A Parking Sign Redesign

Have you ever been aggravated when

you parked in an area with multiple con-

flicting parking signs that you really had

to struggle to figure out? I'm working to

make it much easier for people to know

when and where they can park.

I recently introduced a City Council

motion urging the city to pursue an alter-

native, grid-style sign that lays out a 12-

hour cycle where parking restrictions are

clearly written and understandable to

everyone.

Everyone who drives in this city has

had to deal with deciphering confusing

and complex parking signs. I don't want

parking to be a guessing game where

people worry about getting ticketed be-

cause they can't easily tell where they can

park and when.

You shouldn't need the Rosetta Stone

to park in Los Angeles.

In 45 days, the LA Dept. of Trans-

portation will present design proposals to

the City Council's Transportation Com-

mittee, on which I sit. I am confident they

will come back with new, simpler signage

that we can implement as a pilot program

first and later bring to the whole city.

Heritage opposition party Zaruhi Postan-

jyan submitted to parliamentary consider-

ation a package of bills on condemnation of

the genocides of Pontic Greeks, Assyrians,

Yezidis and other ethnicities in the Ot-

toman Empire, with the draft laws latter in-

cluded on the agenda of the Cabinet of

Ministers’ next session.

The government, however, suggested

instead declaring December 9 a commemo-

ration day for the victims of genocides, to

mark the United Nations Convention for

the Prevention and Punishment of the

Crime of Genocide adopted December 9,

1948. “Based on the abovementioned, the

government will consider the initiative ac-

ceptable in case its suggestion is approved,

with Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh

Kocharyan to be appointed as a co-rappor-

teur in consideration of the initiative,” the

government’s statement said.

nalist urges to keep the Armenian Geno-

cide issue on top of the agenda ahead of its

centenary in 2015, Tert.am said, citing Star.

In an article published in the Turkish

newspaper, Recep Güvelio!lu calls to cre-

ate favorable working conditions for Ar-

menian employment migrants in Turkey

and reconstrt the ancient historical city of

Ani.

"Armenians regard Ani as a religious

center. Ravaged for many years, Ani is on

the border with Armenia. Like the Holy

Cross Church of Akhtamar, Ani too, must

be reconstructed within a short period with

the involvement of international consult-

ants and foreign development companies."

"After the reconstruction, the town

must provide visa-free access to Armeni-

ans," Güvelio!lu said.

Turkey’s Prime Minister Ahmet Davu-

toglu stated that Istanbul’s Taksim Square

is the world’s ugliest Square.

Davutoglu told reporters that he is writ-

ing a book about cities and civilizations,

and which he will complete soon, reported

Haberoku website of Turkey.

He stressed that, in the book, he wrote

the section about Istanbul at the time when

the incidents were occurring at Gezi Park

in Taksim Square.

The Turkish PM also noted that he does

not agree with many people who say that

Taksim Square is beautiful.

“Taksim is the world’s ugliest square.

Taksim became a square by accident. If the

barracks there had not been dismantled, we

would not have seen a square there. In the

past, there was an Armenian graveyard

there,” Ahmet Davutoglu stated, in partic-

ular.

President Serzh Sargsyan today at-

tended the opening of a new building al-

lotted to the Special Investigation Service

of the Republic of Armenia (SIS). Prior to

moving to the building located on the cap-

ital’s 13a Vagharsh Vagharshyan Street, the

service operated at the building of the RA

Prosecutor General’s Office on a separate

floor with limited working space. The pres-

ident toured the newly-opened building,

familiarized with its working conditions,

talked to the staff of the Special Investiga-

tion Service about the need to perform their

tasks and functions to the utmost extent in

these new and favorable conditions and

wished the service success in its further ac-

tivity, President’s Press Office reported.

To mark the 40th An-niversary of its founding,the Society for ArmenianStudies (SAS) is holding atwo day conference at theMarriott Wardman ParkHotel in Washington, D.C.,on November 21-22, 2014.The theme of the conferenceis “Armenians in the Ot-toman Empire in the 19-20thCentury.”

