamong the Gentiles: the Lord reigns fromupon the tree of the Cross! During Paschaltime the Church is so occupied withher glorified Savior and Conqueror thatkingship references become rarer;nevertheless, toward the end of the season

we celebrate our Kings triumph aftercompleting the work of redemption, His

    royal enthronement on AscensionThursday.

Neither in the time after Pentecost is thepicture of Christ as King wholly absent fromthe liturgy. Corpus Christi is a royalfestival: Christ the King who rulesthe nations, come, let us adore (Invit.).In the Greek Church the feast of theTransfiguration is the principal solemnityin honor of Christs kingship, SummumRegem gloriae Christum adoremus (Invit.).Finally at the sunset of the ecclesiastical

year, the Church awaits with burningdesire the return of the King of Majesty.

We will overlook further considerations infavor of a glance at the daily Offices. How

often do we not begin Matins with an act ofroyal homage: The King of apostles, ofmartyrs, of confessors, of virgins come, let us adore (Invit.). Lauds is oftenintroduced with Dominus regnavit, TheLord is King. Christ as King is also a firstconsideration at the threshold of each day;for morning after morning we renew ouroath of fidelity at Prime: To the King ofages be honor and glory. Every oration isconcluded through our Mediator Christ

Jesus who lives and reigns forever. Yes,age-old liturgy beholds Christ reigning asKing in His basilica (etym.: the kingshouse), upon the altar as His throne.Excerpted from The Churchs Year of Grace,Pius Parsch

    Things to Do:

Traditionally there would be a processionfor Christ the King on this feastday. TheBlessed Sacrament would be carried andthe procession would end with a prayer ofconsecration to Christ the King andBenediction. Try to participate if yourparish has a Christ the King procession. If

not, try having one at home (minus theBlessed Sacrament).

Read Pope Pius XIs encyclical Quasprimas (On the Feast of Christ the King)

which shows that secularism is the directdenial of Christs Kingship.

Being a relatively newer feast on theLiturgical calendar, there are no traditionalfoods for this day. Suggested ideas: a

wonderful family Sunday dinner, and bakean Easter Cake or King Cake in honor ofChrist the King..

A partial indulgence is granted to the

faithful, who piously recite the Act ofDedication of the Human Race to JesusChrist King. A plenary indulgence isgranted, if it is recite publicly on the feastof our Lord Jesus Christ King.

Commentary on the Readings for the LastSunday after Pentecost

. . .Then will appear the sign of the Son ofMan, He will send forth His angels with atrumpet. They will gather His elect from thefour winds (Gospel).

The world coming to its end! Such anannouncement would make all tribes ofthe earth mourn, especially him who clingsto earthly things and now realizes he mustnot turn back to take his cloak. Let us berealists: the world will dissolve, disappearin ruin!

The liturgical year comes to an end today. It is the symbol of the final assumption ofJesus Mystical Body into heaven, the lastact in an eternal drama.

May we flee from the false christs wholead astray. . .even the elect (Gospel),enslaving, misleading, corrupting theirminds, by the press, over the television andthe movie screen. REFLECTIONON TH E READINGSOF TH ESOLEMNITYOF CHRISTTH E KING YR. A_________________

    REV. F R. G ERARDO P. ARROYO, PAROCHIAL VICAR

We are now on the 34th Sunday of the Year in Ordinary Time. ThisSunday is considered as the ultimate Sunday in the calendar of theChurch. The Solemnity of Christ, the King of the Universe iscelebrated on this day which is considered as the continuation ofthe Ascension of Jesus into heaven. In the Ascension of Christ, wecommemorate his glorification as the natural completion of the

Resurrection. The Resurrection, on the other hand, is Jesusreward for His faithfulness in fulfilling the task His Father hasentrusted to Him. This task is to open the way to salvation for allmen. Through Jesus resurrection our way towards salvation wasinaugurated.

Originally, the kingship of Christ was associated with the Holy Weekand Easter. The kingship of Jesus was welcomed by the peopleduring His triumphal entry into the city of Jerusalem. On EasterSunday it was manifested and confirmed by the Father in raisingHim from the dead. Jesus won the victory over sin and death cameinto possession of His Kingdom by means of His death andresurrection.

Pope Pius XI I 1925 instituted a special feast in honor of Christ theKing in order to proclaim Jesus as king of all men and of the whole

universe. Jesus, however, has chosen not to exercise full reign overthis world until He comes in glory at the end time. To emphasizethis truth, the Church moved the feast from October to thisSunday which marks the end of the liturgical year.

The idea of Christ the King is familiar with us. Yet, Christ is verydifferent from the rest of the earthly kings. These kings have to wintheir kingdoms in bloody battles. Only the survivor isconsidered as a victor and king. But most of all, there is one thingall these kings have in common death is the end of theirkingship.

Jesus, however, is different from them. Jesus did not earned hisKingdom in the blood of a battlefield but through the blood of hiscross, as Paul wrote to his Christian converts in Corinth. Christsenemy was sin itself not any of the earthly kings. Through Jesusdied in the struggle it was He who was the victor not sin and death.

After his victory Jesus has shown that He is the most benevolenttowards his subjects. A close look at His kingdom, it is a kingdomoftruth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace, a kingdom ofjustice, love and peace. His death was not the end of his kingshiprather, it was its beginning.

A question, however, still remains. If Christ has already won thebattle for his kingdom and if his kingdom has so much good to offerpeople us for our happiness, why is it that many of us still fail toaccept Christ as their king? Why is it that the justice, love and peaceof his kingdom are not in great evidence in our world? The reasonis simple. Sin, despite the victory of Christ, still has power in theworld.

