I do not find in the twelfth and thirteenth century Russian pictures any like transfiguration.

They display an elevated sense of dignity. They are entitled to find a harmonious place in the

midst of a rich religious ceremonial; but they do not stir the heart. They possess great decorative

value. They are often distinguished by excellence of what nowadays is called an architectural

quality that is to say, that in line and mass and colour they are well composed; but they seldom

touch the heart. With the coming of Rublv all this changes. A new spirit was abroad, which

affected fourteenth century Russian artists, and especially those of the Novgorod school. We can

observe them feeling their way to something that was not Byzantine. They began to be Russian, to

look with Russian eyes and to design with Russian ideals. Rublv incarnated this new ideal. It is

evident that his advance was accepted with pleasure by the class or group that employed him. He

rose into eminence. He was given large commissions; notably he was responsible for painting the

great Iconostasis in the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra. That large assemblage of panels has been

painted over by crude restorers; but one of them, which has been carefully cleaned, displays the

beautiful Old Testament Trinity to which reference has already been made. It shows us the

highest level of Russian achievement in dealing . 85

. 86 with the Byzantine tradition. In date it comes more than a century later than Duccio; for the

period of incubation in Russia was that much longer than in Italy. In both cases, however, the

same kind of inspiration breathes a breath of new life into the old dignified forms.

The influence of Rublv was powerful with his contemporaries and endured even after he had

been removed. Russian art remained what he had made it for nearly a century. Thus it came to

pass that the pictures of the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries possess a peculiar charm. They

stand out from the general stream of Icon painting as a group apart. It is much to be wished that at

least a few paintings of this group should find a permanent home in some public gallery in this

country.

The act of artistic creation must thus have been for these Russian artists more like that which

takes place in the spirit of a musical composer than in that of the Western artist. Like the musical

composer, the Russian artist stretched and moulded the inherited material to fit the peculiar

stresses of his personal feeling. And, indeed, there is something akin to music in the directness

and immediacy of these Russian artist's communications. Certainly the artists of the great period

of the fifteenth century, men like Rublv and Dionysius, seem able to realize quite new, and

altogether unforeseen discoveries of silhouette expressed in harmonies of a new and strangely

ethereal intensity of colour. Though the actual forms of Rublv's Trinity may be all derived from

Byzantine originals, they have taken on a quite new meaning; a more tensely concentrated

emotion seems to have imposed these rhythms and inspired these unearthly blues and ivory

whites.

Colour naturally plays an immense role in this art, where plastic values are reduced to a

minimum and where pure insensibly modulated tints are spread over large unmodelled areas. It is

by that and by the rhythmic sequences of silhouettes upon ivory or silvered golden grounds that

these intimations of a world of abstract and supernatural beauty are imposed on our imaginations.

Here, then, is an art which in its main characters is singularly free from all the mechanism of

representation, purified like music of all but its direct appeals to the spirit.

There is a certain satisfaction in noting that, coming to this art as we do without previous

knowledge, without traditional reverences and predilections, we almost immediately pick out those

pictures which Russians have always held in most esteem. After a short stay in the galleries of the

exhibition it becomes clear to one that Rublv's was, if not the greatest, by far the most persuasive

and outstanding personality. Two of his masterpieces were seen in the exhibition. One, the

Trinity, in a copy but a copy of such extraordinary perfection that one felt that little had been

lost is based on the story of the three men who came to Abraham. It has the authentic quality of

Es gibt in der Ikone des heiligen Andreas eine in den Gebarden ausgedrckte Handlung,

einen gegenseitigen Verkehr der Personen, der sich in der Neigung der Kpfe und in der Drehung

der Gestalten ussert, und zugleich auch eine bewegungslose, stille Ruhe. Dieses innere Leben,

das die drei im Kreise eingeschlossenen Gestalten verelnt und sich dem, was sie umgibt, mitteilt,

enthllt die ganze unerschpfliche Tiefe des Bildes. Es scheint die Worte des heiligen Dionysius

Areopagita wiederzugeben, nach dessen Auslegung die Kreisbewegung bedeutet, dass (Gott)

immer Sich Selber gleich bleibt, dass Er gesamthaft sowohl die mittleren Glieder als auch die

ussersten Enden, die zugleich Behltnis und Enthaltenes sind, umfasst, und dass Er alles, was

von Ihm ausging, zu Sich zurckfhrt. (ber die gttlichen Namen, . 9, 9, P. G., 3,

col. 916 D.). Whrend die Neigung der Kpfe zweier Engel nach dem dritten hin ihre Gruppe

vereinigt, sind die Gebrden ihrer Hnde zu dem auf weissem Tische wie auf einem Altare

stehenden eucharistischen Kelche gerichtet, in welchem der Kopf eines Opfertieres liegt. Indem er

das freiwlllige Opfer des Sohnes Gottes vorbildet, zieht dieser Kelch die Handbewegungen der

Engel auf sich und deutet die Einheit des Willens und der Handlung der mit Abraham einen Bund

schliessenden Dreifaltigkeit an.

