first online “country”, www.ellines.com.ellines.com is an online community for Greeks all around the world. It is for Greeks who have achieved excellence anywhere on the planet, who have tran-scended borders and created “another” Greece. In April 2012, ellines.com held its first conference, which was a great success. The conference was called “Ellines: From Crisis to Excellence”. In the pages that follow, we invite you to meet Steve Vranakis, Sonia Theodoridou, Thomas Mylonas and Orianthi Panagari - if, of course, you don’t already know them!

One is a businessman with a very successful career in the Netherlands. One is an internationally

He grew up in Canada but left home at a young age to travel. When he began experimenting with the Internet, a great “love” sparkled. Since

then he has focussed mainly on the field of digital applications and interactivity. The man in question is Steve Vranakis, whose origins are in Crete. At present, he is at the helm of Google’s Creative Lab, as the Crea-tive Director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.Steve Vranakis’s family originates from Sfakia in Crete. They emigrated to Vancouver in the late ’60s. During the course of his career so far, Steve has formed his own company and worked with some of the world’s biggest companies, helping to establish some of the top names in the market, including O2, Amazon and the iPhone in Brit-ain. Formerly Creative Director of VCCP, Steve left the company in 2011 to work at Google’s Creative Lab. In April 2012 he was a guest speaker at the first conference organised by ellines.com. The title of his presentation was “Made in Greece. Innovation out of crisis”, a declaration of how important it is for Greeks around the world to reclaim their national identity.

Μεγάλωσε στον Καναδά, αλλά έφυγε από το σπίτι σε νεαρή ηλικία για να ταξιδέψει. Όταν άρχισε να πειραματίζεται με το διαδίκτυο, ξεκίνη-σε ένας μεγάλος «έρωτας». Από τότε εστιάζει κυρίως στον χώρο των ψηφιακών εφαρμογών και της διάδρασης.Ο λόγος για τον κρητικής καταγωγής Στιβ Βρανάκη, ο οποίος σήμερα είναι στο «τιμόνι» της Google Creative Lab, ως καλλιτεχνικός διευθυ-ντής για την Ευρώπη, τη Μέση Ανατολή και την Αφρική. Η οικογένεια του Στιβ Βρανάκη κατάγεται από τα Σφακιά και μετανά-στευσε στο Βανκούβερ στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του ’60. Στη διαδρομή του έως τώρα, o Στιβ δημιούργησε τη δική του εταιρεία, ενώ συνεργά-στηκε και με ορισμένες από τις μεγαλύτερες εταιρείες, συμβάλλοντας στην καθιέρωση εξαιρετικών νέων ονομάτων στην αγορά, μεταξύ των οποίων η O2, το Amazon και το iPhone στη Βρετανία.Δημιουργικός διευθυντής της VCCP, άφησε το 2011 την εταιρεία για να δουλέψει στην Google Creative Lab. Soprano Sonia Theodoridou was born in Veria. She studied singing at the Nation-al Conservatory of Athens with Kalliopi

Papalexopoulou, graduating with top class honours and a Distinction for her outstanding performance. She was awarded the “Maria Cal-las Award” and continued her studies on a scholarship at the Music Academy of Cologne and then in London with Vera Rosza. She has appeared at the most important lyric theatres in Europe, such as the Frankfurt Oper, the Berlin Staatsoper unten den Linden, the Deutsche Opera Berlin, the Staatsoper

Hamburg, the National Theater Munich, the Theatre Royal de la Monnaie-Brux-elles, the Theatre Chatelet de Paris, the Teatro Communale di Firenze, the Thea-tre Basel, the Opera de Lyon, the Opera de Montpellier, the Festspiele Schwetzin-gen, the Maifestspiele Wiesbaden and at the Odeon of Herod Atticus, among others.As she herself declares, people cannot support art because of the economic crisis so art must support the people by reducing ticket prices and artists’ fees so that people can attend events with dignity.Together with her husband, the conduc-tor Theodoros Orphanidis, she is con-stantly making new plans to promote music, bringing talented young people from all over the world to the Orchestra Mobile, which the two set up together as part of their effort to make a reality of their vision for art.

