前言

在全球的學中文熱潮下，台灣因擁有繁體字的優勢及多樣性的文

化，提供了豐富的學習環境，「學華語‧到臺灣」勢必將成為外籍人

士學習中文的不二選擇。為此，本中心特別籌畫「水燈星願樂華語」

活動，藉此讓外籍人士有機會同時沉浸在學習華語和中華文化的圍氛

中。

我們誠摯邀請在台外籍人士到宜蘭來，跟我們一起歡慶中元，快

樂學華語。我們精心設計了各類型活動，參加者除了可享受華語學習

的樂趣，也能瞭解鬼月的傳統民俗，欣賞中華文化之美。最後，我們

安排了放水燈的民俗文化體驗活動，透過星空下施放水燈的傳統儀式，

所有的參加者都能期許自己一個明亮的未來，也向各地散播分享和祝

福，為歡慶中元畫下句點。

Foreword

Learning Chinese has been a trendy phenomenon worldwide in

recent years, and Taiwan with no doubt can be at the top of foreign

nationals’ choices as it provides a rich environment full of traditional

Chinese and diverse cultures. Thus, with the purpose of helping foreign

nationals immerse themselves in Chinese language and culture, CLIC

holds the event ‘A Starry Night with Floating Wish Lanterns and Fun

Chinese.’

With heart, we invite foreign nationals to join us in Yilan to

celebrate the Ghost Festival and learn Chinese. Through all the activities

particularly designed for the event, we believe participants will have great

fun with Chinese. Meanwhile, they are able to learn about the Ghost

Month tradition and appreciate the culture. Finally, the festival

celebration ends with a personal cultural experience of floating water

wish lanterns in the night, in which participants wish themselves a bright

future and spread blessings out to the world.

從歷史記載來看，在台灣、中國的福建、廣東這些地方把農曆七月叫做鬼月，

七月初一開鬼門，七月三十關鬼門，大家準備豐盛的食物祭拜孤魂野鬼。為了避

免把這些孤魂野鬼帶到家裡來，因此，在這個月當中閩南人不結婚、不祝壽、不

搬家也不辦各種喜事。根據這些習俗，《閩南人》一書的作者林再復認為，鬼月

的說法來自閩南。

影響所及，現在每到農曆七月，在台灣各地都可以看到普渡的景象，基隆、

宜蘭的放水燈活動更是遠近馳名，此外，香港與東南亞的華人也普遍地參與相關

活動，體現出華人文化中慈悲為懷、推己及人的精神。

According to the historical record, the seventh lunar month is called the ghost

month by people from Taiwan, Fu-chien and Guang-dong in China. People prepare

rich offerings to worship wondering spirits/ghosts. For to avoid bringing the

wondering ghosts home, the Hoklo (people from southern Fu-jien) did not get married,

did not offer birthday congratulation, did not move to new house and did not hold any

party during this period of time. According to the custom, the author of

“Min-nan-Ren(People of Southern Fu-jien)” thought, the concepts of ghost month

came from southern Fu-jien.

With the effect of it, you can see Pudu rite held everywhere in Taiwan during the

seventh lunar month. The rites of floating water lanterns in Keelung and I-Lan are

also famous. Besides, Chinese society in Hong Kong and South-eastern Asia also

participate broadly related activities showing the spirit of compassion and reciprocity

in Chinese culture.

直到日本統治台灣的期間，仍然延續這項傳統。當時，在農曆六月三十日晚上進

行放水燈的活動，場面非常盛大，放了水燈以後，宜蘭城分成七個地方輪流普渡，

每個地方的人都花大錢準備了豐盛的食物，就怕比不上別人，熱鬧的景象可以說

是全台灣第一。

跟日本的戰爭結束以後，政府雖然認為普渡是一種不好的風俗而想要禁止，

不過宜蘭人仍然每年放水燈並且舉行普渡，一直到 1987 年以後，政府的態度才

改變，不但開始重視傳統民俗而且訂了獎勵的辦法，民間也成立協會推廣這項活

動，希望把活動的精神傳承下去。2009 年，宜蘭縣政府根據文化資產保存法，

正式將「宜蘭放水燈」定為宜蘭縣重要民俗文化活動。

Ever since the Ching(Qing) Dynasty, putting lanterns on water remained one of

the most important religious folk activities in the seventh lunar month in I-Lan.