Twenty participants rep-resenting different interna-tional academic institutionsare participating. There will be three pan-els in total. The first “The Contributions ofArmenians to Ottoman Culture, Society,Art and Architecture” will include paperson topics such as “Reconstructing theUrban and Architectural History of Ot-toman Armenian Communities: Zeytun,1850-1915” and “Reassessing CulturalTransformation in Early-Twentieth-Cen-tury Bolis: Armenian Contributions to aShared Ottoman Physical Culture.”

Panels two and three focus on “The Af-termath of the Genocide” and papers inthese two sessions range from “The Emer-gence of the New Wealthy Class between1915-1921: The Seizure of Armenian Prop-erty by the Local Elites in Aintab,” to“Naim Bey from Sis to Meskeneh. Testi-mony, Between Survivor Reticence and De-scendants’ Consumption Binge.” Some ofthe participants include Heghnar Waten-paugh, Ümit Kurt, Rachel Goshgarian,Murat Yildiz, Richard Hovannisian, AnahitKartashyan, Khatchig Mouradian, andNora Cherishian Lessersohn.

Chair of the Organizing Committee andSAS Vice-President Prof. Bedross DerMatossian said: “As we are approaching

the centennial of the Armenian Genocidethis timely Conference not only allow us tomark the 40th anniversary of the establish-ment of the Society for Armenian Studies,one of the most important academic organ-izations dedicated to Armenian Studies,but also to commemorate the ArmenianGenocide. Film director Suzanne Khardalian(Sweden) will be the discussant at a screen-ing of her film, “Grandma’s Tattoos,” aspart of the CineCulture Film Series atFresno, at 5:30PM, on Friday, October 24,2014. The film will be shown in the Leon S.and Pete Peters Educational Center Audi-torium, located on the West End of the SaveMart Center (entry at Shaw and WoodrowAves.). Director Khardalian makes a journeyinto her own family’s history to investigatethe terrible truth behind her grandmother’sodd tattoos and, in the process, unveils thestory of the Armenian women driven outof Ottoman Turkey during the First WorldWar.

During the First World War, millions ofArmenians were forced out of their homesin the then Ottoman Empire, into thedeserts of Syria and Iraq. More than a mil-lion people died in what Armenians de-scribe as a Genocide, although Turkeyrejects this accusation.

Everybody in the family seemed toknow the story, but no one ever spokeabout it.

Suzanne Khardalian is an independent

documentary filmmaker and writer. Shehas studied both in Beirut and Paris. Shehas directed several films, among others:“Back to Ararat” (1988), “Guldbagge”(Swedish Oscar equivalent) for Best Filmand a Red Ribbon at the American Film andVideo Festival. Other films include “UnsafeGround” (1993), the most frequently showndocumentary in Sweden, “Her ArmenianPrince” (1997), “From Opium to Chrysan-themums” (2000), and “Words and Stones– Gaza” (2000).

Turkish Intellectuals Who Have Recognized The Armenian Genocide

Cengiz Algan(born 1967 in Adana -Turkey) is a Turkishpolitician and ahuman rights activist.Grew up in Izmir andgraduated from GaziUniversity-Englishlanguage departmentand translated manybooks. He is the au-thor of many books(1). According towww.sabah.com.tr(6.22.2014), CengizAlgan is a familiarname in the Libertar-ian left circles inTurkey, and he is a Co-founder of the TheDurDe civic initiative “Say stop to racismand nationalism”, which is totally an inde-pendent organization and was establishedimmediately after the murder of HrantDink. DurDe has organized the commemo-ration of the Armenian Genocide in Taksimand its against hate crimes . DurDe mem-bers are active in the Armenian issue, theyoppose anti-Semitism and Islamophobia aswell, and defend the rights of all disad-vantaged groups (2).

As re-ported by Armenpress, this was publishedby the Turkish information websitedemokrathaber.com. The Spokesman of“Say stop to racism and nationalism” Cen-giz Algan reminded that the territory of theGezi Park in Istanbul’s Taksim Square andthe adjacent areas belonged to the Armeni-ans. “In 1560 the territory was presented tothe Armenians by the Sultan Suleiman theMagnificent as a token of gratitude for hislife was saved by an Armenian cook. A partof the park was occupied by the Armeniancemetery. In 1940s the Kemalist dictatorssnatched the territory from the Armeni-ans”. He expressed his hope that somedaythe Memorial dedicated to the ArmenianGenocide will be erected in its real place (3).