Η σοπράνο Σόνια Θεοδωρίδου γεννήθηκε στην Βέροια. Σπούδασε τραγούδι στο Εθνικό Ωδείο Αθηνών με την κα. Παπαλεξοπούλου, απ’ όπου απoφοίτησε με Άριστα παμψηφεί και Αριστείο εξαιρετι-κής επίδοσης. Της απενεμήθη το βραβείο των υποτροφιών «Μαρία Κάλλας» και ως υπότροφος, συνέχισε τις σπουδές της στην Ανωτάτη Μουσική Ακαδημία της Κολονίας και στη συνέχεια στο Λονδίνο με την Vera Rosza.Έχει εμφανιστεί στα σπουδαιότερα λυρικά θέατρα της Ευρώπης, όπως τα Frankfurt Oper, Berlin Staatsoper unten den Linden, Deutsche Opera Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, National Theater Munich, Theatre Royal de la Monnaie-Bruxelles, Theatre Chatelet de Paris, Teatro Communale di Firenze, Theatre Basel, Opera de Lyon, Opera de Montpellier, Festspiele Schwetzingen, Maifestspiele Wiesbaden, Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού κ.ά. Με τον μαέστρο σύζυγό της, Θεόδωρο Ορφανίδη, κάνουν διαρκώς νέα σχέδια για την προώθηση της μουσικής, φέροντας ταλαντούχους νέους από όλο τον κόσμο στην Orchestra Mobile που δημιούργησαν μαζί, επιχειρώντας να υλοποιήσουν το όραμά τους για την τέχνη.

Thomas Mylonas is one of the most influential businessmen and designers of his generation. Now 30 years of age, he has already influenced

and inspired others with a wide range of activities, set-ting up three major companies: the investment group Crux Group, the multidimensional design company Dot Kite and the commercial company Loggia Import.In 2007, BusinessWeek magazine chose him as one of the winners in the category Young European Entrepre-neurs, the annual award for the most promising young minds in business. Earlier that same year, as the lead-ing design magazine “Square-Mag” reported, Thomas Mylonas had been nominated as the most influential designer of 2007.

Τhough still very young (she was born in 1985) Orianthi Panagari has managed to become one of the best guitarists in the world. She was born and raised in Mel-bourne. Her father played in a Greek band and the house was filled with guitars and

other musical instruments. This is why she developed a keen interest in the guitar at an early age, when she was just 6 years old. By the time she was 11 she was already playing the electric guitar!Her first public appearance was as a support, performing before the Italian-American singer and guitarist Steve Vai took the stage. At the age of 14 she recorded her first album, “Under the Influence”, with her own covers of songs by musicians who had influenced her. She was lucky enough to meet and play with Carlos Santana when she was 18. He invited her to join him up on stage during the sound check and then asked her to accompany him throughout the whole concert.She was also the one chosen by Michael Jackson to play guitar for him on his “This Is It” tour, but the death of the King of Pop prevented her from making her dream come true…

Η Οριάνθη Παναγάρη έχει καταφέρει, παρά το νεαρό της ηλικίας της (είναι γεν-νημένη το 1985), να συγκαταλέγεται στις καλύτερες κιθαρίστριες στον κόσμο. Γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε στη Μελβούρνη. Ο πατέρας της έπαιζε σε ελληνικό συγκρό-τημα, ενώ είχε γεμίσει το σπίτι με κιθάρες και άλλα μουσικά όργανα. Έτσι, το ενδια-φέρον της Οριάνθης για τις κιθάρες ήρθε πολύ νωρίς, όταν ήταν μόλις στην ηλικία των 6 ετών, ενώ στα 11 της χρόνια έπαιζε κιόλας ηλεκτρική κιθάρα! Η πρώτη της δημόσια εμφάνιση ως «προ-πομπού» σε συναυλία ήταν για τον Ιταλοαμερικανό κιθαρίστα και τραγουδι-στή Steve Vai. Στην ηλικία των 14 ηχογρά-φησε και τον πρώτο της δίσκο, «Under the Influence», με δικές της εκτελέσεις κομμα-τιών από μουσικούς που την είχαν επηρεά-σει. Είχε την τύχη να συναντήσει και να παίξει με τον Carlos Santana στα 18 της. Αυτός την προσκάλεσε να ανέβει μαζί του στη σκηνή κατά το sound check και έπειτα της ζήτησε τον συνοδεύσει σε όλη τη συναυλία. Ήταν, επίσης, εκείνη που επέλεξε ο Michael Jackson για να παίξει κιθάρα στην περιοδεία This Is It, όμως ο θάνατος του βασιλιά της Ποπ δεν έκανε δυνατή την πραγματοποίηση του ονείρου...
