The rapid growth of the Chinese automotive industry in recent years has made China the world’s largest automotive market now even ahead of the US, and has created a heightened interest for global car manufacturers, all of which have a presence in the country.

Effective and efficient supply chain management has become a critical success factor to ensure low cost, reliable delivery and high quality. But the challenges in China are numerous, such as infrastructural and cultural barriers, and a lack of transparency and accurate information, just to name a few. Also the globalisation of supply chains has dramatically increased the competency requirements of professionals working in the field.

As supply chain management is a critical top management issue, having highly qualified professionals in the field is a necessity to remain competitive in the future. The automotive industry is here not an exception, where a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills are necessary to be an effective supply chain manager. The aim of our programme is to develop a new generation automotive supply chain managers that can effectively compete in the challenging environment of the future.

Admissions ProceduresApplications are reviewed as they arrive. Completed applications must be received 20 working days before the start of the course. Any applications received after that date will be considered on a space-available basis. FeeThe attendance fee is 98,800 RMB when registering before November 15, 2010, and 118,800 RMB after that. The fee includes tuition, case licensing fees, lunches, stationery, other course materials, and interpretation and translation fees if required. The full fee must be paid no later than 15 working days before the start of the course. Applications made within 15 working days of the start of the course require immediate payment. CancellationsCancellations or changes of a programme registration may be made without penalty at least 15 working days before the start of the programme. If a confirmed booking is cancelled within 15 working days of the start of the programme, or if the applicant fails to attend the programme, a cancellation fee equaling to 20 percent of the total programme fee will be charged. When a request to substitute participant(s) for the same programme is made less than 15 working days before the start of the programme, the seat(s) will not be guaranteed. If an applicant is unable to attend the programme, the applicant may transfer to a different session of the same programme or another CEIBS Executive Education programme within the same calendar year, but must pay any differences in fees between the two programmes. All changes and cancellations are subject to the final confirmation of CEIBS.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Ph.D. in Management, Purdue University, U.S.A.M.B.A., Arizona State University, U.S.A.B.B.A., West Texas State University, U.S.A.

Thomas E. Callarman is Professor of Operations Management and Director of the Center for Global Operations Management and Value Chain Integration at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) in Shanghai, P.R. China. He spent the previous twenty-five years at Arizona State University where he held several academic and administrative positions. During his last five years at Arizona Stat, Dr Callarman served as the Director of the Institute for Manufacturing Enterprise Systems while serving as Associate Professor of Supply Chain Management in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University (ASU). Previously he was Associate Dean for Student Support Services in the Graduate College at ASU. His disciplinary research interests are in process analysis and improvement in manufacturing, as well as design and modeling of supply networks, particularly in the electronics industry. He has published in a number of the top journals in his field, including Decisions Sciences, the Academy of Management Review, the European Journal of Operational Research, the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, and others.

Professor Callarman has received several research grants for the National Science Foundation, Intel Research Council and IBM Research Council to pursue modeling work in operations management and supply network integration. During his career, he has consulted with companies in the Fortune 500 in the areas of inventory management, lean manufacturing, lean supply chain and supply chain management with companies such as Motorola, Intel, Douglas Aircraft, etc. He has also worked with universities and corporations in Europe and Asia.

Dr. Callarman is certified by the Institute for Supply Management as a Certified Purchasing Manager (C.P.M., lifetime) and by the American Production and Inventory Control Society as a Certified Production and Inventory Manager, at the Fellow level (CFPIM). He has held numerous leadership positions in professional organisations such as the Decision Sciences Institute, where he is a Past-President, and the Institute for Supply Management, where he is Past-Chair of the Materials Management Group.

Dr. Lockström has previously taught graduate courses at European Business School, Moscow State University, Tongji University and China Europe International Business School. His teaching interests include purchasing, logistics and supply chain management. His research interests focus on global sourcing, strategic sourcing, process optimisation, outsourcing/offshoring and international management.

Dr. Lockström has published and reviewed for leading operations management journals, such as Journal of Operations Management, International Journal of Production and Operations Management. He has also published chapters for edited books on the SCM subject. In 2009, he won a best paper award at the International Conference for Operations and Supply Chain Management.

