There are several conventional vacuum tubes and microwave tubes in common

use. The conventional vacuum tubes such as triodes, tetrodes and pentodes are still

used as signal source of low output power at low microwave frequencies. The most

important microwave tubes at present one two kavity klystron and reflex klystrons.

The advent of klystron amplifier began in 1939. The two cavity klystron is widely

used as microwave amplifier operated by principle of velocity and current

modulation. All electrons injected from cathode arrive at the first cavity with uniform

velocity and then pass through the second cavity. As a result of these actions the

electrons gradually bunched together as they travel down the drift space. In 1957, the

first solid state microwave devices was invented in 1957 and is called the tunnel

diodes. Tunnel diode is useful in microwave oscillators and amplifiers. It exhibits a

negative resistance characteristics in the region between peak current and valley

current.
