Teaching students proper technique (single strokes and rolls).

Giving students the opportunity to play the five different kinds of steel drums.

Instructing students how to play various hand-held percussion instruments.

Allowing students to have at least one performance experience using these instruments. The repertoire for these beginning students consists of various styles including calpyso (Trinidadian ), reggae (Jamaican), Latin , pop, jazz and classical. The aims for the students of the advanced steel drum class (steel Drum A) is 1) to further develop technique (build speed, clarity and endurance); 2) to choose one of the five types of steel drums as a specialization (being familiar enough with the pattern of notes to sight-read effectively ); 3) to have an opportunity for arranging or composing for the steel drum band; section of N.I.A. The repertoire also includes diverse styles as listed above, but the pieces are longer and more complicated.

An introduction to Jazz Music

Course Summary for an Introduction to Jazz Music

The purpose of this class is to introduce the students to the different styles of music collectively called jazz. Each kind will include an explanation of the historical background, description of the music style itself (instrument, forms, tempo, etc. ) and important players. Further clarification will be made by the aid of written scores and examples ( tapes, CDs, etc. ). Also, additional media including CD-ROM, LDs, or videos may be used from time to time to acquaint students with jazz performance techniques. Limited playing opportunities may also be provided with stress on understanding the style and less focus on improvising. The main intent is to expose students to as much music and as many jazz artists as possible.