Let me explain it this way. During World War II, particularly in theEastern Theater, Japan received major and irreversible

setbacks from the hands of the US Armed Force that its arm forces were reduced into shambles; so, it was forced to surrenderofficially to the United States on Aug. 14, 1945. Although the warwas won by the United States, still some fighting continued to ragein some islands of the Pacific because of pocket resistance offeredby the enemy. In military, this is called mopping up operations.Christ has fought and won the decisive battle against sin and evil, and we His subjects are in the mopping up period.

We long, however, for the day when this struggle will be over anddone with so that we will enjoy the love and peace of Godskingdom. The second coming of Christ will mark the end of thistransition period. After this the perfection of the eternal anduniversal reign of Christ the King will be set in motion. In this feastlet us declare our loyalty and devotion to Christ the King. Let usalso renew our pledge to persevere in the mopping upoperations against sin and evil until the day when Christ will comeagain in glory to take full possession of his eternal and universalkingdom.

SVF PARISH YOUTH FORMATION 2011 - PART 1

    Kami nga mga Pamatan-on

Life is the biggest classroom kag isa sa mga naatubang ko ngaassignment amoang3-day Youth Formation sang November 11-13, 2011.

Huo, sa akon man. Pwede man nga, Pass lang ko anay ah, daw kabudlaygid abi. Pwede pa gid nga, Pulaw naman? Matulog run takon. (Basi magdaku pako! :D) Pero tungod ginpili ko batunon ini ngaassignment, kinahanglan koatubangon ang kabudlay kag mga sakripisyo bisan pa ang akonweakness simplybecause I have faith in Him kag palangga ko ang Parish Youth Ministry (PYM).Imhappy this way!

Ang mga na-eksperiyensyahan ko, in the middle of our completion of the assign-ment, nagpa-realisar sang kadamo nga bagay sa akon.

Bal-an man Niya nga ginhatag namon ang amonbest para matigayonini ngaYouth Formation.Labaw sa tanan, natun-an namon nga magpalangga,in the sense nga kinahanglannamon magsakripisyo sang amon oras kag iban pa gid tani nga importante ngamga buluhaton.

pamatan-on. Sa tanan pa gid nga nangin bahin sining amon kadalag-an, KAMILUBOS GID NGA NAGAPASALAMAT. ~Diana Rose Esman (Brgy. Cari Minor) &Dannisa Prader(Brgy. Buntatala)

I usually share my experiences as part of the Parish Youth Ministry every time Iwould encounter dialogues about service. At present, my presence may seemless and less visible, but I make it a point to know what I can share and of course, give the best I can. I feel the longing every time I recall the days when I would beon call for almost any activity in the Parish. My participation would always give methat satisfaction which money can never buy.

They say that in life, nothing happens by chance there is no such thing ascoincidence. This idea has given the inspiration to bloom where I am planted...not giving up what my heart longs to do - to serve my Parish. I opened myself toany opportunity to learn something new, to relearn something I have forgotten, andto be affirmed of the things with positive feedback. I feel that as a youngprofessional, I can really do something to inspire, to influence, and make peopleact.

Kon indi sila, sin-o? Kag kon indi subong, san-o? These were the questions thatdawned on me when I once read a tarpaulin banners on the wall of the JaroMetropolitan Cathedral. They carried reminders to all Catholic faithful in this Yearof the Youth. Technically, I belong to the age bracket of people called youth; that iswhy, I felt the need to answer the call. With my status now, I felt I can do more thanwhat I could do before.

It was one of those unusual Sundays (unsual becausenakapakita ako sa mgapamatan-on sa Parokya) when I learned about the planned Youth Formation forthe new core group of the Parish Youth Ministry. A desire, long-kept stirred me into

excitement. I volunteered saying : O sige, sige, sadya na! Manami ina.Ma-volunteer ko bala magfacilitate sang group dynamics. May nabal-an ako. Bagaygid sa mga youth leaders.

Well, I did not get any rejection (May ara gid man bala tani? Wala lang akokabalo.. hehe). So, I kept my plans with so much excitement to share with theyoung leaders of the Parish the tricks I have in my fingertips.

Hala! May mid-year deliberations pa kami ya gali. Sige lang ah. Kinahanglanmadayon gid ko ya. It is for the PYM. So, I texted Manang Zaza and everythingwas smooth... They were able to adjust the scheduling. We just knew how to bendand to be flexible (Amazing, right?).

Modifying some of the exercises from the two-day workshop I have attended,I facilitated the group dynamics for effective communication. Well, I am acommunication arts teacher so I felt joy of doing the something I normally do. Theactivities that were aimed at forming the youth leaders focused on an acronym

BJCCAL Body first, Jump in and save, Copy, Create new, Accept the offer, andListen. All these are important aspects to consider to achieve effectivecommunication that leads to a more active and efficient organization.

I feel that the pictures can speak of what the participants felt during the activities.More so, I know that they (the participants) can say a lot about what they haveexperienced. As for me, I am pleased to have the privilege of having shared ofmyself and for having facilitated a part of the formation seminar.

I have expectations of the youth leaders after what I have shared to them. Theyknow what those expectations are. Still, they must decide as they have the freewill to do. The actions depend on them. As for me, it is clear that I have donesomething and it does not end there.

As I think of the questionsKon indi sila, sin-o? Kag kon indi subong, san-o? I feelI am being pushed to journey with the young people. The youth is the future of thechurch and of course, of the nation. It follows that the quality of the church and of

the nation depends on the quality of the youth that are being formed.

pamatan-on - sila na gid.