During the Japanese colonial period this tradition remained. The activity of putting

lanterns on water at the night of the thirtieth of the sixth lunar month was a

magnificent occasion. The whole I-Lan city was divided into seven districts and all

seven of them took turns to proceed the Pudu rite afterward. Each district spent a lot

of money on preparing for the offerings to compete with others. The occasion bustling

with noise and excitement could be seen as the most interesting in Taiwan.

After the end of WWII, although the Pudu rite was considered as a bad custom

by the government and intended to forbid it, people from I-Lan still put Lanterns on

Water each year and hold the Pudu rite. The government’s attitude changed since

1987. From that on, the government started to appreciate traditional custom and set

the incentives. Associations were also established by non-governmental organization

hoping to pass the spirit on. The I-Lan county government had defined “Floating

Water Lanterns in I-Lan” as an important folk cultural activity complying with the

Cultural Heritage Reservation Act.

一、宜蘭城的歷史 History of Yilan

1810 年，宜蘭正式放在清朝的地圖裡。那時候的名字叫噶瑪蘭廳。從 1811

年開始建城。宜蘭城的中心是 1808年建的媽祖廟-昭應宮。四個城門本來的名字

是東門、西門、南門、北門，後來在 1838年，因為修建了新的城門，所以給了

城門新的名字。東門的名字是震平門，西門的名字是兌安門，南門的名字是離順

門，北門的名字是崁興門，把四個城門名字中的第二個字拿出來，放在一起有平

安順興的意思。

到了 1913年，因為新的城市計畫，舊的宜蘭城牆被拆了。不過，看看現在

的宜蘭地圖，你還是可以看到以前宜蘭舊城的痕跡。

yílán chéngqiáng bèi chāi le。búguò，kàn kàn xiànzài de yílán dìtú，nǐ háishì kěyǐ

kàndào yǐqián yílán jiù chéng de hénjī。

In 1810, Yilan was incorporated into the domain of the Qing Dynasty. The city

was called Kavalan at that time. The construction of the city began in 1811. The

center of the city was Mazu Temple - Zhouying Temple which was built in 1808. The

names of the four gates surrounded the city were East, West, South, North. However,

due to the new construction in 1838, all the four gates were given new names. The

East changed to Zhenping, the West changed to Duian, the South changed Lishun and

the North changed Kanxing. If you put all the second characters from each name

together, it means peace, success and prosperity.

The city walls were taken down in 1913 due to the new urban plan.

However, if you look at the current map, you still can see the trace of the old Yilan.

告訴好兄弟這裡有好吃的東西要送給他們。希望他們在這一個月裡，可以在過得

很好。在放水燈以前，你可以寫上祝福的話跟你的名字。人們相信自己做的水燈

可以漂得越遠，自己的運氣會越好。今天晚上放水燈的時候，你可以看看自己的

眾生就是一切有生命的動物和人。「普渡眾生」本來是佛教的話，意思是讓

大家離開痛苦，快樂一點，如果把人生當作痛苦的海，就讓他們離開苦海，到達

快樂的岸上。

農曆七月的時候，用供品祭拜沒人祭拜的孤魂野鬼，這就是普渡，也是民間

信仰的中元節拜拜。

在佛教中，普渡的意思，有很多不同的層次與意義，運用佛法讓所有的眾生

都能夠遠離痛苦得到快樂，把煩惱丟掉，自由自在地生活，這才是真正的「普渡」。

不管眾生現在需不需要、信不信佛、修不修行，佛法的大門永遠為一切眾生打開

著，這就是佛教中普渡的意義。

簡單地說，不論民間信仰或宗教意義，對一切眾生抱著分享和祝福的心，讓

大家遠離煩惱，快快樂樂地生活，這就是「普渡眾生」。

Sattva means all the living creatures. Pudo the sattva is a Buddhist term. It means

to rescue creatures from their sufferingand to let them have happiness. If life is full of

hardships, then Pudu is the means to keep all living creatures away from the hardship

and to help them to find happiness.

