A. Heavy trucks are the biggest trucks that are allowed on the road. In the UK they are known as lorries. Usually heavy trucks have three pairs of wheels: one at the front and two at the rear to enable heavy loads to be transported. Heavy trucks often pull trailers. They can be either full trailers or semi-trailers. A semi-trailer is a kind of trailer which has wheels only in the back. Driving a heavy truck requires a professional driver’s licence. Truck drivers are called truckers.

B. A traffic sign or a road sign is a sign put at the side of a road to give information to drivers. It can show people where to go or what to do. A road sign is something that gives information by means of a symbol, or in one or two words. It helps people in their vehicles on the road. Some signs include: Give way. Stop, Keep left. No U-turn, No parking. Zebra crossing and much more. Signs are very useful. Without signs and traffic lights there would be many accidents and arguments on the road.

C. Early civilizations used human power to move goods. The ancient Greeks preferred to travel and move goods by sea. But they also had a road system to move heavy loads by cart. The Romans built all-weather roads throughout the Roman Empire meant for rapid movement of troops and military supplies. It was also important for trade and the transport of goods. The roads were well built but needed constant maintenance. By the 16th century roads were used by coaches (public transport) and heavy wagons. For longer distances, teams of horses were changed several times as they became tired.

A trolley is a small cart with wheels that can carry things. There are different kinds of trolleys. There are shopping trolleys which are used in supermarkets and other large stores with self-service. In American English these are called shopping carts. Customers can put things they want to buy into a trolley and then pay for everything at the checkout. Usually they are allowed to pull the trolley with the things they have bought out to their car.

A seat belt is a strap that holds a person in his or her seat in a car, truck, plane, or other vehicle, so that he or she is not injured or killed by flying forward and hitting parts of the vehicle or being thrown out of it in an emergency. They help to save lives in car accidents. In 1946 a doctor in California designed better seat belts than were used at that time. In 1955 several improved seat belts were patented. Today laws require cars to have them.

Pippi Longstocking is a fictional character who originally appeared in a series of children’s books by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. The character has since appeared in several movies and television series. Pippi means “quirky” in old Swedish slang. She was named by Lindgren’s daughter Karin, who was nine years old at the time. One day Karin asked her mother to tell a story because she didn’t go to school. The first three Pippi Longstocking books were published from 1945 to 1948. Another series of six books were published between 1969 and 1975. Two final stories were printed in 1979 and 2000. The books have been translated into 64 languages.

A. The sunflower is a plant with a large flower head. The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 m tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. The sunflower is the state flower of Kansas. That is why Kansas is sometimes called the Sunflower State. To grow well, sunflowers need full sun. They grow best in fertile, wet, well-drained soil. Sunflowers commonly grow to heights between 1.5 and 3.5 m. The tallest sunflower confirmed by Guinness World Records in 2014 is 9.17 m. In 16th-century Europe the record was 7.3 m.

B. Olive oil is vegetable oil. It is made by getting the juice of the fruit of the olive tree. These are called olives. The oil is used in cooking, as well as cosmetics, traditional medicine, and as a fuel for oil lamps. Olive oil quality is defined by some parameters. People see it as a healthy addition to their diet because of the high level of unsaturated fats. Olive oil is popular in the Mediterranean countries. Spain has more than a third of the world’s olive trees, and is the top producer of olive oil in the world.

C. A refrigerator is a machine for keeping things cold. People put food and drinks in it, to keep those items cold or good for a longer time. A refrigerator has a heat pump. It takes heat away from the air inside the fridge. The heat gets added to the air outside. The heat pump is usually driven by an electric motor. There are also ice boxes available that do not use electricity because they are filled with ice to provide a colder temperature. The ice can keep things cold until the ice melts. These ice boxes can be taken on camping trips. Sometimes they are called coolers. Refrigerator-sized iceboxes were used before electricity was available.

For thousands of years, people have been using methods of preserving food, so that they can store food to eat later. The simplest methods of preserving food, such as drying strips of fish or meat in the hot sun have been used for thousands of years, and they are still used today by indigenous peoples’. Another ancient method is to use salt, and often drying and salting are done together. Food spoils because microorganisms change it. There are several basic techniques which make food last longer. Usually some of the techniques are combined.

An oil lamp was a lamp used for lighting by burning oil. Usually, it produced a flame by burning olive oil, or another vegetable oil, or whale oil (in the 1700s and 1800s). They burnt cleaner, with less smoke, than candles and other sources of light before electricity. The lamps were usually made of pottery or metal or glass. An old story in the 1001 Nights has Aladdin cleaning (rubbing the lamp) and making a Genie appear. Later in the 19th century, those lamps were mostly replaced by kerosene lamps.