Dass die Gestalten und Gesichter der Engel einander fast gleich sind, zeigt, indem es die

Einheit der Natur der drei Personen hervorhebt, zugleich auch, dass die Ikone kelnesfalls die

Absicht hat, konkret jede Person der Heiligen Dreieinigkeit darzustellen. Wie andere, frhere

Ikonen ist sie nicht die Darstellung der Dreifaltigkeit selbst, das heisst der drei Hypostasen der

Gottheit, denn die Gottheit ist Ihrem Wesen nach undarstellbar. Es handelt sich wirklich um die

geschichtliche Szene (wenngleich das geschichtliche Element hier bis auf ein Mindestmass

eingeschrnkt ist), die jedoch in der usserung der trinitarischen Handlung in der Welt, der

gttlichen konomie sinnbildlich die Einheit und die Dreiheit der Gottheit enthllt. Deshalb sind die

Engel trotz ihrer Gleichhelt nicht unpersnlich; bei jedem sind die Eigenschaften seiner Handlung

in der Welt deutlich ausgedrckt.

Die Engel sind auf der Ikone in der Relhenfolge des Glaubensbekenntnisses angeordnet: Ich

glaube an Gott den Vater, den Sohn und den Heiligen Geist087-1. Der vollkommenen . 87

. 88 Unbeschreibbarkeit der ersten Hypostase, der auch im Glaubensbekenntnis nur karge und

zurckhaltende Ausdrcke gewidmet sind, entspricht die Unbestimmtheit und Zurckhaltung der

Farben des Obergewandes des linken Engels (zartrosa Mantel mit braunen und blaugrnlichen

Reflexen). Der im Vergleich dazu ausfhrlichen und bis zur geschichtlichen Kundegebung (unter

Pontius Pilatus) gehenden Offenbarung der zweiten Person entspricht die Deutlichkeit und

Klarheit der Farben des mittleren Engels, dessen Kleidung durch die gewhnlich der

menschgewordenen zweiten Hypostase verliehenen Farben gekennzeichnet ist (purpurner Chiton

mit blauem Mantel). Endlich ist die Hauptfarbe des dritten Engels, das Grn seines Mantels, die

Farbe, die nach der Auslegung des heiligen Dionysius Areopagita das Junge, in der Flle der

Kraft sich Befindende bedeutet (Ib id ., . 15, 7), ein klarer Hinweis auf die Eigenschaften der

alles erneuernden und zum Leben erweckenden dritten Person der Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit. Die bis

in letzte Feinheiten durchgefhrte Harmonie der Farbenzusammenstellung der Dreifaltigkeitsikone

des heiligen Andreas ist einer ihrer hauptschlichen Zauber. Besonders eindrcklich ist die

ausserordentllch starke und klare, kornblumenblaue Farbe des Mantels des mittleren Engels in

Zusammenhang mit der goldgelben Farbe der Flgel, gleich reifem Korn. Der deutlichen und

klaren Farbgebung des mittleren Engels sind die weichen Farben der beiden anderen

entgegengesetzt. Aber auch diese Tne sind mit hellblauen, wie Edelsteine funkelnden Flecken

durchbrochen. Dadurch, dass dieses Blau alle drei Gestalten farbig vereinigt, scheint es die

Einheit der Natur der Hypostasen anzudeuten und verleiht gleichzeitig der ganzen Ikone eine

ruhige und heitere Freude.

087-1 Die Anordnung der Engel fhrte oft zu unrichtigen Bestimmungen, die manchmal in eigentliche Entstellungen

ausarteten. Zum Beispiel wurde zuwellen, sowohl vor wie nach Rublew, der mittlere Engel, der von den Ikonenmalern

augenscheinlich immer als Bild der zwelten Hypostase verstanden wurde, durch einen kreuztragenden Heiligenschein, die

berschrift Jesus Chtistus und eine Schriftrolle in Seiner Hand anstatt des Stabes gekennzeichnet. Vlelleicht als

Gegengewicht dazu und besonders auch als Widerlegung der in Russland auftretenden Ketzerei der Judaisierenden, die die

orthodoxe Lehre ber die Heilige Dreifaltigkeit ablehnten, erschienen, obgleich sehr selten, andere Entstellungen: Nicht nur

der mittlere, sondern alle drei Engel wurden mit dem kreuztragenden Heiligenschein versehen. Obgleich eine Auszeichnung

des mittleren Engels in den oben erwhnten patristischen Auslegungen ihren Grund findet, ist sie auf eine Darstellung

angewendet unrichtig, weil so der Name des Gottmenschen einem Bild gegeben wird, das nicht Seine unmittelbare und

konkrete Darstellung ist. Als das Wort Fleisch wurde, wurde Es. Jesus Christus genannt, sagt der heilige Johannes

Damascenus (De Fide orth., Buch IV, . 6; P. G. 94, col. 1112 BC). Was aber die drei kreuztragenden Heiligenscheine

betrifft, so werden hier auch die anderen Personen der Dreifaltigkeit mit dem Attribut der Leiden des Herrn versehen, so

dass Ihnen auf diese Weise eine tatschliche Beteiligung in der besonderen konomie der zweiten Hypostase

zugeschrieben wird. Die Frage der berschrift und des kreuztragenden Heiligenscheines in der Darstellung der Heiligen

Dreifaltigkeit wurde vom Zaren Johann dem Schrecklichen auf dem Moskauer Konzil von 1551 (das Konzil der hundert

Kapitel genannt) gestellt. Als Antwort darauf bestimmte dieses Konzil, dass dieses Bild so gemalt werden msse, wie alte

Ikonenmaler und Andreas Rublew es gemalt hatten, das heisst ohne Kreuze: und die berschrift soll lauten die Heilige