To worship the wandering spirits with offerings in the seventh lunar month is

Pudu. This is also known as Zhongyuan Festival in thelocal folklore.

According to Buddhism, Pudu has a lot of meanings. Helping all living creatures

stop suffering and gain happiness, to leave the anguish and live freely. This is the real

meaning of Pudu. The door of Buddhism is always open to those who do or do not

need, who do or do not believe in Buddhism and those who do or do not practice the

religion. This is the true meaning of Pudu in Buddhism.

Put simply, no matter what philosophy or religion you believe in, helping

everyone, sharing with everyone, wishing the best for everyone and livinghappily

away from hardships is called Pudu the sattva.

Every seventh lunar month is considered as the ghost month. People offering

grand feasts with plenty of food for the ghosts and are afraid of being approached

by the ghosts at the same time. Therefore the whole month is considered as a

period of time during which nothing could be done: neither getting married,

purchasing new houses or cars, nor even move to a new place. Some even avoid

going by the sea or having a medical operation for not breaking the taboo of the

ghost month. Some believe that you can’t process rite of worshiping the ghosts

(Our Brothers) inside your own house or they will remain and never leave. It is

also believed that fruits such as pineapples, bananas, plums and pears are not

suitable to be used as offerings for worshiping the ghosts since with all of them

putting together means an invitation for the ghosts to enter the house.

The dates of all the most important traditional festivals are based on the

lunar calendar.

In Taiwan, not only the farmers do everything according to the lunar

calendar, also the dates of wedding and houseremoval are used to be

decided according to the lunar calendar. The importance of lunar calendar

goes without saying.

(2) 結婚(ㄐㄧㄝˊ ㄏㄨㄣ) ( jiéhūn ) (VO) get married

傳統觀念認為「男大當婚，女大當嫁」，不過，對現代人來說，結不結

婚無所謂，只要日子過得快樂就好了。

It is traditionally considered that “men and women, once married when

marriage. ( a man should get married on coming of age, and so should a

gilr.)” However to modern people, it doesn’t matter to get married or not

but if they could have a happy life.

我不懂，到底結婚有什麼好處？為什麼非結婚不可？

每個國家的文化各有不同，到外國人家裡作客，千萬不能送錯禮物，

免得犯了他們的禁忌。

Each country has its own culture. Never bring wrong things for presents

when visiting people from other countries, or you might violate the taboo

of their culture.

祭拜好兄弟的時候有很多禁忌，例如，一定要中午以後才能拜，拜的

時候也不要說出自己或是家人的姓名。

There are many taboos for worshiping the ghosts (Our Brothers). For

example, the rite of worshiping should only be processed during the hours

later than noon. The names of you and your family should never be

pronounced during the worshiping.

The culture of the Ghost Months is very meaningful. Pudu ritualsare held during

the Ghost Month. People treat the wandering spirits as their friends, share foodwith

them and give them blessings so all the living creatures could stop suffering and gain

happiness.

During the whole seventh lunar month, each householdtake turns to provide a

feast for the “Good Brothers.” This event takes place throughout the thirty days. At

Buddhist and Taoist temples, plenty of worshippers chant verses from scripture tohelp

the ghosts successfully make the journey to the world they belong to and start their

new lives.

Ever since the Qing Dynasty, the Water Lantern tradition is one of the most

important local folklore events during the seventh lunar month In Yilan. According to

historical records, on the first day of the seventh lunar month, a member from each

family carries a water lantern with their family names and the names of their shops on

it.Then they march in a clamor to the shorewith live cymbals and drum music in the

middle of the night.The lanterns are carried to the water, lit, and released.The glowing

lanterns are meant to give directions to lost souls and help ghosts find their way to the

food offerings.

媽總是到廟裡求一個平安符給我。

my mom always gets one for me at the temple before I take off for a trip or

activity that seems unsafe.