Cengiz Algan was one of the Turkish in-tellectuals who have signed an open letterto the Danish Royal Library, in response toofficial statements that the Royal Library ofDenmark has agreed “to balance” an Ar-menian Genocide exhibition by allowingthe Turkish government to mount its own“alternative” . The Turkish intellectualsmentioned that " Turkish government hasbeen suppressing historic truths and fol-lowing a policy of denial for more than 90years. The Turkish intellectuals have askedthe authorities "Not to Stand AgainstTurkey’s Democratization and Confronta-tion with its History(4)

Under the title "Is Turkey Overcomingthe Armenian Taboo?", Orhan Kemal Cen-giz wrote in ALMONITOT (April 22, 2013),"Turkey is changing from a country wherethe phrase Armenian question was nevermentioned to one where groups are march-ing in the street using the term Armeniangenocide". Orhan Kemal added that "Thechange of language of the announcementused by the Dur De “Say Stop to Racismand Nationalism” initiative, which organ-izes these meetings, helps demonstrate thegradual erasing of the Armenian taboo inTurkey. In 2010, the announcement of thecommemorative events began with the

words, “This pain is ourpain.” In the text, theevents of 1915 were de-scribed as "the great dis-aster," the Turkishequivalent of the phrase"Meds Yegern" used byArmenians. CengizAlgan, spokesman forDur De, said they re-ceived many threateningmessages despite that"soft terminology." Thelanguage became"clearer" over the years,and the number of threatsdeclined. On the 2011 an-nouncement, the title said

only "April 24, 1915." The text read, "This isthe date when the extermination of the Ar-menians began." The title of last year's an-nouncement read, "This is a pain of all ofus," while the text spoke of the tragedy ofthe Armenian people at length. The text ofthis year’s announcement is even more dar-ing. It begins, “We are remembering thevictims of genocide,” and it continues,“With the campaign of extermination thatbegan on April 24, 1915, the Armenian peo-ple were eradicated en masse”(5).

In a press release -Paris 19 April 2014, itwas announced that EGAM* and AGBU**Europe delegation of European Civil Soci-ety leaders to attend the Commemorationsof the Armenians Genocide in Istanbul. Theevent was organized by their Turkish part-ners DurDe! and the Human Rights Asso-ciation – IHD from April 21st to 25th. InTheir appeal they stated " In 1915, the im-plementation of a methodical and premed-itated plan led to the extermination of oneand a half million of Armenians in the Ot-toman Empire, in an attempt to destroy anentire civilization and to “Turkify” Anato-lia. The Armenian people were the victimsof a genocide which would soon serve as agruesome reference for others to follow.The successive governments of the TurkishRepublic have since fought to deny thedark side of the history of their country,and to make their people and the world for-get that the genocide ever occurred. Theyadded "Our shared initiative is one forrecognition, solidarity, justice, and democ-racy." Armenian Periodicals Exhibition Was Opened

In St. Petersburg

It’s a familiarstory to Armeni-ans: villagers sud-denly descendedupon by armedbandits and sol-diers filled withbloodlust, the in-nocents massacredwith a depravedsavagery. InMaragha, a villagein Artsakhfounded by Arme-nians who lefttheir village of the same name in Iran longago, a massacre was brewing.

Amnesty International reported that100 civilians were “slain” when Azerbaijaniforces were done carrying out their vio-lence. Not satisfied with just killing, the sol-diers had decapitated and burned villagers,leaving their unrecognizable bodies litteredabout the land, as attested by Baroness Car-oline Cox, who visited the village. Thenumber of deaths may not have been largein comparison to the thousands who diedduring the Artsakh War but the massacre atMaragha became the most poignant exam-ple of the brutality effected upon Armeniancivilians by Azerbaijanis.