Dr. Lockström has extensive experience working on industry projects, such as market survey and analysis for Ariba, a Fortune 500 benchmarking study with McKinsey & Co., multiple procurement-related projects with BMW Group China, corporate training and benchmarking assignments with companies such as IBM, PriceWaterHouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, Accenture and Clariant. He is also advisory board member of the Indian healthcare company Synergia India.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Ph.D. in System and Control, Washington University, St. Louis, U.S.A.

Dr. Yilong Chen received his Ph.D. degree in System and Control from Washington University, St. Louis, USA in 1984 and joined General Motors R&D Center in Detroit. Dr. Chen was the pioneer of using robotics and CAD for concept car design in the world. From 1995 to 1998, he was also one of the pioneers in developing GM’s business in China. As the Chief Scientist and Director of Technology Development and Partnership of GM’s China Operations, he established and managed GM/Delphi-Tsinghua Technology Institute in Beijing and GM-Shanghai Jiaotong Powertrain Technology Institute in Shanghai. He initiated and managed technology collaborations with Chinese partners for GM. He also launched and managed the GM China Science & Technology award programme with the Natural Science Foundation of China. After he went back to US in 1999, Dr. Chen developed and managed technical collaboration with GM’s alliances in Japan. Dr. Chen received the GM President Council honor, which recognizes employees who represent the “Best of the Best” in terms of performance at all levels throughout GM. As a GM technical fellow, he led research in the areas of robotics, RFID and supply chain quality in GM Tech Centre. He also received the GM McCuen Award, which provides recognition for extraordinary technical accomplishments and their economic impact to the company. Because of his outstanding technical contributions, Dr. Chen was elected an IEEE Fellow in 1999. As a Senior Assistant to the head of GM R&D Centre, Dr. Chen also assisted in planning, coordinating and managing GM R&D projects, especially for exploratory/innovative research. Dr. Chen joined AIAG in 2006. Since then, as the General Director, Asia Pacific of AIAG, Dr. Chen has developed extensive relation and collaboration with Chinese government, organisations and automotive industry, and promoted auto supply chain standard and assisted AIAG’s member companies auto part import/export, sourcing and supplier development in China .

AIAG (Automotive Industry Action Group)The Automotive Industry Action Group is a globally recognized not-for-profit organisation founded in 1982 by a group of visionary managers from Chrysler, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors. Headquartered in the metro Detroit area, its member companies include North American, European and Asia-Pacific retailers, automakers, suppliers and service providers to the automotive industry. AIAG provides an open forum where members cooperate in developing and promoting solutions that enhance the prosperity of the automotive industry. AIAG's focus is to continuously improve business processes and practices involving trading partners throughout the supply chain. Under the auspices of AIAG, experts from all layers of the supply chain work together to make standard and to resolve issues critical to the automotive supply chain. The standards, such as Quality Core Tools and MMOG/LE which is involved in the courses, are all compiled under the auspices of AIAG. It can be said that AIAG is the most authoritative institutions in world for these courses. Also AIAG helps its member companies sourcing in China and helps Chinese auto suppliers to bridge their gap with global automotive industry.

CEIBS (China Europe International Business School)China Europe International Business School was founded in 1994 as a joint venture between the European Community and the P.R. China. Its objective is to further strengthen China’s integration into the world economy by providing high-level management training and facilitating the transfer of international management expertise to managers in China. Its MBA Programme has been ranked No.1 in Asia since 2004, No.8 worldwide in 2008, and its Executive MBA Programme ranked within the top 25 worldwide since 2005 by the Financial Times in its global MBA and EMBA rankings respectively. The BMW-SMI Centre for Purchasing and Supply Management and International Car Distribution Programme (ICDP) deliberately focuses on applied research in the automotive supply chain field.

SMI (Supply Chain Management Institute)Supply Chain Management Institute is an international research and training institute for procurement, logistics, and supply chain management. SMI was founded in 2004 when it became part of the European Business School (EBS) in Germany as chair for purchasing and logistics. Due to its close collaboration with the practice SMI nowadays has four own locations in Germany, China, India, and Russia and it is one of the few think tanks especially in the sourcing area for the global business community.

About the CertificateThe AIAG-CEIBS Automotive Supply Chain certificate is a quality stamp that will increase employability, accelerate individual careers, and improve managerial effectiveness within companies. It is issued jointly by AIAG and CEIBS and is promoted and acknowledged internationally. Certified participants will also have the chance to meet with automotive industry peers and leaders by attending organizers’ forums, workshops and other events.