Cricket is a sport which is played between two teams of eleven players each who score points by running between two sets of three small, wooden posts called wickets. Each of the wickets is at one end of a rectangle of flattened grass called the pitch. Around the pitch there is a much larger oval of grass called the cricket ground. The game started in England in the 16th century. Later, the game spread to the countries of the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it is a popular sport in England, Australia, the Indian subcontinent. South Africa, New Zealand, the West Indies and several other countries such as Afghanistan, Ireland, Kenya, Scotland, the Netherlands and Zimbabwe.

A mirror or looking-glass is something that reflects light. One common plane mirror is a piece of special flat glass that a person can look into to see a reflection of themselves or what is behind them. Sometimes, a flat piece of metal or the surface of water can act like a mirror. The reason you are able to see yourself in a mirror is because light comes in and gets reflected, and that’s how you are able to see your reflection. Some mirrors can have magnification properties, making images appear smaller or larger than their actual size. Special mirrors can make a person’s appearance look quite strange.

A magnifying glass is a lens which can be used to make things appear bigger, so you can see them better. It is used for examining small objects, such as post stamps. The magnifying glass consists of a piece of glass or plastic. It has to be held at the right distance between the eye and the object for the object to be in focus. The magnifying glass usually comes with a handle. A telescope is a more advanced kind of magnifying glass and consists of at least two glass lenses. Spectacles or eyeglasses also use lenses to correct a person’s vision.

A mosaic is a type of decoration using pictures and patterns made of little pieces of stone, glass or tiles of different colours. Mosaics can be used indoors on walls, floors and ceilings. Mosaics are sometimes used outdoors on pavements. Mosaics often last for a very long time. There are still plenty of mosaics which were made by the Ancient Romans. They can be seen in Italy, England, France, as well as in other countries that were once part of the Roman Empire. Nowadays mosaics are still used to brighten up public places in cities.

A microscope is a scientific instrument. It makes small objects look larger. This lets people see very small things. People who use microscopes commonly in their jobs are doctors and scientists. Students in science classes such as Biology or Chemistry also use microscopes to study small things. The earliest microscopes have only one lens and are called simple microscopes. Compound microscopes have at least two lenses. Microscopes make things seem larger than they are, to about 1000 times larger. This is much stronger than a magnifying glass which works as a simple microscope. There are many different kinds of gloves. Gloves are made of many different fabrics and materials, and are used in many ways. People wear thick gloves, usually made of wool or fabric, to keep their hands warm in cold weather. They wear thin gloves (usually made of rubber or plastic) to keep their hands clean. People also wear thin gloves made of rubber or plastic to keep things they touch clean. Some workers wear gloves made of thick rubber to protect their hands from chemicals. There are also gloves that are worn for fashion, because they look good.

The Solar System is the Sun and all the objects around it. The Sun is orbited by planets, asteroids, comets and other things. It is billions of years old. The Sun is a star. It contains 99.9 percent of the Solar System’s mass. This means that it has strong gravity. The Sun is mostly made out of hydrogen and helium. There are eight planets in the Solar System. From the closest to the farthest from the Sun, they are: Mercury, Venus, the Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. The first four planets are called terrestrial planets. They are mostly made of rock and metal, and they are mostly solid. The last four planets are called gas giants. This is because they are much larger than other planets and are mostly made of gas.

1. Part of an image2. The smallest unit3. Holidays4. Historical facts5. Hobbies6. Unusual use of money

Originally, the value of money was determined by the value of the material the money was made of, such as silver or gold. However, carrying around a lot of precious metal was inconvenient and often dangerous. As an alternative, banknotes were issued. In financial terms, a note is a promise to pay someone money. Banknotes were originally a promise to give an amount of precious metal to anyone who presented the paper. People could pay for things by giving the banknote, and thus the stored value (usually in gold or silver coins kept in the bank) that the banknote promised.

Two different decorations on each side of a coin might be used to decide things randomly. This is called “tossing a coin”. A person can throw a coin into the air and catch it. You then look at which side is facing up. If the head is facing up it is called “heads”, if the other side is facing up it is called “tails”. Before tossing the coin someone has to decide what each side means. Tossing a coin can be a type of gambling*, which is illegal in some countries.

Penny is a coin used by several countries where people speak English. This includes the United Kingdom, the United States, where a penny is worth one cent, and Canada, where “penny” is an informal term for one cent coins. Canada stopped issuing the penny in 2012. In British and American culture, finding a penny is often thought to be lucky A popular expression is "Find apenny, pick it up, and all the day you’ll have good luck”.

D. Some people collect coins just for pleasure, while others collect them for historical purposes. People can collect coins that are old, rare, beautiful or just interesting. Coin collecting is very old. Even Julius Caesar collected coins. Some coins are very expensive, because more people want them than there are copies of the coin. The condition of a coin is very important in finding the value of the coin for collectors. Some coins which are worth almost nothing in poor condition can be worth thousands of times as much in new condition.

