When Caroline Bancroft chose this significant title for her book, The Desert knows Me Well, quoted from a famous poem of the great Arabic Poet Al Muttanabi, she was referring to her close and long relationship with the Arab region, especially with the United Arab Emirates. Caroline lived in the Emirates for many years, and indeed knew, and loved, it's people and places, as her beautiful drawings demonstrate.

By publishing this unique book Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage is proudly sharing the special moments and feelings experienced during her stay in UAE, and saluting her profound craft in preserving through art some of the old places and sites, some of which no longer exist, but which still constitute an important part of the collective Emirati heritage and memory.

On the other hand, this kind of artistic expression reveals the mutual love and respect between the Emirates and people from all around the world; love and respect which became part of Emirati identity and its special stature in today's world, as one that cherishes heritage and welcomes change and progress at the same time.

حني اختارت ال�سيدة بانكروفت هذا العنوان "والبيداء تعرفني" الدال لكتابها،

والذي اقتب�سته من ق�سيدة معروفة لل�ساعر العربي الكبري اأبي الطبي املتنبي؛ كانت

ت�سري اإىل عالقتها الوثيقة باملنطقة العربية، ول�سيما دولة الإمارات العربية

املتحدة التي عا�ست فيها �سنوات عدة، وخربتها جيدا واأحبت اأمكنتها و�سعبها، مثلما

توؤكد ر�سوماتها الرائعة هذا. وهيئة اأبوظبي للثقافة والرتاث اإذ تن�سر هذا الكتاب

الفريد فاإنها ت�سارك بكل فخر ال�سيدة بانكروفت يف تلك اللحظات وامل�ساعر اخلا�سة

التي عرفتها يف اأثناء اإقامتها يف الإمارات، كما حتيي حرفتها الفنية العالية يف حفظ

بع�ض الأمكنة واملواقع القدمية التي زال بع�سها، ولكنها ما زالت حتتل مكانة مهمة يف

PREFACE

In 1979 I wrote the following after completing this work and dreaming of publishing it.

“Arabia is rich, not only in oil but in her history and literature. Her emergence into the modern world has been so rapid, however, that it is perhaps too easy to lose sight of her fascinating heritage, to find it obscured behind the skyscrapers, television and the fast pace of modern living. To keep a sense of history alive is a continually enriching experience, for we can learn much from our past.

None of the poets whose work I have used is living today and a number date back to the sixth century, but their philosophies show a simplicity and wisdom which time has not altered.

For seven years it was my privilege to live in the United Arab Emirates, and in the pages that follow I have tried hard to record my appreciation of the rich historical background of this fascinating country and her unique people. I would like to thank the Arab people for the warmth and hospitality they have shown me and for the inspiration their land and culture has given me.

My thanks also to Mr. Yasin Safadi, Head of the Oriental Manuscript Department at the British Museum, for his invaluable help in the research of the poetry.”

Despite changes in my own circumstances and in the UAE since then, these sentiments apply just as strongly as they did. Now in 2009 I am thrilled to have this wonderful opportunity to share my work thanks to the expertise of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage in producing this beautiful book. My dream has been realized. I hope that ‘The Desert Knows Me Well’ will be enjoyed as much as I enjoyed working for it all those years ago.

كتبت يف العام 1979 - بعد اأن اأجنزت هذا العمل وبداأت اأحلم بن�سره - ما يلي:

ل تـــزخر �سبـــه اجلـــزيرة العــربية بالثــروات النفطية فح�سب؛ بـل بالتــاريخ والأدب الثـــريني. لكــن رمبـــا جاء دخـــولها اإىل

العــامل املعا�سر �سديد ال�سرعة، اإذ كان من ال�سهل جدا عدم التنبه اإىل تراثها املذهل الذي توارى وراء ناطحات ال�سحاب وو�سائل

الت�سال احلديثة والإيقاع املت�سارع للحياة الع�سرية اليومية.

بيد اأنه لطاملا كان احلفاظ على ال�سلة بالتاريخ اأمرا حيويا ومرثيا؛ فهنالك الكثري مما ميكن تعلمه من املا�سي.

جميع ال�سعراء الذين اقتب�ست من اأ�سعارهم يف هذا الكتاب ينتمون اإىل هذين التاريخ والثقافة، وتك�سف اأ�سعارهم الغنية باملعاين

الفل�سفية ب�ساطة وحكمة مل يقو الزمن على جتاوزها.

كان من ح�سن حظي اأنني ع�ست طوال �سبع �سنوات يف الإمارات العربية املتحدة، وقد حاولت من خالل �سفحات كتابي هذا اأن

اأظهر تقديري لالإرث الثقايف الرائع لهذا البلد و�سعبه الفريد، الذي اأ�سكره من كل جوارحي على الدفء وح�سن ال�سيافة اللذين

اأظهرهما جتاهي، وعلى الإلهام الذي اأمدتني به ثقافته واأر�سه.

اأتوجه بال�سكر اأي�سا اإىل ال�سيد يا�سني �سفدي، مدير ق�سم املخطوطات ال�سرقية يف املتحف الربيطاين، مل�ساعدته القيمة يف

البحث عن الأ�سعار العربية القدمية.

وعلى الرغم من التغيري الذي طراأ على ظرويف ال�سخ�سية، وعلى دولة الإمارات منذ وقت تاأليف هذا الكتاب؛ اإل اأن م�ساعري

جتاهها ما زالت على حالها كما كانت عندما غادرتها. والآن يف العام 2009 اأ�سعر باأ�سد احلما�سة، وقد اأتيحت يل هذه الفر�سة

الرائعة مل�ساركة عملي مع الآخرين بف�سل اخلربات املتوافرة يف هيئة اأبوظبي للثقافة والرتاث والتي اأتاحت ن�سر هذا الكتاب

بهذه ال�سورة الرائعة. اأخريا حتقق حلمي، وكلي اأمل باأن يحظى القراء باملتعة نف�سها التي حظيت بها يف اأثناء عملي عليه طوال