Wasting hardly any time, the villagerswho managed to escape founded a newMaragha, appropriately named NorMaragha, not far from where the old, now-occupied village is. In the years since itsfounding, the people have built new homesand restarted their lives. They have bravelyremained near their old village, perhapswith a dose of hope that they will returnand undoubtedly with a bit of defiance.

To help further their cohesion as a com-munity, Armenia Fund chose to build acommunity center in the village. The rea-soning was that with a central place thatserved the diverse needs of the local peo-ple, Nor Maragha could once again be a vi-brant town.

Third Time’s A CharmIn a town reborn, Armenia Fund built a community center where

villagers participate in civic life, hold meetings and events, and

receive basic healthcare.

Watertown, MA: A gathering of ap-

proximately 60 business people and techni-

cal developers gathered at the Armenian

Museum of America (ALMA) to learn

about services offered by the Gyumri In-

formation Technology Center (GITC) in

Gyumri, Armenia. Mrs. Amalya Yeghoyan,

GITC’s executive director, outlined both

GITC’s training program and the software

and computer services offered to clients

worldwide.

GITC offers a 2-year program of hands-

on IT training to qualified applicants with

an existing background in computer sci-

ence, electronics, mathematics or related

fields. Students select a focus either on mo-

bile applications or web development.

GITC’s environment replicates a work en-

vironment with daily 7 hour attendance

and strict adherence to professional behav-

ior and dress codes. The second year in-

cludes a co-op program where students

work in industry gaining real-world prac-

tical experience. Over 90% of GITC’s grad-

uates find work in Armenia in their field of

study, and no graduates have left Armenia.

Students pay $500 tuition per year which is

only a fraction of GITC’s real cost per stu-

dent.

To support their effort GITC offers con-

sulting and software development services

to clients, focusing on web development,

mobile applications using the IOS and An-

droid operating systems, software devel-

opment, networking, and other services.

Currently GITC is serving clients in Arme-

nia, Russia, Germany, and the US. Com-

munication with GITC may be in English,

Russian, or Armenian via email, Skype, and

telephone. Yeghoyan indicated the per-en-

gineer costs in Armenia are significantly

lower than alternative offshore develop-

ment centers, and that GITC is committed

to high quality standards and to satisfying

its clients.

Yeghoyan’s brief PowerPoint presenta-

tion was followed by an 8 minute video

showing GITC’s facilities with testimonies

by students. A question and answer session

followed. The presentation was in English.

GITC was established in 2005 by the

Fund for Armenian Relief (FAR), the Enter-

prise Incubator Foundation, Shirak Tech-

nologies Ltd, and donors from Armenia

and the Diaspora to provide an IT infra-

structure in Gyumri and attract businesses.

It is now embarked on an effort to establish

a revenue stream to sustain its education

programs.

Additionally GITC, in partnership with

the Armenian Educational Foundation, has

reached out to schools in Artsaskh and Ar-

menia’s border regions with educational

programs.

Mrs. Yeghoyan’s visit to the US was

sponsored by FAR. Her presentation in Wa-

tertown was sponsored by ALMA, the Ar-

menian Business Network (ABN), and the

National Association for Armenian Studies

and Research (NAASR). ALMA’s director

Berj Chekijian, ABN’s founder Jack An-

tounian, and Yeghoyan’s host Joseph

Dagdigian offered brief introductory re-

Pasadena/Glendale Chapter’s

Athletics Committee held its an-

nual fundraising breakfast at the

AGBU Vatche and Tamar

Manoukian Center. The event fea-

tured a Middle-Eastern Breakfast,

prepared with the help of a group

of dedicated volunteers - Ani

Hamboyan, Salpi Bilanjian, Lara

Kejejian, Taline Boynerian, Vania Gordian

and Shahe Seuylemezian, former Chapter

Chair of the AGBU Pasadena/Glendale

Chapter. Their involvement was key to the

success of the fundraising efforts. With

over 400 guests in attendance, this year’s

breakfast was, by far, one of the most suc-

cessful events organized by the AGBU

Pasadena/Glendale Chapter’s Athletics

Committee.