E. Jewellery refers to any accessory that is worn as a decoration. In itself, jewellery has no other purpose than to look attractive. However, it is often added to items that have a practical function. Items such as belts and handbags are mainly accessories but may be decorated. Necklaces, finger rings and earrings are the most usual kinds of jewellery. Humans have made jewellery for a long time. There are many forms of jewellery worn for traditional, social or religious reasons. It can come in many forms, worn on any part of the body or clothing.

In the United States and Canada, public schools are schools that are paid for by the government. They are open to all students who live nearby without any charge. They are usually paid for through property taxes that are applied to everyone who owns buildings in the area around the school. Public schools greatly expanded in the United States in the 19th century. Every US state now has free public schools. In the United Kingdom, public schools are independent

A. Hawaii is a US state and the only US State which is in Oceania. It is the last state which joined the United States. Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959. It is the only state made only of islands. Hawaii is also the name of the largest island. The capital and the largest city of Hawaii is Honolulu on the island named Oahu. Hawaii is an archipelago, a long chain of islands. There are eight main islands and many small islands and atolls. They are the tops of underwater volcanoes.

B. Capitals are usually among the largest cities in their regions; often they are the biggest. For example, Montevideo is Uruguay’s capital as well as its biggest city. The capital city may also be the most important centre of commerce, as in London or Bangkok. However, a capital is not always the largest city in a country. An unusual case exists in Canada; the federal capital, Ottawa, is not the largest city in its province, Ontario, which is Toronto. But Toronto happens to be the capital of the province of Ontario. This way, Toronto is both a capital and a non-capital, depending on how you see it, as a city in a country or part of it.

C. John Smith was an English soldier, explorer, and author. Smith was the leader of the first settlements at the Virginia Colony in 1608-1609. He explored the rivers of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay and drew a map of the Chesapeake Bay area and New England. Smith’s books and maps were very important for the Englishmen living in the New World. He wrote, “Here every man may be master and owner of his own labour and land and if he has nothing but his hands, he may still grow rich.”

The New World is a name used for the Western Hemisphere. It specifically refers to the Americas. It can also refer to certain Atlantic and Pacific islands (like Bermuda) and sometimes Oceania. The name started in the early 16th century, shortly after America was discovered. The people of the European Middle Ages thought the world was only Europe, Asia, and Africa. These continents are called the Old World. The Americas were also referred to as the "fourth part of the world”.

The Late Middle Ages were the last two centuries of the Middle Ages, from around 1291 (when the crusades ended) to 1492 (Columbus voyage to the new world). During this period the gun changed war and aristocracy and feudalism became less important. States founded standing armies. Before, armies were only formed when there was a war. States only made their laws, money and identity the same in the entire country. Technology, economy and science developed. Cities were founded and existing cities grew larger and richer. France and England fought the Hundred Years’ War. The Grand Duchy of Moscow regained its independence from the Mongols, and under the name “Russia” became the most important state in Eastern Europe.

Gunpowder is a mix of chemical substances. It burns very quickly, and creates gases. Those gases use up more space than the gunpowder they come from, so they fly outwards. If the gunpowder is in a small space, the gasses create pressure. In a gun, the pressure pushes a bullet, causing it to fly out at high speeds. The pressure is not high enough, though, to destroy the gun barrel. Gunpowder was invented by the Chinese. The first references of black powder, which is a form

Ruth: Hi, Paul! Glad to see you! How are you?Paul: Hi, Ruth, glad to see you, too. Haven’t heard from you for ages.

Are you in a hurry?Ruth: No, I’m just walking around. I’m waiting for my classes to begin.Paul: What kind of classes do you attend?Ruth: Oh, it’s a driving school. I have finally made up my mind to get a

driving licence. I really need a car for my new job.Paul: Oh, I’m sure it’s a good idea. Have you got the car yet?Ruth: No, I’m just thinking about it. I haven’t chosen anything yet. I can’t

decide between a new and a used one. What do you think, Paul?Paul: A used car would be better to start with. Most drivers begin with

something you don’t really feel sorry for. Even if you scratch a door or hit it against a pole, it won’t be a great loss.

Ruth: I agree. But on the other hand it might break down more often, that’s why I am not really sure. How long have you been driving?

Paul: For about ten years, I believe. And how often do you have to attend classes?

Ruth: Three times а week. But each class is not really long. An hour and a half. I like it.

Paul: You said you were going to change your job. Have you done it yet? What is it going to be like?