This year, the committee chose Stephan

Kassabian, a veteran AGBU member, to be-

come an honorary member of the AGBU

Pasadena Athletics. Karine Yeterian, grand-

daughter of Mr. Kassabian, a graduate of

the AGBU Vatche and Tamar Manoukian

High School, and current athlete of the

AGBU Pasadena/Glendale Athletics, intro-

duced the honouree and talked about his

past involvement with AGBU. Mr. Kass-

abian started his association with AGBU-

AYA in Beirut, Lebanon in the 1950’s. He is

one of the pioneer members of AGBU-

AYA’s first Men’s Basketball team, an off-

shoot of Beirut’s AGBU Hovaguimian

Manougian Boys’ basketball team. Aside

from Atheltics, Mr. Kassabian has also been

involved in the AGBU-AYA Junior Theatri-

cal Group and has served on the commit-

tee of the Zareh Noubar Center from

1955-1957. “The efforts of the Athletics

Committee are truly commendable” stated

Mr. Kassabian. “Today’s turnout alone

should be an indication of the wonderful

programs we have here at the AGBU

Pasadena Glendale Chapter. I am truly

proud to be a veteran member of such a

distinguished organization”, he continued.

The Athletics Committee is a sub-com-

mittee of the AGBU Pasadena/Glendale

Chapter. The Chapter, chaired by Hrant

Vartzbedian, accommodates many other

activities and oversees various subcommit-

tees, including Scouting, the Social/Cul-

tural Committee and the Young Ladies

Committee. Athletics provides basketball,

volleyball and Futsal (indoor soccer) activ-

ities for Men and Women as well as boys

and girls of all ages

tee’s dedication is the positive response we

get from our youth. We are committed to

provide our athletes with the best possible

support, coaching staff and a positive envi-

AGBU Annual Pasadena Chapter Athletic

Breakfast

In May of 2014, 42 beehives were dis-

tributed to the Lichk community located in

the Syunik Region through the project

known as “Towards Eco-Community”.

This project was initiated by a young stu-

dent from a New York university named

Lia Soorenian and actualized with the as-

sistance and guidance of Pan-Armenian

Environmental Front (PAEF). Seven fami-

lies received a total of 6 beehives each along

with all the necessary equipment and items

needed to become successful beekeepers.

The villagers have already extracted the

honey from these beehives and this con-

cludes the first and most important phase

of the project. With the assistance, guidance

and direct supervision of a skilled bee spe-

cialist, for the first time some of the recipi-

ent families started practicing beekeeping

and acquired the necessary knowledge and

skills. According to the conditions of the

project, each family is required to donate

10% of their extracted honey to the Com-

munity Fund (newly created as part of this

project). As a community, the villagers

would decide how to allocate the funds. Al-

though the year was very unfavorable, and

much less than expected amount of honey

was extracted, the recipients of the project

unanimously voted to allocate 10 percent of

their honey to the Community Fund. They

also voted to allocate this year’s funds for

purchasing sports equipment, such as balls,

volleyball net, tennis equipment and other

items for the school students.

Such programs not only assist villagers

to return to working with their land but

also ensure constant and sufficient revenue

without harming the environment. Similar

projects can also assist restore the culture of

helping each other and making decisions

together in our rural communities. Many

people were willing to purchase the honey

from the villagers and as a result it is al-

ready completely exhausted. This experi-

ence showed us that it is also possible to

solve the issue associated with the con-

sumption of agricultural products that the

remote villages face.

We’re calling all who are interested in

helping the Armenian villagers to actualize

a project by befriending the residents of the

communities. We remind you that the vil-

lages affected by mining should be given

specific attention since they no longer have

the opportunity to make a living through

agricultural means. Since there is no gov-

ernmental aid, villagers have no other

choice than to work for the mines. In the di-

aspora there are young Armenians, such as

Lia Soorenian, who are studying at differ-

ent universities and realizing educational

plans and projects. Nothing is getting in the

way for them to choose a project in Arme-

nia and to bring their share of efforts to Ar-

menia. This can be one of the most effective

and result-oriented ways of strengthening

relationships between Diaspora Armenians

and local Armenians.

projects and initiatives.