Ruth: Oh, the same position — a principal assistant, but I will have to go to one of the schools in the suburb. You may ask me why I have done this. The salary is 30 percent higher and I think I shouldn’t have missed the opportunity.

Paul: Of course. I’m sure you have made the right decision. When are you going to start?

Ruth: When the holidays are over. Going by train is also possible, but I think it will be too tiresome and exhausting.

Paul: Oh, yeah. I had been commuting myself for three years before I started driving. It was a real challenge in rush hour. The train was packed full.

Ruth: I didn’t know that. Did you live out of town back then?Paul: I did. Then I rented a flat in the city for some years and now I live in

the suburbs again. You know, the air is much better there; it’s not so noisy either. Besides, I live in a house, which is more advantageous than living in a flat.

Ruth: I am just dreaming about my own house. I would even prefer a little cottage to a bigger flat.

Paul: When you start your new job, maybe your wish will come true. Don’t you think so?

Ruth: It might be possible, really. I’ll take a look at the real estate there.Oh, I am afraid I have to go now. Keep in touch!

Paul: See you, Ruth. Bye!

My family has moved here from Newcastle.Oh, really? My grandma lives in Newcastle. And how do you like the town? It’s so nice and quiet and welcoming. That was my first impression when we arrived.I like it, too. I’ve lived my whole life here and to tell the truth I don’t want to move away. But most likely I will have to when I enter a university. How long is it going to take us to get to London? Not less than three hours, I suppose. When we go by car with my parents it’s a bit faster. As far as I know there’s a speed limit set for school buses.Oh, that’s going to be quite a long way. What grade are you in now, Liz? I’m in the seventh year. What about you?The same with me. I don’t know all my classmates yet. And you must be from another class in the same year, right? You are right. Bob. We haven’t got any new students this year. Though, it usually happens. Someone leaves and someone comes. Last year there were four new pupils. It’s not a problem since our class is really friendly and we always welcome new guys to make them feel comfortable and reduce the stress.Frankly speaking I was afraid that I would have some problems in this regard. You see, I have never changed my school before. So it is a stressful situation for me. My dad had to change his job. He has remained in the same company but he has got a new position. And what does your dad do (if it is not too personal, of course)?Of course it isn’t. He is an electrical engineer at the power plant. It is a very responsible job. I believe he is working longer hours now than he used to, when we lived in Newcastle. Hopefully it is temporary. He is

Liz: My parents work there, too. That’s interesting. They might even know each other.

Bob: It may be possible, really. What are you going to do now? I would take a nap for an hour because I got up so early today. Do you feel sleepy?

Liz: Oh, no. I can’t sleep when I am on a bus. I would prefer reading but I am afraid it will make me feel sick.

Bob: OK. I can’t sleep either when the vehicle is moving. I’ve got a chocolate bar. Help yourself!

Now we are ready to start.

Steve: Hi, Helen! Haven’t seen you for ages! How are you?Helen: Fine, thanks. I’m so glad to see you. How were your holidays?Steve: My sister and I travelled around Europe for a week. But mostly I stayed

at home.Helen: Me too. I’ve got a new hobby. I started drawing in spring and I have

made quite good progress over this time. That’s why I didn’t get bored with staying indoors.

Steve: Oh, that’s cool, Helen. I wish I could draw, too. I am afraid I am too lazy to learn.

Helen: It does take quite a lot of time. Besides, the weather was not so fine to spend free time outdoors. It rained so much. And what did you do?

Steve: I had decided to stop playing computer games before the holidaysbegan. And I didn’t play a single hour in summer. Can you believe that?

Helen: So much the better, really. I can’t understand people wasting time on gaming. My younger brother likes it and I’m afraid he already has an addiction. But he doesn’t listen to me...

Steve: I rode my bike, too, of course, but not so much as usual because of the weather. Did you go swimming anywhere?

Helen; You are joking, Steve! The water must have been so cold. There were just two or three days when it was warmer.

Steve: Neither did I. How do you feel about starting the school year?Helen: Frankly speaking, I am a bit bored of doing nothing, but on the other

hand I don’t feel like getting up so early. That’s my only problem.Steve: I usually wake up much earlier than necessary. I don’t know why, but

most of my friends envy me. I am a bit tired of the holidays, too.Helen: Have we got any new subjects this year?Steve: As far as I know, there are none. On the timetable, at least. I thought we

were going to study Astronomy.Helen: I knew that the Geography course is over and I was sure there would be

something new instead of it. OK, that doesn’t matter after all.Steve: What about the textbooks? When are we going to get them from the

library?Helen: Tomorrow, I believe. By the way, I have got some at home. My friend,

Alice, has left them for me from the previous year. So, I don’t need to borrow all the textbooks from the school library.

Steve: Has the bell gone yet?Helen: No, two minutes are still left. Let’s go!
